          she’s well aware that the circumstnaces they’re discussing are anything but light — but that does nothing to stop the small bubble of laughter that bursts from her .  because seriously ?  her ?  meet peggy carter ?  it’s impossible . it’s on her bucket list .  it’s on her vision board .  so the fact that he asks it so simply ,  easily ,  like it’s something everyone at s.h.i.e.l.d. has done ?  she can’t resist the small bit of disbelief .  but then again ,  he might not exactly know how big s.h.i.e.l.d. has become .   ❝  have i met the peggy carter ?  founder of s.h.i.e.l.d.  badass feminist icon ?  —- no .  i’m pretty sure i’d die ,  honestly .  she’s like …  ❞     she trails off ,  failing to find the right words .     ❝  sorry ,  no .  i haven’t .  she’s ….   she’s a pretty big deal .  but i’ve met fury ,  and maria ,  and i think they have an in if you wanted to visit her .  ❞    her teeth dig into her lower lip ,  trying to refrain from fangirling any more than she already has on the subject of one of her ultimate heroes .   ❝  i did like an entire history paper on her in college though ,  so… i know stuff ,  if that’s why you wanted to know .  ❞

                eyes slightly widen as she laughs,  wondering if something happened,  if he’s said the wrong thing.  but only a terrible question passed his lips,  and he doesn’t think her cruel to laugh at his pain.  and thus he waits,  all scenarios he can think of running through his mind,  maybe she did meet peggy and remembers a funny moment.  but it’s admiration that shines through her words,  it’s admiration that pours from her lips,  it’s disbelief that made her laugh like this.   &&    there’s pride in the depth of his eyes,  pride for he knew what she could do,  pride for he’s always believed peggy would have the most amazing life.  he’s only heartbroken he wasn’t at her side through it all.      ❛  she’s amazing,  ❜      he quickly agrees,  fond smile upon his lips at the thought of her.  but it quickly drops,  embarrassment making eyes look away,  unable to voice his shame while looking at admirative eyes.      ❛  i’m scared to go.  ❜      it’s quiet,  it falls from his lips even if it breaks his heart,  the hardest breaks can happen in silence too.  appreciative tilt of his lips,  he simply shrugs,      ❛  i don’t think it would be fair to ask about her. not when i could ask myself, you know ?  ❜      he’s being a coward but he’s never been unfair.

            𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘’𝐋𝐋  𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊  𝐈𝐓  𝐎𝐔𝐓 .  if  only  it  would  be  that  easy  ,  as  if  the  rest  of  the  world  that  had  been  shoved  into  his  gut  wasn’t  itching  to  break  free  from  the  confines  of  his  ribs  —–  a  dangerous  sentiment  ,  something  palpable  ,  maybe  ,  but  bucky  isn’t  sure  what  it  will  take  to  make  it  work  out  in  the  first  place  .  it’s  mainly  to  prevent  more  disappointment  from  steve  that  he  concedes  in  the  first  place  ,  careful  consideration  done  to  his  words  .  ❛        if  you  think  it’ll    be  that  simple   ❜      to  say  we’ll  work  it  out  makes  the  job  sound  like  it’s  being  done  on  the  fly  ,  no  plan  ,  just  rushing  into  action  ,  rushing  into  healing  .  they  all  have  their  scars  to  bare  .      ❛        i  just  think  that  it’s  gonna  take  a  lot  more  than  just  some  confident  words  ,  is  all   ❜

            sigh passes his lips,  already guessing what it is that his friend is doing by agreeing so readily.  but steve has never been one to think that things were easy,  he’s always had to fight to get what he’s wanted,  he knows how hard life is    &&    he’s a bit disappointed that bucky would think him that naive.      ❛  you know i’m not saying this is simple. i’m just saying that it doesn’t have to be impossible, i’m saying that it will be hard but we can make it work.  ❜      determination is etched into every line of his face,  he’s fought too hard,  lost too much to let bucky choose the easy way out.  for it would be easy for his friend to surrender to his demons,  to decide it’s not feasible and just let go,  steve is not letting that happen,  not in a million years.

