How to remain productive with online classes:
A few tips from a broke neuro-divergent academic
Try and wake up early, and go to bed early too. I’m not saying get up at 5 (unless that’s you’re thing) but sleeping into noon is a productivity blackhole. I go for 8 or 8:30, generally, but that’s just what works for me.
Get dressed for the day. I’m not talking like, jeans and a business casual outfit, but a clean pair of sweatpants, fresh underwear, and a new shirt can really put you in the mood for a new morning.
Have a workspace. Whether it be the kitchen table, a desk, a spot on the floor with a lap desk, have a place that’s dedicated to your work. Have items that signify that workspace too, like your book, planner, laptop, lamp, whatever. It can help you get into the zone, being in that space.
Have a morning drink. I choose earl grey tea with honey and cream, but black coffee, herbal tea, lemon water, whatever works for you is awesome, as long as itll wake you up and start your day.
To do lists. To do lists and to do lists and more to do lists. I have three. One is a post it weekly planner deal (3.99 at a local grocery store). it’s a weekly spread already set up, and if you’re anything like me, its really hard to set up a weekly spread. Then I have an app called Ike. I have a daily to do list I write on that app, and then I have four more to-do lists of what I have to for each specific class.




Spread out your assignments. Don’t overwhelm yourself. If you’re professors are like mine, and have the due date for each module as Sunday at midnight. What I do is spread out all my assignments from Monday to Saturday, and I leave Sunday blank, so anything I didn’t do that week, I finish on Sunday. It works for me, it might work for you.
Have a folder for each class, and a notebook for each class. I hate spending money, I’m broke as hell, sono al verde as the Italians say, but a 0.99 cent folder and a 0.25 cent notebook can do wonders for motivating one to fill them up.
Study with a drink. Tea, water, coffee, whatever, but my go to is generally a warm drink. I cannot study if I’m cold, I get tired and groggy, so warm socks, a robe, and a hot drink really keep me going.
Take breaks. Make time for your hobbies, for something fun. Working without stopping absolutely destroys my motivation, and let me tell you, when I feel like that, an episode of Avatar and a snack gets me right back on the wagon.
Do self check ins. Does your back hurt? Are you sad? Stressed? Do you have to pee? Are you hungry? Never put your homework over your health. You won’t be able to get anything done well anyway if you’ve got those blocks.
Most importantly, get enough sleep. I beg of you. Sleep is so important, and it’s the game changer, at least to me. We as students have such an amazing opportunity to get more sleep than we ever have before during the year. Take advantage of that.

how do you plan for your revision during exam week?
identify tasks and subtasks until the steps are crystal clear/concrete
e.g. not ‘go through notes’ but ‘read notes on chapter 1 and memorize equations and terminology’
not ‘past papers’ but ‘complete practice problems for topic A’ or ‘do half of the questions on the practice final’
the tasks and subtasks can change as you progress, e.g. if you find out that your understanding is weak for a certain topic, you’d do more practice problems for that topic
identify their respective deadlines (usually exam day) and the optimal order in which they should be done
e.g. study before doing past papers
then you could have something like ‘study all topics by monday, complete practice questions by tuesday’
estimate how much time it will take to do each task/subtask
incorporate flexible time blocking and the abcde method
what might also be of interest: how to create an efficient revision schedule (wrote this in high school but a lot of it’s still applicable)

Sometimes self care is studying for that test. Sometimes it’s cleaning your room. Sometimes it’s having that conversation you’re afraid of having, confront that person you’re afraid to confront. Sometimes it’s not just wrapping yourself up in a blanket and relaxing. Sometimes instead, it’s taking action against the problem.

concept: let’s go to bed at 9pm instead of 3am. let’s drink more water for our bodily health and less coffee for the aesthetic. let’s not skip breakfast because it’s worth running a little behind even if it’s just some fruit or cereal. let’s go socialize even if we’re kinda nervous. let’s love ourselves when we feel down, because flaws are not the end of the world. let’s work hard but take breaks in between instead of procrastinating and then rushing. let’s ignore what people who don’t know us have to say about us behind our backs. let’s be kind to each other because we’re all trying here. let’s hype up being mentally healthy rather than being perfect. let’s live our lives like we want to.

I want you to know that I was never clever, I was never top of the class and I don’t say this to be modest, I was always in the middle, never really noticed as anything special. I had to work for my grades and where I am today, I mean work my ass off, I failed my favourite subject at a level, the one I was about to do at uni but went to uni for that subject anyway because it’s all I want to do. I want you to know that no matter how many set backs you have, you work your hardest you will get there and you will be happy.

DAPA Verbs

If you have been in a French class before, you have most likely heard of the DAPA verbs, although maybe not referred to with this acronym. The DAPA verbs are “Détester, aimer, préférer, adorer” which are verbs that take a proceeding definite article (le, la, les).
For example, in the book Teaching French Grammar in Context (1), the authors state that if a learner wants to say “I like cats,” they should translate the sentence as “j’aime les chats” and not “j’aime des chats” which may be more natural for native anglophones (and I know this isn’t something I have to cite but I am using their examples so it’s best that I do).
This rule is to follow for all 4 DAPA verbs :
Tu détestes les chiens
Nous préférons les pâtes
Ils adorent la musique.
The reasoning behind this is that it is a broad subject or category of things you are saying you like (unless you are referring to something specific like “the music” as stated above which would still be “la musique”). In broad categories in French, the definite articles “le, la, les” are used.

the hottest study tip i will ever give: keep a tiny stapler on you. i bought a “craft stapler�� for $4.99 at a marshalls my freshman year and perpetually kept it in my bag. the # of times i’ve been hailed as a goddess when fellow students are turning in mandatorily-stapled-papers would be payment enough, were it not for the # of times in college i’ve put 2 plastic plates of free luncheon food together & stapled the edges for a free tubberware. pls buy a tiny stapler
