Kayak update: today was so much fun. I used a hack I found on a blog to make the overlap of the deck and hull fiberglass a clean edge. I used packing tape to mark the seam on the hull. When I fiberglassed the hull, I covered the tape. Today, I was able to just tear the fiberglass and it was a clean edge! Cut out the extra fiberglass and put a second coat of epoxy. Getting really 😆 excited. https://instagr.am/p/CeHY1WpupqZ/

Kayak update: it has been a minute since I have posted. Life got busy. There were a couple weekend of sanding and small prep work that I did not document. Today, I was able to apply the first coat of epoxy and fiberglass to the top half of the kayak. The whole kayak is fiberglassed! Hooray! The next steps are more coats of epoxy. https://instagr.am/p/CeErMlPvw4d/

Kayak update: Big step. I have been fretting about whether I was ready to move onto fiberglassing the hull. Turns out it was fun and satisfying. It appealed to my sense of order and was mediative. It started as a white sheet and magically transformed into this beautiful warm wood color. Very satisfied. https://instagr.am/p/CdCwOUfLOFj/

Kayak update: Took last weekend off from building. I spent a couple hours yesterday sanding and cleaning up the edges of the kayak. I am resisting the desire to strive for perfection at this point and find a happy “good enough” balance. Today, I assembled the coaling for the cockpit and made a tile to clean up the stern. I am prepped to do the first layer of fiberglass on the hull! https://instagr.am/p/Cc_t73RJ3OI/

Kayak update: milestone today: the deck was tacked to the hull. It is officially one piece! It was a little messy and harried but it is done. There are edges that do not exactly line up🤨. The next step will be challenging as I have to seam along the inside by sticking my head into the tight space. Might need to muster some enthusiasm for that step! https://instagr.am/p/CcJj0lLPGU8/

Kayak update: I had a break because I needed to wait for the arrival of the non-drill studs for the foot braces. I had my first real mess up. I tried to install the first step of the foot braces and they got stuck. I had to pry one of them off and had to redo them. Today, I reinstalled the posts for the foot braces and did a lot of prep work. I had to get all the copper wires ready to tack the deck to the bottom. I have to wait for posts to cure before moving forward. https://instagr.am/p/CcG4d_oLL86/

Kayak update(post-date) : It has been awhile since I posted. I forgot to post 2 weeks ago. I finished putting the epoxy in the interior of the kayak. I also taped the deck and did layer one of the deck. https://instagr.am/p/CcG3qf5rZLb/

Explored Healdsburg with my mom for a few days in an extended birthday celebration. Shopped, hiked, ate good food, explored a castle, sipped wine, and visited an old haunt. Lovely time building memories with mom. https://instagr.am/p/CcGTz6JJe3A/

Kayak update: A big weekend for the kayak. Today, I filleted the seams of the hull, added fiberglass tape, and epoxied. Then added a sheet of fiberglass in the cockpit and epoxy. Logged about 8 hours. Body is a little sore. https://instagr.am/p/CbEVvRhLX_A/

Kayak update: Big moves this week. I did the scary move of cutting out the hatch in the deck. I think I mangaged to make to not too janky. Phew! Assembled the hatch spacer and sill- needed to scrounge for enough clamps. The exciting step of removing temporary forms and wires from the hull. It was satisfying to clip off all the wires and smooth out the interior. Prepped for interior fillet work tomorrow. https://instagr.am/p/CbBPpFyPhyd/

Kayak update: Big step today. I tack-welded the hull and deck. This locks the shape of the kayak and there is no going back now! It needs to cure all wrapped up to solidify the shape. Fingers crossed that it will all fit together when it comes time to put it together. https://instagr.am/p/CabIrHwrfPA/

Kayak Update: Had to figure out how to build a support to hold the kayak upright. This is what I ended up engineering this sling. Cleaning up the connections and prepping for epoxy time. https://instagr.am/p/CaTmIdULlHB/

Kayak update #2 Today was deck assembly. Three hours and I have a deck! It is amazing to me how quickly this project takes shape. I am 9 hours into the project and I have the basic form built. Love the curves and shape of this piece. The whole boat photos are just the two pieces placed on top of each other. The next few steps are less exciting, but I am excited to dive in. https://instagr.am/p/CZXxWQLvtxL/

Wooden Kayak project: I decided to challenge myself to learn something new. I have wanted to build a wooden kayak for many years but did not have the bandwidth or resources. With the cheerleading of a colleague, I decided to jump in and work alongside students doing MasterWorks projects at school. Photos are of the unboxing to this weekend’ addition of the sides of the boat. I will post photos of my progress. #lifelonglearning #takingrisks https://instagr.am/p/CZLmz_4L2ZD/
