Can’t wait for, like, 2025 when we look back on the 2018/2019 era and say “hey, remember when we were all really freaking depressed? That was a crazy time! Glad we aren’t like that anymore”

I feel like the only good ending to the mission impossible series is Ethan dying. Fight me on this but it’s the only way the movies can actually come to an end

julia calls ethan “baby” and the nurses at the hospital where she works call him “honey” and he knows all their names and her sister hugs him and her brother says he can’t wait for them to be brothers and they get married with little plastic gumball animal rings and everyone at the imf cheers when they make it to their honeymoon and they can’t actually have any of this and in fallout he’s curled up by a space heater having nightmares of their wedding

another aspect of tom cruise’s performance of Ethan that I really enjoy is that he is like really touchy-feely with people. like Ethan is an extremely physical character and that’s almost always in the context of action sequences, but in highly emotional character moments that gets translated into him reaching out to people (see: Ilsa’s arm in the park in Paris in Fallout, touching Benji’s shoulder in the cafe in Rogue Nation, how much he touches Julia after rescuing her in Shanghai in MI3, him touching Luther’s chest after shooting him at the beginning of Fallout, basically every scene with him and Claire in MI1, him searching Ilsa in Rogue Nation, etc etc).
And I don’t think Ethan is generally very good at hiding his emotions. Like he’s so clearly and obviously lying to Alanna when she asks him to bring her Ilsa in Fallout. I wouldn’t call Ethan emotionally repressed per se because while he definitely spends a lot of time trying to push his feelings aside I don’t think he actually successfully represses a lot of things lol. And I think the way that just-under-the-surface emotionality often gets expressed on screen is through physical touch. He’s like bursting at the seams whenever someone he cares about is in danger. guy who definitely sticks to his lovers like cling-on wrap
