I really appreciate that 💕💕 As it stands currently, the majority of my attention has been spent on Sarah Lives AU but I’ve always got a few concepts running in the background of my brain. I have a pretty large portion of a Summer Camp AU typed out that I might one day get around to editing and publishing. I’ve also been tossing around a “Joel and Ellie keep going west after the Fireflies try to cut out her brain AU” and a couple of “missing moments” (or maybe just some straight up fix-it’s) when it comes to season 2. You know as well as I do what’s to come next pretty much 😂 Thanks for asking!

I have a couple modern aus, but I’m assuming this is in regards to Next Door Neighbors verse? If so, then the answer is yes!! Hopefully another add on to that universe will be coming to a computer screen near you soon.

If in fact this question is in regards to Wounded Minds or some other modern au then unfortunately no, not right now. But I never say never!

Sorry, stupid question, it’s probably obvious, but does Ellie know the truth about “the lie” in your fic ”It's a long way back”? I feel like she does, but at the same time I feel like she doesn’t, and now I’m just wracking my brain trying to remember whether there’s a hint I’ve missed or if it’s meant to be ambiguous.

Not a stupid question at all!! It’s been mentioned a few times throughout but never discussed at length i don’t think. So very fair that it got lost in the sauce of the 100k+ words that this fic somehow is.

To answer your question, yes! Ellie does know about the lie and what the actual truth is in this instance. I have not written a scene surrounding the how or why of her finding out though. This will play a bit more of a factor in some of the chapters to come, but in all honesty I feel like I’ve already written the fall out from “the lie” so much that although I know it is relevant, I didn’t want it to carry a huge amount of the conflict or motivation when it came to this fic. Especially since they’ve got enough other things going on to accomplish those things!

The second-choice theme in this story is really hitting hard. It’s painful being inside Ellie’s mind—seeing how little she thinks of herself, how she’s always fighting for her place. What I can’t get over is Joel leaving when she was about to die. That line about how if Sarah hadn’t been there, he would’ve never left Ellie’s side really gutted me. I understand why he went after Sarah, but I’m still so mad. Ellie was dying, probably calling out for him, and he still chose Sarah. So when Ellie feels like a second choice, it doesn’t feel irrational—it feels real. As a reader, I felt it too.

And just to be clear—this isn’t a criticism of your story at all. I love it so much I refresh the page about twice a day! It’s good because it’s heartbreaking, because it’s frustratingly realistic, because it’s complex in the way that only something written with empathy, intelligence, and soul can be. I can’t wait for more!

I’m so glad that you have found the complexity of this story and, primarily, the relationships in it interesting enough to take the time to analyze. The messiness of these unexpected circumstances was really the highlight of writing this fic for me!

I agree, Joel made the wrong decision. He doesn’t see that at the time of making it because his judgment is so clouded and his concept of Ellie is that she’s hurt, but he doesn’t think for a second she could die. Again, this is probably more to do with his own scattered line of thinking than founded on any of the evidence laid out in front of him. He chooses wrong when faced with a decision that is impossible to really pick right. That moment in and of itself was very important to me, and I’m glad it brought up emotions for you! Now it’s a struggle of finding balance while also working through the guilt he feels for both everything with Ellie AND twenty one years missed with Sarah. My man is not having a good time while he’s also been gifted the greatest miracle anyone could ask for all in one go.

There’s really just so much to explore and different variations on these relationships to take and I’m trying to balance writing all there is I want to, while also keeping this thing an actual readable length 😅 It makes me so happy to know that you are enjoying reading this fic and again I really appreciate you taking the time reaching out to me in regards to it! I can promise you that this story has not been abandoned, but unfortunately I have managed to pretty significantly concuss myself about a week and a half ago and consequently am unable to look at screens.
