Chapter One
The wind whipped as she walked home from work. It was a Saturday night, and all Kaylin could think about was being in her warm flat with a cup of tea. It was a block from her work to where her apartment was. She had made this walk for a solid year; whether it was rain, snow, or shine she made her way through the dark streets of downtown New York. But on this night, something seemed different. As Kalyn walked alone down the long dark road, she passed an ally,, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw what she thought to be a drug deal gone wrong. All she could do was to walk by quick and when out of earshot she would call the cops. She ended up calling the cops when she was in the safety of her locked apartment. She dialed 911 and gave the dispatcher her name and address. Her voice trembled as she gave him the description of what the men were wearing. One was wearing a dark leather jacket and baggy jeans; he had an accent that she recognized to be from either Brooklyn or Boston. The one who was being beaten was from around the Manhattan area. She knew that because that was the same accent as what she had. She hung up the phone and was just about to make her tea when there was a knock at the door. Nervously, she crept to the door and looked out the peephole. There was a young girl, who was in her early 20’s standing at her door. She was wearing long skintight black pants, black boots, a red top, and a dark blue jacket. It was Kaylin’s younger sister, Rose. She unlocked the door, pulled Rose inside and then locked the door once more. “Hey! Stop that, what’s your deal, she asked. “Well, I just saw some shady shit happening down near the ally. I actually just got off the phone with the cops. So, yeah. That’s my deal”, she snapped. “So, what’s up?” Rose gulped, now unsure of how to proceed. “Well, I was going to ask if you wanted to go out tonight but since you snapped at me like that, I guess I will just leave you alone and go back home.” As she turned to leave, Kaylin pulled her back. “Stay please. At least for a couple hours? I don’t want to be here alone. Blake is out of town right now and the last thing I need is some shady shit to happen while he is gone. I’m sorry. Please stay?” Rose turned toward the door, paused for a moment, and then turned back. “Sure. But you have to do one thing for me.” Kaylin sighed, knowing her sister always asked for favors later that would typically be very large. “What is it now?” Rose laughed, “It’s small, I promise. Just a cup of tea.” Then they laughed. “That, I can do.” As Kaylin started the tea for the second time, there was a large commotion outside her door. Rose went to go see what it was this time and all it was were two teens in what seemed to be a wrestling match. Not knowing if she should go out and try to break it up, Rose looked at Kaylin, who mouthed “no” to her. Reluctantly, Rose returned to Kaylin’s side. Once the tea was hot, they turned on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and sat by the fire. At some point, they fell asleep. There was one point in the night where Rose woke up to the sound of , the apartment door unlocking. Panicked, she shook her sister. “Kaylin, wake up. Someone is breaking into your apartment! I’ll call the cops.” Now, Kaylin was wide awake and filled with the same fear she had had earlier in the day. But seeing as it was only an apartment, she grabbed a lamp, hoping it would help her fight. The doorknob turned and the door squeaked open. Standing in the doorway was a man in his mid to late ’20s, scruffy brown hair, 6-1’ medium build, with glasses. It was Blake Cline, Kaylin’s boyfriend.
Kaylin let out a sigh of relief and walked over to him. Thank god it was just you. What are you doing home anyway? I thought you were supposed to be across the country right now..” Blake was a hockey player on the college team. The two of them had met through a mutual friend, and Blake’s ex, Cloey Patrick. But that was 1.5 years ago. After Blake and Cloey split, Kaylin was there for Blake to help him cope with it. What was the reason for the split in the first place? It’'s always one of four things: mutual- which rarely ever happens, one person gets tired of the other, one person is caught cheating, and finally, one person is using the other to make a third party jealous. In the case of Cloey and Blake, it was a combination of Cloey cheating and using Blake to make Logan Barkley, Blake’s team-mate notice her. And ultimately, she ended up dating him. That hurt Blake a lot, and he confided in Kaylin about this. “So why are you home early?” Blake was quiet for another minute and then answered. “The game was canceled... The other teams', It's coach died...” “OH MY GOD” “Yeah. Anyways, I need to go to bed. I’m tired after all that travel. Goodnight.” Then he walked over to the bedroom door, opened it, walked in, and shut it behind him. Rose walked over to Kaylin and whispered, “He’s hiding something from you. I can feel it. Please just be careful.” “I know. I don’t want to know, but I know. We can talk about it more tomorrow. It’s late. Let’s sleep.” Kaylin walked over to her bedroom door, opened it, walked in, and shut the door.

Crime and Vengeance
Prologue: As she ran, she could hear him. She knew what she had done. But there was no way to explain now. It was as though her world was crumbling around her. The rain had made it so that as she ran, he would be able to hear her more clearly. Not to mention, with the rain came the fog. That was one of the last things she needed, not being able to see. That didn’t matter now though, she ran as though her life depended on it. Why had she thought that she could get away with her indiscretions forever? She would soon learn that all actions come with consequences. She spotted a dumpster in the distance, next to a dive bar. Sure, it was the last place she wanted to hide, but what other choice did she have? She would do anything to get away from the monster that was within half a mile away. She dove behind the dumpster and waited. Hoping that this whim of a plan had worked. Praying that she could hear him run past, never to return. He did manage to find her, though. And when he did, he took the hurt, the anger, the sadness, and the jealousy out on her. She begged him to stop, hoping there was a little human left in him. But he just continued as though he was deaf to her cries and continued on until her last breath.
