I already made a post about this, generally, but I realized I forgot to properly address something about Vash's hypocrisy. And that is specifically about the Plants.
I have written it before and I will do it again now, but Vash, while he wants for everyone to be alive and well, he kinda neglects his sisters and their suffering. Like, don't get me wrong, he cares about them and tries to help them when necessary, but it still doesn't change that more often than not the Dependent Plants end up being the ones sacrificed, either in terms of their well being or in terms of surviving (especially when they are put through a Last Run by the Humans in order to produce more resources).
And while I get that Knives caused the Fall to save his siblings, we aren't sure if Humans put Plants through Last Runs as much before the Fall, as we see it when they are on NML (though, this is speculation on my part, like we know now that at least in Stampede they always kept a sample cell of the original Plant entity to clone more Plants from, which would mean that probably Humans didn’t care so much if they put Plants through a Last Run in Stampede when they could be replaced. Which ya, paints a pretty bad image of Humanity or at least of the people that knew about this and cloned the Plants in the first place; though there’s also the problem of these people probably having the mentality that “Plants aren’t really alive, they are just tools that produce our resources, kinda like fossil fuels or renewable energy). For not saying that sometimes Plants don't die just by being put through a Last Run, as it is stated that some of them also just die on their own, specifically because of the conditions of the environment of NML. And it's also not helped by the fact that most people on NML don't know how to take care of Plants. Also, at a certain point, Plants would die just because they cannot produce and sustain themselves anymore (which, I guess would count as a natural death for them – maybe? Like, they aren't really immortal, I think...).
Obviously, the Plants are at the mercy of everyone and the most innocent in all of this. Knives hurts and destroys everyone (yes, including the Plants that he so much wants to save), the Humans hurt and destroy themselves and the Plants while trying to survive and Vash hurts the Plants and Humans by keeping a neutral stance when it comes to the Plants.
And what do I mean by neutral. I mean that, well, again, Vash has a tendency to choose Humanity's well being over that of the Plants. Like seen on the sandsteamer or, in Stampede specifically, when he finds Knives in the ship full of Red Plants being put through a Last Run, like, there he seems to be more worried about the Humans being killed by Knives over the Red Plants that are also dying in the same room, for e.g. But there's also the problem that we don't see him interact with Plants all that much throughout all versions of Trigun. Though, it is shown that he does care about the Plants as well and he isn't doing anything that actively hurts them. Really, Vash is in a kind of a weird position. It's kinda like his overall peaceful beliefs that bring up the argument that "sometimes it would be better for everyone if Vash killed or let other people, like Wolfwood, kill when needed". But he can't do that or let that happen... which kinda keeps a never ending cycle of violence. Plus, not everyone (especially Humans) has the capacity to withstand fighting against someone without resorting to killing, especially if their adversary has the intent of harming/killing them to begin with. Which Vash sometimes seems to forget when he gets mad that some people weren't able to solve a conflict without hurting/killing. (Like, sometimes Vash be having some high standards for the people around him...)
Also, kinda ironically, the best solution for all of this, after the Fall (and excluding getting Knives the proper help he needed in order to deal with his trauma before he caused the Fall), would have been for Vash and Knives to stick together and, despite their differences, reach a "middle ground" where they would work with the Humans to better the conditions on NML for both Humans and Plants. And that way, Humans would've known from the start that Plants are people, that Independents like Vash and Knives exist and they would probably have learned together how to take care of the Plants. It would probably still not be a "perfect solution" and conflicts would still exist, obviously, but it probably would have reduced the amount of suffering people would have had to go through on NML.
But unfortunately, Knives and Vash were incapable of reaching a solution for both species to live in some kind of harmony and their conflict got worse, and so did the amount of people, both Humans and Plants, that were hurt and/or killed in their conflict and in the other conflicts that sparked between desperate Humans looking to survive. And despite the many people of the SEEDS Ships that survived the Fall, like the people from Ship 3, they aren’t much help as they don't seem to know much about Plants (as I pointed out before, it really looks like most people on the ships weren’t that well informed on Plants – also, interesting how Luida was shown to be incapable to access certain files of the ships in Stampede, which btw she got access to the more general files on Plants because she became the new captain of ship 3 after the Fall, which kinda implies that not everyone has access to those, I mean beside the captain the other people that make sense having access to those are the Plant scientists, and those scientists also seem to have blocked the information about the experiments on Tesla, so… what else did they hide...). Also, doesn't help that most people on NML also don't have the equipment to, like, study Plants/reach out to the Plants. Plus, most people are too worried about their own survival to actually stop and realize that Plants are people. (Also, okay, ya, it doesn’t help, as it can be seen with certain people from ship 3, that some Humans think of Vash as a freak/monster and are afraid of him. But, usually, once Vash starts helping Plants and interacting with those people they actually grew a liking to him and, probably, some changed their more negative opinions on Independents or more specifically on Vash, which can open the door to them accepting other Independents and/or on seeing Plants as people. Which, btw it’s also shown in the manga that some people actually do see Plants as people and talk to them kindly for giving them what they need, though they don’t seem to realize the hardships Plants go through, as they cannot communicate back to Humans… so there’s that… and also, you know, the cults dedicated to the Plants, like the EoM, like they aren’t the best people but they at least have an appreciation of Plants, and even as divine beings, to Knives's benefit (funny how that works)... there are more layers to it than just “Humans are always cruel to Plants”).
