So Martyn talked briefly about the ai npcs in stream yesterday. He said that from he has heard from other more knowledgable members, the ai used is more closed than what some people are assuming. However, he fully admits that he doesn't understand how that stuff works and might be getting his facts wrong, and that's why he has been avoiding the npcs (along with him not finding them that interesting to begin with)

what ai model i believe is used in misadventures smp npcs

DO NOT HARASS ANY MISADVENTURES SMP MEMBER. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS FACT, THIS IS SPECULATION.

tldr; i think its an api that uses an openai and a facebook ai model that has been trained off of unconsenting artists

i am open to being disproven, but i strongly believe the npcs are powered by inworld ai, which is made specifically to be lightweight and for video games and roleplay. its significantly easier, cheaper, and more customizable than using the models directly.

inworld hosts multiple models, and the character/roleplay bots use from facebook’s llamma 3.1 druid, GPT-4o, and GPT-4o mini, all of which are trained off of unconsenting artists work.

the series is lovely and there is so much love put into it, but the ai is disappointing, even if it has been in rats and pirates smp before, i was not watching mcyt for like a year at that time and still do not think it was okay

my personal rant about misadventures smp generative ai npcs (sorry i know there are so many already)

to clarify, i am somewhat of an extremist when it comes to generative ai. i do not think it is ethical whatsoever unless all parties trained off of consented. this includes for fun.

firstly, i do not think it was okay in pirates smp or rat smp either. they were also during about a year time where i did not really watch any mcyt. secondly, i really enjoy misadventures smp so far and i think the npcs do very little for the series, ignoring the ethicality, the npcs being removed entirely would not have effected much. 

the series has so much creativity and love put into it, and the map and mods are fantastic. to pair that with something that actively takes from creatives without their consent is mindboggling to me.
