Brief update, I have no idea when I’m going to have time to get back into this. Or consistent ability to do so. Every time I update my laptop, Clangen breaks, and it has a fun little quirk where it also deletes all my save files. So. That isn’t great for keeping a cohesive storyline.

If I find the time to get back into this and deal with the constant resets, I will. But for now cascadeclan will be on hiatus.

Next update will take a bit longer due to ~finals week~ and ~the dorms kicking us out for the winter~! Rest assured that it will come eventually, just… not as soon as I’d originally intended 😅

Moon 6

Smokestar takes Flashpaw and Lightningpaw as his own apprentices, and gives Shockpaw to Rustfeather, and Thunderpaw to Iceclaw.

Lightningpaw spends half a moon in the medicine den after attacking a Blazeclan apprentice and having her throat get clawed up. She boasts about the scar when she is well enough to talk again.

Thunderpaw and Iceclaw explore the tunnels under their territory, and end up in an unstable tunnel. The ceiling caves in, burying Iceclaw alive but allowing Thunderpaw to escape unharmed. Rosemask is inconsolable and refuses to speak to Thunderpaw, while Foxtail mourns quietly. Thunderpaw is reassigned to Rainypaws.

Lightningpaw

Bloodthirsty, strong swimmer. She wants to prove herself to her clan, and will go to any lengths to bring glory to them. Even if it means using her own kin as leverage.

Flashpaw

Daydreaming, naturally talented fighter. He follows happily in Lightningpaw’s footsteps, but dreams of more.

Shockpaw

Nervous, reluctant follower. Shockpaw just wants everyone to be happy and safe.

Thunderpaw

Quiet, stars-touched. She knows more than she lets on, and what little she has seen scares her.

Your choice here will have consequences.

Note: This moon is structured a little different than normal due to the actual art for the moon just… not turning out right regardless of how many times I try. You get the poll and the siblings’ apprentice references instead.

Shockpaw is intentionally excluded.

Moon 5

Bright’s injury has finally healed! It’s scarred pretty bad, but Bright doesn’t mind. They’ve decided to join the clan, but want to keep their name.

Thunderpaw wants to be a medicine cat, but doesn’t like how Rainypaws looks at her and her siblings when he thinks they can’t see. He looks scared, but they haven’t done anything bad!

…Right?

Due to this moon taking so long to get out, and there being quite literally nothing else interesting that happened, we’ve got a short one today. But! You all should start thinking about which of the siblings you’d like to follow the story of, because soon, we’ll be choosing our main character for the rest of the comic.

Moon 4

Iceclaw and Rosemask find Wolfpelt waiting for them at the Whisperclan border. He is escorted to camp, where he informs Rustfeather and Smokestar of increased hostility from Iceclan. The coming leafbare seems to be a harsh one…

Much to Rainypaws’ chagrin, most of Cascadeclan has caught fleas. Itchy cats make for poor tempers, and Foxtail snaps at Frostleaf.

Shockkit confides in Bright that he doesn’t see stars. He is afraid it means something is wrong with him- what could it mean that their ancestors aren’t in his skies? Bright does his best to comfort Shockkit.

Oh no, Para is procrastinating on cascadeclan with… cascadeclan.

The four clans of this land are Blazeclan, Iceclan, Cascadeclan, and Whisperclan.

Cascadeclan territory:

The Camp - Cascadeclan’s camp is located in a cave system behind a waterfall, accessible through a path that leads up the steppes to it. Clan meetings are hosted in a side cave with a skylight, mini waterfall, and a small pool of water. All the nests are together in one cave, aside from those in the medicine den for the sick and injured. The medicine cats only sleep there when they have ill clanmates to look after.

6. The Upper Steppes - much of Cascadeclan’s land is significantly lower than the other clans. Instead of dropping down in a single cliff or being a steady slope, there are tiered sections marking past flood levels and eroding of the ground.

7. The Islands - at the base of the steppes, the various waterfalls all flow into a basin with many small islands. The land is somewhat swampy from the seasonal flooding, but also rich and fertile for plant life. They also provide good locations for fishing.

8. The Lower Grove - Marking a portion of the boundary between Blazeclan and Cascadeclan is a grove of aspen trees. While not Cascadeclan’s main source of food, the forest is vital when the island basin freezes over, and again later when the snowmelt floods much of their territory. A thunderpath runs between the edge of the trees and Blazeclan, before looping further into the trees and back out of clan territory.

