Audelia hadn’t actually discussed her new position with anyone yet, however the Purebloods were fans of gossip, so she wasn’t surprised Blandon knew. She was certain everyone with connections to those in the Inner Circle were aware of it. And she certainly did not mind. “Perhaps. If that is indeed the case, you should be safe of being introduced to every other single lady here. Though you may be questioned about me, which I do apologise for. But if that does happen, you have my permission to allude to whatever may make your life easier.” If he needed to pretend that they shared a ‘bond’ to give him a break for once, Audelia wouldn’t argue. Blandon was, after all, from a good family. “No, of course not, it was just a little warning. I don’t want you getting into any trouble here over something as silly as name-calling.”

“For now, certainly.” Blandon inclined his head slightly, relieved that Audelia had given him an out from all of this romantic pushing. Especially as he had no doubt that she would play her part admirably, too. “Thank you, you are too kind. But also don’t be too scared if Uncle Caym decides that he wishes to talk with you; he is more bark than bite.” Even if his bark could be ferocious. “That warning was well appreciated, sometimes I forget just how important names and reputations can be around here. It makes life so tiring at times.”

“Well,” Rhea replied with a smirk, “you certainly won’t hear me complaining about that.” While her job had plenty of advantages, the salary wasn’t one of them and she was sure spending time with Blandon would be rewarding for her cause in one way or another.

He smiled softly at Rhea, it seemed like he had actually managed to make a good impression on someone for once. “I really ought to be going now, Rhea. But if you ever want to talk again I have plenty of free time.” Maybe a little bit too much of it.

The change of topic came so abruptly, a soft laugh was pulled from Audelia’s lips. She brought her free hand up to politely mask the sound, but the amusement still shone in her eyes. “I don’t, but I’m certain you might. Has your father been on your case about chatting them up? I am aware I am not the most eligible single daughter, however I will gladly be very intrigued in all the charming things you are saying to me should he be watching.” And just to prove her point, she put on a sweet smile and rested her hand lightly on his arm for a moment - lingering just long enough for anyone to assume she was interested - before pulling back. Now, a very real blush came to her cheeks and she shook her head. “I really appreciate that, Blandon. However it is not very polite to call anyone an idiot.” 

“Yes, him, Uncle Caym and what he feels like every other father here,” he might have sighed were it not for hearing Audelia’s laugh. It was rude to not smile when you had just made a lady laugh. “With your new found position? I think that you will be finding yourself with an ever increasing list of suitors in the near future.” Her hand on his arm was comforting but, more importantly, Blandon was sure he could feel at least one pair of eyes trained on him. That would give him at least a month’s worth of excuses. “I am . . . possibly a little bit too tipsy to be that concerned with being that polite all the time. Besides, it is not like I actually called anyone that to their face.”

Two dumb youths, or people who are actually married? Hmm?” There was so much trust she had for the system. It was not the worst thing in the world to know you would be well off. To know your children would be as well. Love was a silly thing to marry for. “Careful who you are unbecoming too.”

“People lie, Rowle, especially when they have a show to put on.” He was rather surprised at just how much faith Freya had in the system they had to exist in; there were few people he trusted less with deciding upon a healthy marriage than his parents. “Yes, yes, yes, I know, I could probably give that lecture from memory by now. Which is precisely why I am not talking to anyone with real influence currently.”

“What is there to be sarcastic about?” Freya looked at Blandon with confusion, ready to repeat the words she had just said more slowly and with vibrant enunciation if only so he could understand it better. “The families are well suited for each other. They’re close in age as well. They’re lucky.” She said simply without much humor. “And it’s not very becoming to tell a woman she’s offputing.” Freya had to do all she could not to snarl at him.

“So you have no problem with the fact that they are both being forced into this? That two children are just having basically the entirety of their adult lives fixed for them before they even finish their education?” Blandon could understand many things about Pureblood society but the arranged marriages? Those were deeply shameful. “I gave up caring about being becoming about half a bottle of champagne ago.”

“It’s a happy union for the families, fortuitous in circumstance for both.” One would only hope to be presented with such a pleasant match. “But if anybody tries to describe tonight as anything but that, well, it would be quite humorous indeed.” Freya had no gripes with the occasion, a facet of her heritage and family culture that she never questioned. Love was complicated and unexpected, fickle in nature, but money, reputation and power were not.

There was something deeply unsettling about what Freya was saying, it sounded like she wanted him to believe her but it sounded wrong to Blandon, there was just that something a little bit wrong. “I cannot tell if you are being sarcastic about that or not and it is rather offputting,” he began, words forming slowly in his mouth. “More offputting than if you did honestly believe it.”

“All hidden intentions are open if you pay enough attention. But frankly, I appreciate those who get to the point quickly. It does save a lot of trouble if their intentions are something I am not interested in.” Too many times she’d been forced into long conversations with people - mainly men - to find their only real intention was to take her to bed. She could have saved them both the trouble of that conversation had they made those intentions clearer immediately. If the evening hadn’t already been going splendidly, his words brought a true smile to her face. She had told herself those words repeatedly, but to hear them from someone that was in a similar situation meant so much to her. “I really appreciate that, Blandon. Thank you.” She shook her head, the smile never leaving her face. 

Audelia sounded oddly like his father then; he didn’t care about paying attention, he didn’t want to treat his whole life like some complex game of chess, all he wanted was for people to actually say what they meant for once. “It would be nice if people were like that but I would still have to deal with politely refusing suggestions. Life is just a lot easier when you can feign ignorance. Incidentally, do you happen to know just how many people here have single daughters.” It was no more abrupt of a segueway than countless otheres he had been subjected to that evening.

She smiled and Blandon could see what people meant when they had called Audelia beautiful. Her face really did seem to brighten at the compliment. “It was just the truth, you would have to be an idiot not to see how good you are.”
