A few people have asked how the Heated Rivalry show can give the audience all of Shane's interior panic and general lack of chill without using a Wonder Years style voiceover interior monologue. I'll tell you how: by casting @hudsonwilliamsofficial as Shane. The way his face shows you everything Shane is thinking is incredible. Most of the scenes I got to watch being filmed in person were Shane scenes and I was constantly delighted by Hudson's performance. Like, that was Shane. Right there in front of me and Hudson the real person is super nice and I feel like he's on my level of excitement about this show, which makes me feel more normal. ❤️

Anyway, I can't really look at this photo without my brain shattering because they look so perfect, but you guys can enjoy.

kizu natsuki naming her four main characters with the kanji from the four seasons. akihiko with aki 秋 (autumn), haruki with haru 春(spring), ritsuka with ka 夏 (summer), mafuyu with fuyu 冬 (winter) then makes major events happen in the season connected to the character like yuki's death in winter, mafuyu falling in love with ritsuka in summer, akihiko confessing to haruki and them getting together in spring, akihiko leaving the basement and breaking up with ugetsu in autumn, haruki meeting akihiko for the first time in autumn.

not to mention how she emphasizes it.

yuki's death in winter:

mafuyu's first performance with the band and singing fuyu no hanashi as well as mafuyu admitting to hiiragi there's someone he likes (ritsuka) in summer

haruki meeting akihiko in fall and started to grow his hair from then on

fall season and akihiko leaving the basement and breaking up with ugetsu (i love how kizu really said "there was no going back")

akihiko confessed to haruki and they got together in spring

In volume 3 of Turns Out My Online Friend is My Real-Life Boss! by Nmura, our narrative flashes back to Ren Kumada as a child. He is running away from home when he bumps into an older student, Makoto Shirase, who expresses concern about him. Then, Ren meets our protagonist, Kazuma Hashimoto, who doesn't have an umbrella for the rain and Ren gives him his. (Ren has an unrequited crush Kazuma in the present day narrative).

Days later, while Kazuma is looking for Ren to return his umbrella, Makoto Shirase, approaches him, at first mistaking him for Ren  (and, unbeknownst to them both, meets his future boyfriend for the first time!)

Flash forward to our present day narrative, where Kazuma tells Mokoto about this memory and "the pretty man" he met and Makoto is jealous (of his past self!)

Sounds complicated? Especially for a manga so cute and light in tone, but it's fitting in the way it mirrors and reflects the way our main characters meet and interact, their love triangles and misunderstandings in both their online game and irl. Love it!

A trope I love is when two characters falling in love have actually met before as children. Not as in childhood friendship per se, but as in a brief encounter, a happenstance, a coincidence. Sometimes the characters remember their meeting and sometimes they do not but either way, the encounter was meaningful, emotionally resonant and becomes relevant to their relationship.

Throwback to the first time I watched The Case Files of Jeweler Richard. So glad to see so much Richard and Seigi content on my dash lately!

Recently I was sick and confined to the couch and binged both the gay cafe show (Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori) and the gay jeweler show (The Case Files of Jeweler Richard), two of the gentlest, most comforting animes in which a variety of hospitable handsomes enjoy food and drink, help others with warmth and compassion and better each other in incredibly tender, deeply affectionate and queer ways. The voice casts are top notch, too.

Gotta admit, I'm low key miffed none y'all have posted more about these heart-warming shows. ;) I would have watched them sooner had I known! Anyway, if you like, you can make it up to me with similar recs. I'm looking for slice of life that is tasty, warm, queer if possible - like chicken soup for my anime soul. Any ideas?
