People will do anything to not accept that good people can have bad traits. Aang had plenty of time, he just spent it all on Jameso- I mean Tenzin.

Also, I know people don't like that Aang wasn't the best Dad to his kids supposedly, but I actually think that's a domino effect of so many things. Aang is the Avatar, they're building Republic City, restoring peace to their world, among other things and he's often very busy. Sadly, as the Avatar, his duties take away much of the time he could spend with his kids.

And then there's the fact he's the last surviving member of an entire nation of people. This is the effect of a genocide as he alone does his best to keep the teachings and culture of his people alive. Along with his Avatar duties.

His kids have the right to say they wished Aang could've been around more, but I also think they understood that their father carried so much on his shoulders at all times. In reality, I think it's meant to show the long-lasting effects of the Fire Nations horrific genocide of the Air Nomads and the weight of responsibility the Avatars have to carry.

I don't really care for Kataang, but I won't stand this Aang slander. Let's just clear up that Aang's responsibility is 100× greater than that of Zuko. There's an entire family tree of royals waiting to ascend to the throne, and honestly you can pick literally anyone to be the fire lord, but there is only one Avatar. Aang HAD abandoned post before, and he saw the consequences. He was gone for 100 years of war. You want him to do that AGAIN? For some girl he's known for 6 months?? Now how about I tell you he did! Flashbacks to the Guru, Aang leaves mid session to attaining GODHOOD just so he could save Katara. Him doing that single handedly doomed the earth kingdom. He leaves all his responsibilities behind to get to Katara(who he finds holding Zuko's face lmao), but then the Dai Li have them surrounded and Zuko backstabs them(this also includes backstabbing Katara btw). Only when he sees Katara is about take on like 20 fully grown men is he like "okay, time to pull up my pants". And then he gets shot with lightning.

And making one thing clear, Zuko would've held that lightning no matter who was there. Zhao could've been standing in place of Katara and Zuko still would save his life. Not because he loves Zhao, but because that's his character moment. He sacrificed the entire left side of his face to save a couple of fire nation soldiers he had never met. Zuko was *always* the saving guy. There was nothing Romantic about saving Katara.

Ok so I was as always daydreaming about my current fave ship while I was checking out some youtube commentaries and I sorta happen to see this comment…

If Bryke only saw this earlier and made Aang the sacrificial lamb for Zutara instead of ‘he’s the hero and he needs to get the girl’ lame a$$ excuse, it would have been a more glorious, more epic ending. Aangs role as avatar would have had a deeper, more meaningful purpose to sacrifice being with Katara and we wouldn’t be having this fanon/canon war. Most of Kataang fandom would have understood the sacrifice and we should have had our ship.

Don't spoil the LN you fuck heads. As a person who's never read the light novels, I'm so captivated by the full story that the author is trying to tell, or what few glimpses of it we get from the anime/youtube cut content creators(thank you Aninews+Echidnut). I think Re:zero is one of the best isekai stories to date. It's world is really fleshed out and the anime is so fuckin hype. Season 3 has been 4 years in the making and is going phenomenally so far. I can't believe we're finally seeing Regulus in the series(forget sanctuary for a second). I honestly thought he was a late game villain but we're already seeing his interactions with the main cast. I love every letter of the bullshit that comes out of his mouth. His delusions honestly sound like something I would say in an online disagreement. I'm so excited to see what exactly his power set is. He's so OP, I'm not entirely sure how the cast will deal with him? I guess it makes sense with Reinhard around- wait did someone saw REINHARD 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥

I feel like you guys are way too nice to people who have their own head up their arse wtf do you mean anon😭

I think twitter is a hellhole, but I think we have to think deeper about this. At what point do we acknowledge Bryke didn't do the best storytelling job? Yes there are jerks and assholes our here, but if you do a good job, your main character is not the least popular in the group and the flagship romance is not the most reviled in favor of a Fanon thing between a colonizer and a victim.

I'm an artist and I want to go to school for animation. I'd love to make a series like Avatar. But I feel like fandom papers over the mistakes of the creators because there are a few people out here being loud and stupid about the characters. I think there should be a discussion of where Bryke went wrong that resulted in Aang being an unpopular character and Kataang being an unpopular ship. I think here are a few possibilities:

Making Aang younger than Katara

Making Aang's ethnicity and circumstances unpalatable to the target audience

Making Zuko the main antihero instead of Azula

Making Aang sort of silly during serious times

I know this all may seem trivial, but I do think it was a mistake to make Aang younger than his eventual love interest. Aang should have at least been pubescent.

Most people know nothing about Tibetan culture except for the caricature of it that ends up in western media and vague stuff about the Dalai Lama. The arrows were cool, but Aang probably should have been based on a more "accessible" ethnicity.

Zuko sucked the air out the room with his arc. You can't do that unless you're going to put him with the main character. Zukaang would have been interesting but they weren't going there. Azula as the main antihero, however, would have been interesting. She's a better fire bender than Zuko and even though was as sheltered as him was less naive. She could have been a version of that girl June who was in a couple of episodes.

It's jarring to have the main character who is supposed to be the person saving the world be weirdly silly at serious times. You don't see that in Harry Potter or Twilight. Aang's behavior in episodes like The Great Divide and The Warriors of Kyoshi didn't do him many favors, and serious episodes like The Avatar State and Crossroads of Destiny came too late. Also, having him have a personality trait where he runs away from his problems is not a good trait for a hero. I know Zuko does it too but he's not the hero of the story.

You don't have to respond to much or any of this. I just think that it's sort of easy to dismiss people who hate Aang or hate Kataang as "dumb people on Twitter" rather than dive into where the source material sort of set up the situation of having Aang being unpopular and the most popular ship being between the two characters that saw the most outward growth. I've read your metas and I understand about Aang's flat arc, but Western audiences really aren't going to respond to that. If Bryke were not Western themselves then I'd shrug and say it was just a failure, but they should have known better. Avatar is going to be a cautionary tale for every person wanting to do a fantasy series and a blueprint of what not to do if you want your main character and the romance involving the main character to be the most popular.
