horrifying table in my gaelic lesson today. not actually very hard once you sit down and look over the patterns. but the table itself? horrifying. can't be dealing with this this early in the morning (8pm)

oh it's just that it's 10x easier to type thésé áccénts on my laptop and (at least in modern SG orthography) all the accents go the same way so i'm not destroying any information by doing it wrong lol. also disclaimed in the op's tags: my grammar is probably quite bad here

The Dental Rule (exceptions to lenition!)
When a word that causes lenition ends in a dental consonant (D, N, T or L) and the word being lenited starts with D, T or S, lenition does not occur.
Examples:
Feminine nouns with the article
An deoch, not a' dheoch
An tè , not a' thè
An sgian, not a' shgian
Feminine nouns with an adjective
Sgian-dubh OR sgian dhubh*
Fuil dearg OR fuil dhearg*
The adjective "seann" (old)
Seann duine, not seann dhuine
Seann tidsear, not seann thidsear
Seann saoghal, not seann shaogal
The negative particle "chan"
Cha tusa, not chan thusa
Cha sinne, not chan shinne
Cha tig, not chan thig
Exceptions to the exceptions:
For many speakers, the Dental Rule is starting to drop out for nouns with adjectives and compound nouns. As a result, you might encounter "fuil dearg" OR "fuil dhearg"; neither is incorrect. Sometimes this can lead to a contrast between established and spontaneously formed phrases, such as "sgian-dubh" (the ornamental "black knife" worn with a kilt) versus "sgian dhubh" (any knife that is black).
For "chan", the exceptions to lenition are primarily D and T. Verbs starting with S are still lenited (but the pronouns sibh and sinn are not!).
As always, there are dialects that do not have this rule.

and for the record my gaelic self study book is going well so far! i'm trying to be quite strict about focusing my revision and not getting ahead of the timetable (ie this is "week two" so i have to actually spend ALL WEEK on it before i'm allowed to proceed), and so far that's stopped me from doing the "quick flurry of work followed by nothing for two months" thing. but i am also kind of antsy and impatient about it, and right now that's manifesting as me frequently thinking "okay... but what if i went to the library and got two or three more "[language] in twelve weeks" books... and did all of them at once... what? it's not cheating. i wouldn't be skipping ahead 🤭🤭🤭"

my current level of gaelic is like. nonsensical. i can barely remember enough vocab or sentence structure to say more than "the dog is brown" without looking something up, but my knowledge of grammar and phonology is good enough that whenever i look for online resources i spot errors in them. one minute i'm like "ha! did you seriously just confuse -ard and -aird, mr youtube man? rookie mistake, how do you have literally any subscribers 🧐" and then next i'm like "ummm. h-how do you say. "chair""
