Your Dog and Coronavirus
** IMPORTANT UPDATE ** 3/13/2020** Top 5 things to keep in mind regarding dogs and the coronavirus outbreak:
1.  If your puppy is 8 - 14 weeks old, do NOT keep them at home to avoid exposure!  It is critical that your puppy gets out to see things in the world like trucks and people in a variety of coats, etc. rather than keeping them at home.  Currently, public health are NOT recommending cancelling gatherings of less than 250 people (stay tuned here for updates) and so we are NOT recommending that dog trainers cancel classes.
2. Only one dog in Asia has tested weakly positive for coronavirus among all those tested, and it is still not clear whether that was because someone else in the house who had the virus had coughed on their fur or the dog sniffed something belonging to them.  So dogs contracting coronavirus or giving it to people is not a significant concern at the moment.  Therefore, we do not believe it is necessary to cancel group dog walks at this time, although we encourage dog walkers to use good sanitation practices, stay home if they themselves show any signs of illness and wash their hands regularly.
3. Make sure the dog training facility you are going to take classes at is using good cleaning practices and offers you the opportunity to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after touching equipment/their door/etc..  Ask them to describe their sanitation protocol (which should include offering hand washing facilities and preferably hand sanitizer when you enter the hall, using bleach or another disinfecting chemical that kills viruses to keep the facility clean for pups and people, and regularly wiping down surfaces touched by people with that same disinfectant).
4. If you do get the virus and are self-isolating at home, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick.  If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with pets and wear a face mask.
5.  Make sure you have at least 3 weeks of your dog's food and medications at home in case you are required to stay home...you might want some extra dog toys too!  If you are travelling, take the food and medications AND your regular dog emergency/first aid kit with you (in case you are stuck away from home).
