Not to sound pretentious or anything, but I'm shocked there are people whose hearts don't tremble when they read an exquisite poem, when they don't feel like they saw a face of god after reading an amazing novel, when they watch a movie so good they don't want to change their entire life based on it; people that don't feel art in their entire hearts.

We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, “O me! O life!… of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish…what good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here—that life exists, and identity, that the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. Good afternoon, the academic culture of “if you’re not overworking, you don’t deserve success” is unhealthy.

the aesthetic of dark academia in and of itself is not necessarily toxic. the acting on and taking it as a lifestyle is toxic. dark academia is a nice aesthetic when its only an aesthetic and not being embodied into an oppressive, exclusive, and/or pressure-filled environment.