Blazeclan territory:

The Camp - Blazeclan nests in a clearing in a field of heather and brambles. The prickly plants act as a natural defense, with the entrance hidden behind a winding maze. Blazeclan’s dens have loosely woven walls to let in breezes for the intense heats of greenleaf, but thick roofs to keep out snow and rain during the colder moons.

1. The Heather Field - Hiding the camp away, the heather field is a dense weave of its namesake flower, and other prickly foliage. The naturally formed animal trails make for a difficult to traverse terrain, but once one learns the layout, they are perfect for hunting rabbits and smaller rodents.

2. The rest of Blazeclan’s land is pretty homogenous, rolling grassy hills that turn scorching and dry during greenleaf. Wildfires aren’t uncommon to see, during which Blazeclan often takes shelter in the gathering hollow, or with Cascadeclan in extreme situations.

Iceclan territory:

The Camp - Iceclan’s camp is carved directly into the ice and rock that makes up the face of the glacier their name comes from. All of the floor of the camp has been packed with leaf litter, dried prey pelts, and moss to insulate against the ice’s inherent chill. The prey pit is left untouched however, as the Iceclan cats learned it lasted longer in direct contact with the ice. Like Cascadeclan, all of Iceclan sleep communally to stave off the freeze of their camp.

3. The Snow Fields - the surface of the glacier. Snow, ice, and rock stretch out into the mountains, with deadly crevasses gouged into it’s surface. Unsuspecting cats could fall down into these, in which it is almost always a death sentence.

4. The Glacial Face & The Runoff Plains - The face of the glacier is riddled with caves and tunnels that snowmelt pours out from every season but leafbare. The brittle ice that much of it is made of can crumble off, a danger to anyone walking below. The runoff plains are a field of nutrient rich soil and grasses, fed by the minerals that the glacier has picked up over time. Herbs grow thickly here, vital to Iceclan when so much of their territory is inhospitable to plant life.

Whisperclan territory

Whisperclan Camp - Whisperclan set up on a plateau in their woodland, with the only entrance being a hollowed tree with a soil ramp inside. Thorn bushes grow up the edges of the plateau and form a natural barrier, with less thorny bushes forming the dens. Careful weaving of the branches has made the dens completely waterproofed over many seasons, and cats tend to decorate their living spaces with pretty rocks, plants, and feathers.

10. The High Aspens - The entirety of Whisperclan’s claimed land is an aspen forest, a much larger, older forest than the lower grove. Fog pools between the trees every night, and even lingering through the colder days of leafbare. Whisperclan’s foliage is filled with a diverse array of prey, though they have the second lowest access to medicinal herbs in comparison to Iceclan’s runoff flats and Cascadeclan’s mini marshlands.

11. The Foothills - The aspens stretch right up to the mountains, where the trees grow sparser and the ground rockier. Whisperclan tends not to head this way as often, not suited to the mountain environment in the ways Iceclan is.

Neutral Territories

5. The Gathering Hollow & Star Spire - The clans hold gatherings in a hollow just above the steppes, and set into the runoff flats of Iceclan. A tunnel leads down from the hollow, connecting to a cave system that leads to the Star Spire. With such close proximity to Cascadeclan’s cave systems, it is theorized they connect, however the unstable nature of these peripheral tunnels discourages exploration.

9. The Mountains - Past Iceclan and Cascadeclan, the mountains rise up into a jagged skyline. A group of cats is claimed to live in the mountains, but they haven’t been sought out. According to stories passed down by elders, the founder of the clans came from the mountains. An apprentice who fell during a journey, washed out of the mountains and into what became Cascadeclan.

What brings you motivation/inspo/what do you enjoy making the most?

In all honesty? Procrastination fuels my creativity. Now, you’d think ‘oh, it’s summer! Para doesn’t have classes to worry about, there’s gonna be a ton of updates!’ Hah. As if.

I got dealt the funkiest hand when it comes to motivation, and all my creativity either hits while I’m zoning out in Biolec, or when there’s an assignment I really don’t want to do. I’m sure there’s a god or ancestor or something laughing at me right now. It is pretty amusing, lol.

In terms of inspiration? There’s a lot of clangen blogs out there that made me think ‘oh, I want to do that!’ Such as Razmerry’s PATFW, the one with Cherrystar (i’m so sorry I forgot a lot of the names 😭), ghostie Thorn with her four kits, and Ashpaw is Alone. There’s others too, so many others.

I chose pixel art because it was fast, something I’ve never done before, and interesting! I don’t have to stress over slight wiggles in my lines, cause all the lines are janky and squareish anyway!