                         IT’S ALMOST FUNNY ,      that   he   thinks   she   expects   anything  ,      though   she   supposes   that   most   people   must   do  .     she   can’t   quite   say   that   things   like   this   are   the   only   parts   of   her   job   she   likes   doing  ,     the   only   thing   that   seems   like   it   could   have   meaning  .     even   if   she’s   nothing   more   than   a   pretty   face   to   plan   a   party  .               ❝  and who says i’m waiting for you to get better ?     that’s   quite   the   high   opinion   of   yourself  . ❞

               breath is swallowed,  gaze immediately down as she speaks,  head nodding absentmindedly,  she’s right,  of course she’s right.      ❛  yeah, it’s stupid of course,  ❜      it’s a mumble as embarrassment colors his cheeks red,  he wishes he were somewhere else,  anywhere else but there.      ❛  just wanted to warn you, t’s all.  ❜      and he hesitates on his feet,  not wanting to be rude but truly wanting to leave her vicinity,  why did he think he could talk to her ?

                 her hands run absentmindedly over the marks that the straight jacket has left on her wrists. neck bruised from the shock collar, she bears the physical remnants of the aftermath of their mission, but she can’t blame steve for all of it. she feels resentful, yes, because he left them to their own devices, but she knew the risk when she chose to follow clint to germany.  trust is something wanda doesn’t build easily and as a matter of fact, almost everyone on the team has lost hers for the time being. tony, natasha, vision - they were supposed to be on her side. that idea needs reconsideration now. “he is your best friend. he’ll always come first.” her voice sounds hollow as she avoids to look at steve, but she gets it. bucky barnes is the only thing he has left of a life that was lost to him for so long. she would have done the same for her brother. 

              his situation is not easy,  steve is not a person who compromises,  not with his beliefs at least.  but a decision had to be made,  to get bucky out or to help the others.  his heart,  logic won,  he has to admit,  he had to leave them behind to save bucky,  to put an end to zemo’s plan    &&    to be able to come back to save them.  and he did,  he did come back,  he did get them out but they suffered,  wanda more than the others.  that’s not something that he will ever be able to fix but they were fighting a war    &&    sacrifices must be made.      ❛  i’m still sorry. i thought we could all get out but i was wrong. i’m sorry for what you went through.  ❜      wanda is still a kid,  she has the heart in the right place,  she has the strength of an army    &&    she knows right from wrong.      ❛  how are you now ?  ❜      trauma is hard to fight,  to overcome,  steve knows he’s still suffering from his.  but maybe he can help her somehow.

                      BLUE EYES BECOME A MIX OF CONFUSION AND HUMOUR  ,    though   lips   quirk   into   some   ever   present   smile  ,     the   one   that   always   seems   to   know   better  ,     like   she   holds   access   to   some   secret   no   other   could   ever   see  .     who   ever   could   know   her   reasoning  ,     when   it   is   trapped   so   delicately   behind   everything   she   creates  ?                ❝  and   why   would   that   be   a   waste   of   my   time  ?  ❞

              there’s a sigh,  he can’t help it,  he’s seen so many people with their too bright smile coming to the va,  certain that it was going to change anything.      ❛  i’m never going to get better,  ❜      it’s simple enough,  straight to the point,  the simple truth without any decorum.  his brain is messed up,  his whole body hurts    &&    his nights are filled with nightmares.

She doesn’t really know him.   No,  don’t get her wrong,  she did her research.   She knows of him  (who doesn’t?).   Whatever information can be put onto pages,  whatever information SHIELD has in their databases that they deemed to be important enough to transcribe.   Is that,  however,  enough to know a man?   Dry facts and dates,  how he lived and how he died.   She might know a lot and yet she knows nothing at all.   And this impotence doesn’t really suit her,  not when she’s supposed to work with him.   He,  however,  is painting quite a picture himself,  one that can never be found in those pages she studied.   Ancient sort of heartache it must be;  one she’s not sure she will ever be able to grasp.   To understand.   And right now?   She’s not really planning on it.    “You were a soldier,  Rogers.   Tell me,  does a man with no reason to live makes for a good partner in war?”    She’s not the enemy,  doesn’t want to be seen as one by those she’s supposed to be fighting side by side with.   But at the same time she’s no friend of theirs either.   Didn’t learn to craft those kind of bonds yet save for one man to whom she owes all of this.   Be it a blessing or a curse,  Natasha’s yet to find out.    “You might not need me,  but if we’re in this together,  i need you.”    A hard thing to say out loud,  but is this not how teamwork works?   One must be able to trust the other,  but their paths are now lined by something that’s the furthest thing from that. 

