Can you imagine what Koby’s parents go through? One day their 14-year-old bookworm-ish son sets off on a fishing daytrip and disappears, only to reappear two years later when he is hand-selected by Vice Admiral Garp, Hero of the Marines, to be taken to Marine HQ in the Grand Line and over the course of the next two years rises from chore boy to rear admiral while gaining a reputation as a hero for protecting civilians during an incident involving one of the most terrifying pirates of the current age.

Ok, so, until recently, I had no idea Garp was such a hated character in the One Piece fandom. I have seen some posts bad-mouthing him, calling his actions iindefensible, and generally shitting on him. To this I say: wtf? I’m only on break at work and can’t write a thorough response at the moment, but I want to make a post defending the one character I think is one of the most important characters in the series from a literary standpoint.
First and foremost, Garp stands alone as one of the few (if the only at all) character placed in a position where he has to choose between his most tightly-held values. He is a hero of the marines who has to protect innocent people from criminals. He was Roger’s rival, and he’s one of the few marines that makes civilians feel legitimately safe in a, let’s face it, utterly crapsack world. On the other hand, the boy he’s raised and protected for 20 years is sentenced for execution for no moral reason. But if Garp had stood against the government then, what kind of fallout (besides having to fight Sengoku, with unknowable results) would have resulted? No other time has Oda placed a character in such a dead end, damned-if-you-do situation. His choice was this: save his grandson or preserve what little stability and peace of mind the world had?
Garp loves his family. That is apparent throughout the whole story. Comically abusive parenthood aside, he refused to arrest Luffy, he visited Ace in Impel Down, and Sengoku had to personally restrain him during the war. Whether or not Ace was Roger’s son, Garp loved him and you can see his turmoil throughout the entire arc. He retires immediately afterward, goes back to Fuschia, and takes the punishment Dadan deals out. Remember, Dadan attacked Garp, and Garp didn’t even try to defend himself because he agreed with her accusations.
There’s more but I don’t have time and I’d have to go back and dig through the chapters. The short of it is, I don’t believe Garp deserves this hate. If you had to press me for a reason, I would say I think this kind of vitriol is the fandom reacting to Ace’s death, which is totally unfair to Garp and completely bizarre. Why not hate Akainu, who not only murdered Ace, but attempted to kill Marines who were trying to save their own lives? Why not hate Luffy, who if not for him being there that moment, Ace wouldn’t have had to protect him? Why not hate Whitebeard for not acting faster, intercepting the transport ship? Why not blame Ace himself because if it weren’t for his goddamned pride none of this would have happened in the first place?

Hey Santa! I like them all, but if I have to pick a top 5, it’d look like this: !!Brook!!, Robin, Usopp, Franky, and Jinbe.

I think one of the best things about One Piece is how many minor characters stick out even among the main characters. Are you talking about a specific character? I’ve been thinking a lot about Commander Ripper from Shells Town lately.

Computer Writes Fanfic For Me Part 5/Infinity
"The next time you tell me that you are fine," Deuce warned Ace, "I am going to say, 'You need to take this fucking drug.'" The drug they were taking, of course, was cocaine. *** Cocaine use was just as popular in the 1980s, with the most notorious drug in the history of the planet in the hands of the gangsters. But cocaine use was by no means a new phenomenon. It had been around for a hundred years before its first documented use in a book by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. The British were addicted to cocaine before the U.S., but they were not alone in their addiction. The Greeks and Romans were into cocaine.

Computer Writes Fanfic For Me Part 4/Infinity
Deuce decided that when he wrote about Garp, he would make sure everyone knew  it was not a negative story. And he wrote it. I didn't have a lot of input at all. The first draft was two pages long. The second draft, I had a rough idea of how long. I'd written about four drafts. We were very excited about the possibility of a TV show, but I also knew if we were going to go forward with the book it had to be a good book.

Computer Writes Fanfic For Me Part 3/Infinity
“I like you,” Ace confessed to Marco.” You know I do” ”The two boys shared a look,” and then” ”Ace” said, ”"I mean you like me." ”Marco felt himself get angry,” but then” ”He heard his name called out. ”"T-Thank you,” Marco said, ”before turning and leaving. "”I'm going to go back to sleep,” he told himself. ”And I'm going to keep this to myself.”

Computer Writes Fanfic For Me Part 2/Infinity
"The next time you tell me that you are fine," Deuce warned Ace, "I am going to let you know the truth. If you have to die, I am going to kill you and make it look like a suicide. I don't care." Annie and Deuce were now standing on a platform. The platform was covered with a canvas curtain and was being draped with a tarpaulin. The curtain parted to reveal a small balcony with a long table in the middle. On the table was a small round table set with a small round coffee table and a small chair. On the chair was a large table that was covered with a tarpaulin and covered with several sheets of paper.

Computer Writes Fanfic For Me Part 1/Infinity
Masked Deuce looked over at his captain, Fire Fist Ace, longingly, wishing he would become his partner. "Yeah!" Fire Fist Ace cheered, "I'm all over that!" "You're not!" "I'm not!" "So you're not?" "I'm not!" "Then who are you?" "I am a Super Deuce!" "What does that mean?" "That's what everyone else here is like too! I have a lot more control over my power, but you can do more stuff as well." The masked Deuce nodded, "That's what everyone else here thinks too, right?"

I have finally solved the problem that comes with writing fanfiction: the writing part. Now, instead of writing the fic and being forced to finish it or let it wither and rot in its incompletion, I will have a computer write it for me!
I’m using this site, https://talktotransformer.com/, which was made by Adam King based on OpenAI’s language model. (I think I got that right?) It’s quite amazing and when it’s not blowing your mind it’s downright hilarious. Examples to follow.
