Iran International: Channel abandons the UK following regime threats
Iran International, an independent television network, has suspended operations in the United Kingdom due to threats made against its
London-based journalists. The decision was made due to a "significant escalation in state-backed threats from Iran," according to the Persian-language TV channel.
"Threats had grown to the point where it was felt that protecting the channel's staff was no longer possible," it said.
The station will continue to broadcast from its headquarters in Washington, DC.
Police warned two British-Iranian journalists from the channel of a possible threat to their lives in November. There was an armed police presence near the channel's studios in Chiswick, west London, and concrete barriers were placed outside the building.
The Metropolitan Police in London said 15 plots to kidnap or kill UK-based Iranian regime opponents had been foiled since the beginning of 2022.
"I can't believe it's come to this," network general manager Mahmood Enayat said.
"A foreign state has posed such a significant threat to the British public on British soil that we must relocate," he explained.
"Let's be clear: this is a threat to the British public as a whole, not just our TV station."