Aand for the storyline? A lot of it is dictated by the hands of Clangen fate, but it’s set in the world of an AU I made almost seven years ago. Somewhere out there, local mary sue sisters Darkfeather and Nightshade are running around doing cat crime or something. It’s great.

Woah, guess who’s back! It’s me, thats who! I decided that poor Echomist has a really, really boring design, so she’s been banished from the place as Whisperclan deputy. So, that’s why I’m back pestering you all instead of throwing a new Moon update and running!

Frostleaf- Why would you hurt Lightningkit like that??

Frostleaf flattens her ears and looks past you, staring into the distance. She seems sad, sheepish, maybe disappointed in herself?

“It’s not an acceptable excuse, no kit should be treated the way I had Lightningkit. I was already stressed, and her misbehaving pushed me over the edge. I’d just- Smokestar and I have been trying to have kits for so many seasons, and none of them survived. Of course I’d come up with an idealized version of what finally raising kits would be like, and I think part of me thought that kits of my own blood would have been… better somehow.”

Frostleaf shook her head, as though dispelling the thought from her mind. It was a terrible thing to think, and poor Lightningkit had suffered for it. Smokestar had smoothed things over for her, but the damage had already been done, and she didn’t think a simple ‘sorry’ could buy her adopted daughter’s forgiveness.

Hey Smokestar why is the clan so low on warriors? Did something bad happen?

“Many ‘something bad’s happened.

“A rogue warrior from Whisperclan, Olivebloom (@juniperstar), managed to sneak into our camp and kill Archwing and Applecloud (@speedythekitty).

“There was also a flood after a particularly snowy winter followed by a hot spring. All the runoff from Iceclan and Whisperclan’s territories submerged almost all our land, since we live on a floodplain. Honeypaw (@the-moth-from-elsewhere), Heatherfrond, and Eddie drowned, while Verminbright (@frozenclan) was poisoned by the sick fish afterwards.”

“And all through the past 24 moons, we haven’t had many kits survive past a moon old. Foxtail is the only one left of his litter, and Frostleaf has lost multiple litters to sickness and prey shortages. After Foxtail, Rainypaws is the next youngest Named cat, at least 60 or so moons between him and me.”

(So, uh. Sorry about killing all your donated OCs? And happy pride month to poor Verminbright and Eddie 😭. And a special apology to Juniperstar for making their Olive into a murderer; I’d made the sketch for that panel before asking for oc sacrifices, and bloom was the only one with sufficient fluff to fit it. And Honeystar has been turned into an apprentice due to me drawing them too small :’) But! Thanks for trusting me with them, they were all lovely to draw! ^^ )

Moon 3

After being distraught for an entire moon, Lightningkit confronts Smokestar about what Frostleaf told her, and nearly starts crying again as she asks, “Am I not your kit?”

Smokestar sneaks her out of camp, to explain to her why Frostleaf said what she had. He tells her that she and her brothers came from outside the clan as a blessing from the skies, and that while they aren’t his by blood, he still loves her and her brothers.

Rustfeather, Flashkit, and Iceclaw share a carp together, the meal ending in a small fishing lesson when Flashkit asks Iceclaw how she caught it. Flashkit manages to catch a strange minnow in the camp’s underground stream!

Frostleaf and Rosemask go on a border patrol to get out of camp for a bit, following along the thunderpath between Cascadeclan and Blazeclan. They find an injured loner bleeding out on the side of the thunderpath, and bring him back to the camp. Days later when he wakes up, he thanks the clan for their hospitality, and tells them his name- Bright. He doesn’t know if he will stay yet, but is convinced to stay until he is healed.

Now that the cats I’m drawing generally actually look like cats, I’m willing to take a stab at some other supplementary stuff! The options I have for you all today are;

-> Character References! I don’t think I’ve given any information about the Cascade cats yet, and I should probably make some proper refs that aren’t just quickly thrown together designs slapped on a base. So you all could learn stuff like their ages!! And how many cats are even in the clan! And who has what roles! (I will say, I’m pretty sure everyone has been at least mentioned by now.)

-> Story Intermissions! Exactly what they sound like. Probably not long at all, but they would have stuff like ~dialogue~ and ~thought bubbles~ and ~more than one art panel per topic~.

I’ll probably get around to doing both these things eventually anyway, it’s just whether you all want it sooner, and don’t mind a longer wait between moons so that I can get all eleven? Twelve? Living cats done before Stuff starts Happening. The intermissions will be posted so they’re in chronological order with the moons, unless they’re flashbacks or something, so if that gets majority votes I’m not going to vanish for a few months or anything while I teach myself comic format.
