Her slumber is fitful. Violent, transient. She keeps slipping in and out of the same nightmare, and it becomes difficult to distinguish the lines between dream and reality. The blonde woman from the crime scene photo has Mello’s face and is laying in Mello’s place. Her blood oozes over the finely-made sheets as Near tries in vain to stitch shut all forty-seven of her stab wounds. In the logic of her dream it seems that if she fixes up the surface, the rest will be just fine. For every cut she closes, though, another opens. Her fingers are slippery. Red. Mello stares down at her with an expression of disgust and disappointment. Near has let her down. Near has let her die.
