Lesson nine of communication design

The last lesson is when we have our final presentation. Charis has given us a lot of room of freedom on how we present our newspaper so we decided to use the concept of a fake advertisement and tell people to subscribe us at the presentation XD. Everyone has come up with some very interesting way to present their ideas .I was really impressed by The Threek because of their acting skills  and the effort to write.draw whole story they made for the newspaper. Just really hope that we all could have spend more together at the studio.

Lesson eight of communication design

This whole lesson is about reading and critiquing the newspapers done by other group. I feel like this process is really important because it provides me perspectives out of my vision and helps me to understand the the pros and cons of my work I often neglect ,which eventually helps me to become better, make progress and grow and change.For example, when I was making this newspaper I try to recreate the old western newspaper so much that I didn’t realize I could actually also break the grid system as well to make the layout more unexpected and interesting. Also, it is just so so so so rewarding when you see others appreciate your work, which really makes me feeling motivated to keep going on.

Lesson seven of communication design

For lesson seven, we have learnt about what is context which is the circumstances that form the setting of something that allows our design/thing to be understood in greatest extent. I never realized the importance of context before this lecture but actually it really helps us to focus on our topic without digressing and present the purpose of our design more clearly. For example, you would probably not know that the dark brown liquid is coffee☕️  with the white cup as a container and a metal spoon 🥄.Later on during exercise period, we have designed a wooden/bamboo basket so our container will basically be a movable object where it involves a seller to actually sell or distribute the newspaper to others at different places.

Lesson six of communication design

For lesson six, we mainly focus research in depth, hypothesis into data stage and converting data into information. The reason for doing more personal research may help to sort out the data that we truly want. Thus, Charis has given us a class task of observing and recording your surroundings (more specifically is to write down or draw the things you observed outside the widow) I was quite confused and overwhelmed by the abundance of objects I could observe on at the beginning but after examining things further I find the variety of trees in different form and colors to be really interesting so I decided to pick it as my observation object. Here is my observation !!! I mainly classified the trees into tall and short bushes and make more in-depth comparison between them. I think this exercise really helps me to analyze data quickly and develop the system for observation more efficiently.

Lesson five of communication design

For lesson five, we are first introduced to the anatomy of a visual message which includes express it representationally, symbolically and abstractly. I feel like representation and symbolism are something that we are all pretty familiar with( by the way really hilarious how Charis uses the live-streaming of a duck as an example), so I would like to talk about abstract instead. You can say that it is similar to symbolism which you simplify the object and reduce it to the basic visual elements in a distilled way and sometimes there could be no connection with familiar visual data, environment or experiential at all too.

For the check-up section, me and Daisy have made a rough layout of our newspaper which we refernce a lot from the old western newspaper to give the newspaper a little bit if that historical and mythologic look.

Lesson four of communication design

For lesson four, its mainly a critique for our first assignment which is design a symbol of our chosen topic. Unfortunately, I was having surgery for tooth extraction at that morning so I am absent for almost half of the class but I did go back to read the slides and miro board where everyone ‘s assignment is place and I have to say I am really impressed by Vanessa’s work which included a fist and the letter of R, brilliant use of both positive and negative space and everything seem very coherent.

Lesson three of communication design

For the class of this week, we have moved to zoom sadly because of the worsening pandemic. I really hope that I can get back to studio and have class with my classmates soon QAQ. Anyway, for class 3 we are introduced to the assignment of making a newspaper for our chosen topic and I am really excited for it because I always wanted to do some layout design for newspaper. This assignment is more about a research oriented project so in the in class activity, Charis asked us to define and write down 5 things I associate with research and I write observation, data, analysis, investigation and interview. Later on, I leaned that research can be classified into 3 categories, namely primary research which you to investigate and collect data by yourself, secondary research which you read and extract information from the work of others and tertiary research which you read the writing from the secondary research of others.

Lesson two of communication design

For the second lesson, we are asked to design and draft some symbols or logos for our chosen topic which is myths. We are quite uncertain about what idea or message we will try to tell unlike other groups like planet saviors who have a clear goal on trying to spread the message of environment protection, so we just drew some logo and symbols that are related to mythlogoy like the Greek temple, hammer of Thor, thunder and clouds... We critiqued the group of Critter's Cares, whom topic is animal rights and we think they really did an excellent job for presenting their ideas in a thoughtful way but I just wish to see they also speak for the animals like cows, pigs instead of just mostly household animal like dogs and cats.

Lesson one of communication design

I was really hyped for the first lesson of communication design because it is the first time I get to back to the studio and meet others face to face after a long time of semester break. The lesson is really fun too! I can see how Charis (our tutor) really focuses a lot on the interactivity of the lesson and I really enjoyed it! For in class exercise, Charis asked us about the definition of design, I responded her that design is a tool for solving problems in a visually appealing and practical way but apparently, there is more than that. As said by David Reinfurt, as a discipline , design is unmoored, free, I have heard it usefully, if circularly, descried as “the discipline without the discipline of another discipline and I agree with him also. Design is free, boundless and can be applied to many different disciples and field, it is really something that appear on our everyday life and really makes me realize the importance of design.
