Introducing Vlad
The first one, whom we would like to introduce, is someone who you may already know. The reason why we have chosen him is that we really like his work with RealityCapture (RC) and it is great that he is always willing to share his wisdom when it comes to use of RC and provides us with great tips and tricks.
Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Mr Vladlen Erium or, as we all know him, Vlad.
Vladlen is a graphic designer with more than 20 years of experience including DTP, advertising, corporate identity, fonts, packaging, web, application and 3D design. An adobe certified expert. Last 5 years working as a UI/UX designer. He is originally from Russia but past 4 years has been living and working in Japan.
And, as we wanted to know more about his work, we have decided to conduct a short interview.
When did you start with photogrammetry and 3D modelling?
First 3D modeling on an old Amiga 1200/Amiga 4000 around the middle of 90s. First photogrammetry experiments probably about 10 years ago.
Is it for your work or just a hobby? Or both?
I can use 3D graphic in my professional work, but 3D and photogrammetry is mostly a hobby. But I have plans to turn this into professional work.
Also, I do consulting and help new users understand how photogrammetry and RealityCapture work inside and what is required for the best results even with just a smartphone camera.
When did you start using RealityCapture?
I found RealityCapture in the middle of 2016 during my experiments with different photogrammetry tools. And fell in love with it after the first results.
At the moment, RealityCapture is far from all competitors with amazing mesh quality and huge amount of reconstructed real details. Incredible speed and low RAM requirements. All major 3D studios are switching from other photogrammetry tools to RealityCapture because of this.
Which model was the most difficult? What is the next project you are working on?
I have several scans in process at the moment.
One project are two small Shinto temples (one about 3.5m tall, second - 1.5m tall). Then also two 4-metre tall stone lanterns from a Buddhists temple and some other challenging scans. And as always, new scan is always more difficult than an old one. And not only because I want more and more details, better and better quality than I had achieved before. But also because I have already reached the limitations of my iPhone 6S Plus camera. Increasing quality is still possible but requires many experiments with image pre-processing (from RAW/DNG images) in Photoshop/CameraRAW and advanced settings in RealityCapture.
All the models that he has created were done using the iPhone 6S Plus camera with a custom photo app for shooting in RAW/DNG. The models that are shown are created from 1,000 to 4,000 images per object.
Here are Vlad’s three favorite models:
