Luang Prabang: The Mellow Capital of Laos

Whilst Vientiane is the official capital of Laos, Luang Prabang can definitely take the title of capital of cool, calm beauty. Situated in the north of the country, Luang Prabang scatters around the surrounding countryside on both sides of the mighty Mekong River, snaking its way southwards towards Vientiane. Travellers arrive from all over the world to visit the generous amount of Buddhist temples in and around the city, and they don’t disappoint in their grandeur and sense of calm. Indeed, after the crowds of Bangkok and frenetic energy of Ho Chi Minh, walking the streets of Luang Prabang feels lime stepping into an oasis of calm. The walking pace slows, the eyes take in the compact houses and temples poking from above buildings and on top of tree-lined hills, and the temperature changes from red hot, to subtropical warm. Rather than scurrying back to the hotel to lie under the air conditioning, explorers can spend the day temple-hopping, climbing Mount Phou Si, or watching the Buddhist monks collecting alms. Some are lucky enough to witness monks chanting from the temples, and provided you are respectful, you can watch or listen from nearby. A personal highlight was catching a boat from one of the quiet side roads in the city centre and cruising along the river listening to ambient music and drinking an extremely satisfying cocktail. One of the highlights of an already impressive South East Asian experience. Outside of the city, an hour’s taxi ride (or longer bike ride) takes you to the Kuang Si Falls - an impressive waterfall, nature trail and swimming area. The crowds are huge, but the experience is relaxing. Just remember to move a lot in the water or small, hungry fish make a beeline for your feet! Luang Prabang: the perfect chance to experience the mellow side of South East Asia. Andrew Collier for Canal St Online.

Lockdown in Lisbon

Visiting Lisbon shortly before restrictions on travel started and the curfew was just beginning was a bittersweet experience. On the one hand, closures of galleries and museums meant that we were limited in the amount of culture we could indulge in, but as a result, we walked around the city for hours, sampling Portuguese dishes and quaffing vinho verde like there was a curfew about to happen, oh wait… Lisbon is a fantastic walking city: from the long stretch of waterfront stretching from the city to Belem (home of the famous pasteis de nata), to the alleyways of Alfama, the ancient moorish area now dotted with small restaurants and elderly ladies selling ginjinha for one Euro outside their houses. It’s no wonder that Alfama and the Bairro Alto are frequently voted as some of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world, the latter being home to large-scale street art on several buildings and a strong art scene. Less than an hour on the train, is the town of Sintra, spilling down the hill like a colourful toy town, location is everything here and a brisk hill walk will bring you to several opulent palaces worthy of the endurance. The big ticket here is Pena Palace, sitting elegantly at the top of the hill. Pena has been both a monastery and a regal summer residence for the Portuguese royal family, and is decorated to reflect both histories. A personal Sintra favourite is Quinta da Regaleira, located further down the hill in its own gothic gardens replete with their own well and cave system. Lisbon and the rest of the world maybe isolating and in lockdown, closing shutters in Graca and shutting up shop in Chiado, but still has the same magic that will bring people back once more. Andrew Collier for Canal St Online.
Our very own Gary Manners can help with planning and booking (when possible) once the crisis is behind us all.

Tasmania with Gary Manners

Talking Tassie Tasmania sits elegantly off the coast of Australia, but feels a million miles away from the skyscrapers of Melbourne and vast outback interiors of its humungous cousin. Turn a corner in one direction, and you could be in a leafy welsh valley, complete with stone cottages and postcard churches. Only a trip to visit one of the resident Tasmanian Devils, lets you know you’re not driving close to home. Hobart is the perfect base to explore the southern parts of Tasmania. The city is compact, friendly and easy to navigate, but with enough going on to satisfy most appetites. Known as a friendly city, this traveller started the night eating an amazing octopus dish downtown and ended up adopted by the locals after a trip to the local gay bar. A top tip is to head up the hill towards North Hobart - a number of local pubs offer live music and an authentic Hobart experience away from the tourist spots by the harbour. Away from Hobart, Bruny Island is a foodie paradise and a great day out from the city. Aside from beautiful scenery, Bruny Island has comparatively less tourists than the mainland and a plethora of food and drink destinations. In one day, you can sample amazing Bruny Island oysters, cheeses, fudge and local cider. A slightly longer drive from Hobart and you reach Port Arthur, an historic convict settlement and one of Tasmania’s most important historical sites. The area is packed with information on the history of the convicts that lived there and sits imposingly on the water. Of course, no trip to Tasmania would be complete without visiting MONA, an incredible art gallery situated a boat ride away from downtown Hobart. The collection gathered here is equally as breathtaking as the space. Lots of amazing sights packed into one island! Andrew Collier for Canal St Online
