part of what makes the terror so devastating, so GOOD, is that the characters are all so human, and so many of them embody the best of that – crozier stepping the fuck up and staging an intervention for himself and doing everything he can to get his men back safe, the beautiful bond he forms with fitzjames (’are we brothers, francis? i would like that very much’), fitzjames needing so badly to prove himself (and then he DOES), blanky’s true courage laughing in the face of death (and he’ll make that bastard choke on every bite), jopson’s steadfast devotion caring for his captain, the love and aching tenderness between bridgens and peglar, literally everything goodsir does, the way they care so much and try so hard, its just so much and it makes the darkness and tragedy hit like a goddamn freight. its like goodsir says at the end, even after everything they’ve been through, that there’s beauty in this place. he was talking about the natural world that had hounded them for so long, but there was beauty in these men too, and the way the worst disaster sharpened their good qualities into true heroism.
