Something other’s do that gets on their nerves

When answering this question, it’s good to look at Shun’s status as karma demon. Meaning that we have to take into account the things that didn’t show on the surface, because Shun is a very guarded character  —  && very smart, seeing his future before it happened, accepting it, && taking precautionary measures. The karma demon children are always geniuses, that’s no secret. The first child mentioned  ( the one with no name, from the story )  who turned into a karma demon was mentioned to “sneer at the foolishness of adults && laugh at the laws of the world”. Izumi was given the five pills that were to “cure” her condition but she knew right away that they were fake && took them all. Shun grabbed the attention of Shisei because he was so intelligent && proficient at using his Cantus. Not to mention that Shun was the one who asked the most of the library on the summer camp.

So, all that being said, one of Shun’s pet peeves is people not seeing what he deems as the obvious. Shun is aware he’s a genius but at the same time it can get frustrating for him when people don’t see what he sees && he has to walk them through it. We do see this in canon though he’s not frustrated at Saki, just worried. After all, he was in love with her, && he’s become very peaceful over the years  ( not to mention his already-established trait of covering up his stronger emotions by detaching himself && looking at things analytically, or focusing on other things )  so his speaking to her was gentle && guiding.

But one can imagine that while he’s talking to her, he’s trying to get her to see what he sees. “That’s not a fiend, Saki.” He says it multiple times. He told her that if Maria was to live, that many would be in danger. He comes to her in the submarine && tells her about himself not because he wants to be remembered  ( though he surely does )  but because he wants her to have all the pieces of the puzzle, because he knows that she’s smart enough && capable enough to handle being the Head of the Ethics Committee after Tomiko. He wants her to have all these pieces && he’s the only one with some of the pieces. He even comes to her right after he ‘dies’ && shows her the mirror. He knows Saki is going to think the grave he shows her is hers before she even voices her concern. && when Saki comes to see him at the lake, at the gateway to his dimension, he’s upset that she’s put herself in danger, that she can’t see what he can see, plain && simple, that she cares about him enough to disregard the danger she’s in. Of course, when she mentions that she wants to know what’s happened to him, he realizes that she probably doesn’t get it, && that’s why he starts talking about the story of the karma demon, bringing what’s happened to him back down to a level she can understand.

All this being said, Shun is fine with helping his friends out, but at the same time if it was anyone else, I feel that he would be frustrated trying to get them to see what he sees. Or at least have less patience with them, especially if the information isn’t crucial to their wellbeing, but just something he thinks they should be able to recognize && understand. In the same vein, I think that if someone tried to assert themselves as being smarter than he is, he’d be affected negatively, too. After all, the moral of the karma demon story is not to be ‘arrogant’ … but I think this has a different meaning than we’re used to. Because of the nature of the world in 3011 A.D., ‘arrogance’ can be seen as simply ‘looking for answers’. Their society hinges on brainwashing children. So ‘arrogance’ can be, at its core, trying to figure out more than the brainwashing they’re given. After all, karma demons are almost always kind, reasonable, good children. The problem comes in when they start looking for answers their society purposefully keeps from them.

So Shun’s annoyance in this regard would be targeted mostly to adults who think that they know everything && that they’re always in the right doing what they’re doing. Not a simple matter of “this person is saying they know more academically than I do and I don’t like it” but rather “I see the world for what it truly is and I’m being told to forget about it and go to my own slaughter”.

In the end, I think that’s probably the thing that most upsets Shun;  people trying to downplay his intelligence && foresight. He knows he’s smart. He knows he sees what other people don’t. && two of the outcomes of that are what he dislikes. The first being that he needs to slow down for other people who aren’t his friends  ( because he always places Satoru, Maria, Mamoru, && Saki at a higher level of patience than others )  && the second being the adults attempting to keep society like cattle by saying they know best / they know more than the children.  ( Though, this time around  —  after going through the first karma demon boy, Izumi, && Haruka in the manga  —  the adults seem to at least acknowledge Shun’s intelligence, though they do still downplay the scope of his power && foresight, which is … honestly godlike at times. )

sorry, anon, i’m gonna have to pass on this one. while my portrayal of shun fluctuates from fourteen to around nineteen, since he’s only shown in canon at age fourteen, i’m not really comfortable expanding on this sort of thing. i know satoru && shun make out in canon but that’s about as far as i’m comfortable with. trying to come up with these kinds of headcanons for someone we’ve only seen at a maximum of fourteen years old. after the second timeskip, he’s twenty-six, yes, but he hasn’t had the chance to grow up alongside his friends && he’s a concept at this point, not a physical, corporeal being  ( though one can say certainly not only in saki’s mind, from him saying “I showed myself to you up on the surface” while confronting Messiah;  it’s obvious he himself had some hand in appearing before her, so I don’t believe he’s just in Saki’s imagination )  so i’d rather steer clear of sexual asks about shun.
