James Frances Thorpe was an athlete and Olympic gold medallist. He was also a member or the Sac and Fox Nation and became the very first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States. Thorpe didn’t have an easy life, either. He faced racial prejudice on a day to day basis and became an orphan following the death of his mother and father. In fact, just before he was set to compete in the Olympics, his luck took a turn for the worse when somebody stole his shoes. Taking it in his stride, Thorpe just went and found two discarded shoes in the trash can. They were two different makes and two different sizes so he wore extra socks in one pair. Despite the odd combination, Thorpe went on to win two gold medals.