And this problem is so complicated. Because on one hand, Humans keep using Plants until they eventually die. If Plants all die, Humans die too. If the Plants can somehow be freed, most people, Vash and Knives included, don't know how to do that without putting the Plants at risk of dying. Like, it doesn't seem to be that simple as getting the Plants out of the tanks that keep them alive.
Like ya, Knives managed to do it by absorbing other Plants in the manga, but that didn't seem to be the best solution either, as Plants were still suffering and didn't seem to agree to ending Humanity like Knives wanted. Plus, Knify boy and other Independents that would do this also risk losing their individuality and the Plant amalgamation could turn into something uncontrollable that causes more pain for the Plants and destruction to everyone and everything around them.
Ahshdusjsjajkkkkaaa. Like, the situation with the Plants throughout Trigun is so messy, it's hard to talk about. Because on one hand both Knives and Vash try to help them, but they also end up either worsening their suffering or keeping it going slowly as Humans use them, and on the other NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO HELP THESE POOR BEINGS TRAPPED IN JARS. And it's also hard to "put blame" on one single person or group of people. Like, the only ones I can think of that can be seen as responsible for the Plants' suffering were the first Humans that found/created(?) them and decided that " ya, they are our new resource machines, who cares if they look like people and probably have their own needs. We need to survive", which is an information that doesn't seem to be mainstream to Humans, maybe just certain members of the SEEDS Project had access to it from the start (like I pointed out before). And then like the next generations that went with the SEEDS ships lost that knowledge of the Plants, or well maybe most people didn't have access to it except the captains of the ships (I’m kinda repeating myself, but ya)... And also, like, probably only those scientists from ship 5 and Rem got the chance to see Plants are people by meeting Tesla and then later Rem and Conrad meeting Vash and Knives. But the scientists deluded themselves into continuing the experiments on Tesla because she isn't like a "real child", she is a bio-machine or something. Like, I'm not excusing any of them for torturing a child to death, obviously, but I also think it's unfair to think, like Knives, that all Humans that came after these people should suffer and/or be killed for the wrongs of others that aren't even alive anymore.
Yes, it's important that Humans on NML (and generally all Humans, really) realize the wrongs Humanity did to the Plants, so that then the harm can be stopped and so that Humans and Plants can co-exist. And to reach an equilibrium where no one needs to suffer and die. And that's what Vash has been aiming for the whole time, but it was hard to do so while living in a constant hostile environment where even people that are the same have difficulties in understanding each other and in not hurting/killing each other for their own survival. (Knives included, tbh – like I would say he doesn't understand Plants either. You never see this man actually try to communicate with his sisters [except in the manga when he asks the Plants to fuse with him – but that’s about it, and ya, the fact that the Plants fused with him can be taken as them feeling similarly to Knives about their situation, but they also don’t seem to want Humanity gone as shown through the few flashbacks of the perspective of the Dependent Plants on Humans, them thanking Vash for all he has done for them and agreeing to “there being love & peace” between them and Humans]. And he doesn't take Vash seriously a lot of the time either. Yet, he does most of the talking for them, uh…).
And, funny thing is, despite everything going on between Vash and Knives, it was them together, even though they were fighting, that brought the possibility of a direct connection and understanding between Humans and Plants. So, in a way (a very messy, traumatic and violent way that is), Vash and Knives ended doing what Rem and, probably, the Plant that created them, wanted for them to do, that is for them to be a bridge between Humans and Plants. A very messy bridge, but a bridge nonetheless.
PS: sorry if this is gonna sound rude, but I saw a post about it and it bugged my brain a little, even if I agree with one point that was brought up, which is the point of this post, aka that Vash isn't capable of doing enough to help his sisters on his own and through his path and that in Trigun it's not that simple as pointing Vash as the "hero/good guy" and Knives as the "villain/bad guy". But the other part of the post was that they agreed that Humans should die for the survival of the Plants... and like, I'm pretty sure that the point of the story was to solve this problem in a way in which both species can survive and co-exist and that, well, genocide of whole species is not a good idea (ever). Especially when it is shown that Plants also seem to depend on Humans to survive. Also, Knives always depended on Humans quite a lot, despite hating them, so like?? No, dude, sorry, but the story clearly shows that Plants and Humans need each other... also, not every Human is to blame, like I pointed out before, for the Plants' suffering. And when Plants were freed in the manga the Humans apologized to the Plants and promised to do better by them and make living together somehow work. So no, pretty sure the story isn't meant to say "AcTuaLly HuManS aRE tErrIbLE AnD ShOuld dIE", quite the contrary. And like, ya, I saw them also writing that "this is why I don't like the ending of Trimax", and I'm just... my reaction was like this "???"... like, idk dude, maybe you shouldn't have read a story that, while it also shows Humanity's more horrible traits, shows the good side of Humanity as well and a story that is mainly about HOPE AND PEOPLE AND THINGS IN LIFE CHANGING FOR THE BETTER!!! (I apologize for the salty, but I just needed to rant a little… like, okay, fine, people are entitled to their opinions, but so am I and others, lol. And unfortunately their opinion ignited rant mode in me… also, obviously, I’m not targeting anyone because that would be terrible and I have better shit to do than fandom drama/disagreements… it can be said that post I disagree with inspired me to rant. Kinda excessively – this rant has more than 2400 words, help. Sorry, I’m done now.)
