Episode 43: Return to Vasselheim
I thought you were interested in Keyleth. Am I wrong? I mean, you’re interested in Keyleth, right? I mean, I know you don’t wanna tell me. I know you don’t tell me anything like this, but is it kind of weird that he’s here? No, he’s fine. And I am. Okay, that’s what I thought. Should I, should I take him out? No, no. ‘Cause I can. No. Destroy him.

my roommate’s cat has now settled in my arms while i’m trying to type and it is adorably inconvenient. anyway, what up y’all ?? my name is mj, which definitely stands for bad mamma jamma, and this here’s cass, which prob doesn’t stand for … idk, caring accumulates sassy squashes. there’s some ... i can’t even say they’re little, there’s a lot of detailed ditties about her under the cut ( my dudes, this is what happens when i’m allowed time off during my winter break ), and a more conscise bio for her on the explore tab. i’m still constructing cass’ wanted connections, but if you’d like to plot, either send!! me a mssg or like!! this here and i’ll come to you ✌
HAILEE STEINFELD / SHE&HER ⌇ CASS WILHAND is the newest human applicant to the match-made project. they identify as a CISFEMALE and PANSEXUAL and are NINETEEN years old. their references describe them as LOYAL, DETERMINED and SENSITIVE, OVERPROTECTIVE. supposedly, they joined because HER BEST FRIEND SINCE CHILDHOOD DIDN’T WANT TO GO INTO IT ALONE. they have been paired with the superhuman JAKE RUTHERFORD.
her family name was founded in villainy, thanks to her great-grandfather who stumbled into his powers right as the first world war was kicking up. while the rest of his friends went off to fight in the war, he, local Bitter(tm) teen, decided to use his newfound mastery of suggestion to take control of their small town. his friends came back, rounded up a team to defeat him, and yadda yadda henry wilhand went down in history as a great villain of Nowhere, Kansas, encouraging a legacy of ne’er-do-wells in his family line that spread across the country, causing mischief wherever they went whether they inherited henry’s superpowered inclinations or not
notable exception to this rule was his youngest son, frank, who came out of the whole mess born very normal and very embarrassed of his father. after henry’s death, frank stayed in their small town while his siblings left and put together his own little clinic, making his way from family to family on his house calls while he tried to build a reputation for the wilhand name that wasn’t entirely terrible. the town eventually came to trust him, if no others of his name, and he settled down with a nice girl who always paid him with a flower and a smile for his visits and they eventually had a daughter who had another — and from that extensive family background explanation came cassandra, or cass
**salesman voice** but wait!! there’s more!!!
cass’ mother grace was head-over-heels for cass’ father — and very ready for a change from frank’s stalwart goal of upmost morality without room for error. she wanted to live her life, to take risks, to not have to be the perfect woman her father wanted her to be. the man grace fell in love with was very much not perfect, a son of a normal crime family out in boston who was to busy trying to build their own reputation to care for a growing girl. grace had to choose between herself and her daughter — and she packed up her bags, released custody of cass over to frank, moved to the eastern seaboard, and chose herself.
so tl;dr of that whole drama — cass was raised by her grandfather, a doctor in a small town who’d spent his entire life trying to reinvent the wilhand name to represent goodness after his father and siblings had made it one of villainy,
and now i’mma actually talk about cass herself
so about cass!!
she grew up toddling along at her grandfather’s knee after her grandmother passed and her parents kicked it outta town, and so accompanied him on a lot of his house calls and learned more about first aid when she was four than she knew about the alphabet
there was a decent amount of family pressure to turn out as the best good person she could be, esp after what went down with her mom, but luckily her grandfather learned how to handle encouraging it better and cass turned out determined to prove any ideas that she’d turn out like her mom and ancestors wrong.
but there are also some positive influences tucked in there (not entirely motivated by spite, but.......y’know, it’s an aspect), and cass really does want to do her grandfather proud and follow in his footsteps — very closely following, she’s a pre-med student newly transferred to the university of chicago
at some point when she was still pretty young (i’m imagining 7-10 year old range here) she discovered her grade’s meanest boy hidden in their herb garden, all broken up and bloodied. she and her grandfather fixed him up and helped him out for a while, and eventually she and that boy became the very best of friends, always there at the back of the other to lend a helping hand or a good right hook when the need arises
it was this loyalty that inspired cass to sign up for the match-made project. when her best friend was encouraged to join but didn’t want to go in alone, she followed beside him as always and signed her name next to his. stalwartedness mixed with a degree of apathy — none of cass’ goals had ever been tied to a loveborn marriage, and she figured the tax break could never hurt. besides, she’d never gotten to really explore out of her hometown and it was already in the cards for her to go off somewhere for her degree. it was all just good timing.
nevermind that, since joining in a split-second, impulse decision of we’ve gone through so little of life’s big hurdles apart, we aren’t about to start now, cass has become scared shitless of the possibilities of the program — the general risks involved with being with anyone superpowered, the growing reminders that signing yourself up to be married to a stranger is not something to be considered lightly, being possibly paired with a villain who’ll lead her astray down the same path as her mother
— but she’s gonna try to handle her nerves and just focus on following the path to righteousness she’s planned for herself, being there for her best friend, and maybe trying to make this strange new partnership work if she can