                 he’s been stupid enough to not read her whole file,  stupid enough to only ask for what mattered.  for he knows just looking into green eyes that she’s read his,  her gaze makes cold gnaw at his spine,  it feels like she already knows him,  at least she thinks she knows him.  for he knows what’s in his file,  it’s not the truth,  the file says the army trusted him,  the file says that they were excited to have him,  the file says bucky was the only one to die.  but the terrible truth is that he did die too,  that he sacrificed himself for the world,  that he made the decision to die.  there are consequences when you take your chance to die,  especially when you fail to do so.  glance is given,  head slightly shaking before a huff passes his lips,      ❛  i am not yearning for death if that is your question. i would also never put your life in danger. i think that makes me a good partner in war. but we are not at war, are we agent romanoff ?  ❜      there is a war they say,  a war he’s not sure he was built for because he doesn’t know how to fight a war where the enemy is invisible,  when it’s all through codes    &&    numbers.  is it a war if no blood is shed ?  steve is afraid to be too old to have any kind of answer for this question,  he’s scared to say he doesn’t understand this world.  as she speaks,  he hears weakness riddling her words,  he hears truth    &&    he finds himself being ashamed of the harshness of his tone,  it’s not her fault,  whatever happened to him,  it’s not her fault.      ❛  i’m sorry. you’re right, you need to trust me. you’ll see that you can, i hope i’ll come to trust you too.  ❜      &&    the smile he offers her is far from being the usual sunny one but it’s a start.

trust    is    not    something    she    can    just    give    away.    karen’s    learned    that    the    hard    way    living    here.    people    would    take    that    trust    and    crush    it    between    their    fingers.    use    it    to    their    advantage    to    ruin    her    or    even    kill    her.    she’s    had    it    done    before.    many    people    have    tried    to    kill    her    before    and    yet,    she’s    the    one    left    standing.    because    she’s    smart,    she’s    careful.    and    karen’s    making    sure    not    to    lose    that    when    it    comes    to    steve.    azure    hues    dart    over    him    momentarily,    inhaling    a    small    breath.    he    seems    like    he’s    being    honest,    truthfully    for    the    most    part.    so,    she    places    her    purse    down    on    the    table,    turning    her    full    focus    to    him.        with ��  a    faint    nod,    she    makes    her    way    to    a    desk    that    her    computer    is    placed    on.    taking    one    of    the    keys    on    her    chain,    she    unlocks    it    and    holds    a    folder    in    her    hand.    “    and    you’re    sure    you    haven’t    been    followed?    because    i’m    really    tired    and    i    don’t    feel    like    dealing    with    someone    trying    to    kill    me.    ”

                he observes her,  careful to commit her to his memory,  to commit every little movement she does for steve has learnt that the devil is in the details    --    he doesn’t wish to be fooled again,  he’s too smart,  too skilled to be fooled.  but he knows the truth,  he knows that he lied to himself,  that he’s turned a blind eye to details that bothered him just because it was shield,  just because it was peggy,    &&    maybe because he was tired to fight alone.  but it was over now,  they were too much of a threat,  they were trying to take over the world,  they were a threat to freedom    &&    steve couldn’t turn a blind eye anymore.  sad laugh passes his lips,  head slightly tilting,      ❛  i know i’m not the poster boy for spying and such but i do how to not be followed.  ❜      it amuses him,  the way she acts with him,  it really is refreshing.  cerulean hues eye the folder she keeps close to her,  wondering if it is enough,  knowing that he will have to do with what she has for now.  thoughts drift to natasha,  he could truly use her help but he’s so unsure,  so scared to make a mistake.  again.

                      “ you had other priorities, i guess.”

            it breaks his heart,  guilt tight in his throat,  he could choke on it.  wanda is a kid    &&    she trusted him,  trusted him to have her back,  trusted him to protect her,  trusted him enough to face the government with him.  oh,  he’s not that naive,  he knows she had her own reasons but still,  she trusted him    &&    he let her down.  steve seems to be doing that a lot lately.      ❛  i shouldn’t have had other priorities. you needed me and i was too late.  ❜      jaw clenches,  muscles rolling under his flesh even if his eyes stay upon her face,  he’s no coward.
