Lily is absolutely flirting in Snape’s Worst Memory - but I think this is one scene that has dated the series and is easily overlooked if the reader is not a Brit of a certain age. Lily and James are bantering in that scene in the way that Beatrice and Benedick do in Much Ado About Nothing or the way that Elizabeth and Darcy have crazy sexual tension while she’s telling him that she hates him and that he’s the last person on earth she’d ever marry.
People don’t see it now because James’ approach has so many red flags that are widely acknowledged as red flags in 2024 that they see Lily’s responses as genuine disgust and dislike, instead of her getting drawn into his game because she’s interested. But it was obvious in 2003 what JKR was going for here. The implication is that Snape lashes out at her *because* he sees her half smile and her flirtatiousness in this moment, and properly realises for the first time that his ‘best friend’ is totally into the guy tormenting him in front of half the school.
None of this is to say that Lily wasn’t a) completely right to terminate the friendship and b) wasn’t overall a very decent person. But she’s supposed to be a pretty shit friend here - put any one of the trio in Lily’s shoes and imagine their response to the same situation and it becomes clear that her half assed, rather impersonal defence was indeed intended to be half assed. Now of course this is directed by JKR needing to keep the connection between Snape and Lily secret until the very end, but she makes this work retrospectively from a characterisation perspective in the Prince’s Tale by depicting a Snape who is difficult to be friends with and who doesn’t recognise what true friendship *should* be because he’s never had it, and a humanised (not a saint) Lily who’s been quietly realigning herself away from her difficult friend for a very long time without making it crystal clear to him what she’s doing. It doesn’t make her bad, it makes her a very normal 15 year old pretty, popular girl with all the positive traits that entails (confidence, vivaciousness, fearlessness) as well as the negative (thoughtlessness, a lack of empathy towards those less socially adept).
Thank you for your message, anon.
I understand where you’re coming from, and while some people interpret the scene as flirting or as "laying the groundwork for their eventual romance," especially when viewed through the lens of classical literature and 'enemies to lovers' tropes, I see it differently. For me, attraction doesn’t automatically equal flirting. I do recognize subtle cues in Lily’s behavior that suggest she might be physically attracted to James, and yes, there’s some tension, but I wouldn’t categorize that as flirting. To me, flirting is intentional—a deliberate way to say, "Hey, I’m interested in you; let’s date.” That’s not what’s happening here. While Lily may have had some attraction to James, her intention certainly wasn’t to express that to him, particularly because his bullying and arrogance were significant turn-offs. This is consistent with the fact that she only began dating James in their seventh year when he supposedly "deflated" his ego and stopped bullying others. She valued the growth she saw in him, which made him someone she could consider dating at that point. (Whether he genuinely matured is another discussion, but I won’t delve into that here.)
I don’t deny that Lily’s conflicting feelings toward James might have influenced her defense of Snape to some extent, but to call her defense completely “half-assed" because she was supposedly “flirting” with James seems like a stretch. (Honestly, I’m considering posting the whole scene because it feels like people may have forgotten what actually happened or have only skimmed it.)
From an external perspective, Lily’s defense might appear somewhat weak or insufficient, especially given the severity of the situation. However, it's crucial to understand that this perception does not fully capture the complexity of Lily’s internal experience. Lily’s primary goal was to stop the bullying by publicly insulting and embarrassing James. She’s clearly trying to de-escalate the situation by first shouting at them, and when that doesn’t work, she takes out her wand, ready to escalate things if necessary. While it may not have been the most forceful defense, it was still a defense, and it clearly demonstrated her disapproval of their behavior. Initially, it even seemed effective, as James did perform the countercurse to the full body-bind curse. However, after Snape called Lily a Mudblood, she left, and James and Sirius resumed bullying him.
From an internal perspective, in my view, the primary factor influencing Lily’s defense was the state of her deteriorating friendship with Snape. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts and reblogs, their friendship was strained, and she likely had conflicting feelings about him. As you pointed out, she was gradually distancing herself from him due to his behavior. After years of standing by Snape, excusing his actions, and pretending everything was fine, Lily likely felt frustrated and betrayed. She was torn between her past loyalty to him and her current disapproval, making it challenging for her to respond more forcefully. While I do wish she’d done more (and she certainly could have), her feelings are understandable given everything that had transpired between them.
Regarding the notion that Snape noticed any "flirting," I respectfully disagree. Snape didn’t lash out at Lily because he saw her "flirting" with James or noticed any subtle expression. His focus was on defending himself from Sirius and James. Additionally, he wouldn’t have seen her expression since his robes were hanging over his head while he was suspended upside down:
"James whirled about; a second flash of light later, Snape was hanging upside down in the air, his robes falling over his head to reveal skinny, pallid legs and a pair of graying underpants."
The more likely reason for his outburst was that he felt humiliated and emasculated by James, especially when James said, "Lucky Evans was here Snivellus —,” as he let Snape down. That likely exacerbated Snape’s embarrassment, leading him to lash out with, "I don’t need help from a filthy little Mudblood like her." It seems like he was trying to regain some dignity, and the slur slipped out in a moment of anger and shame.
All in all, you’re right—Lily isn’t a saint; no one is. And while I’m not eager to compliment JKR the TERF, I do think she did a good job of humanizing her characters. Lily isn’t as fleshed out compared to other minor characters like James, and I do wish we’d seen more of her flaws. That said, her response to the situation, while somewhat imperfect, reflects the complexities of her character, which makes her more relatable and human.
While we may not completely agree, I appreciate your interpretation and opinion, anon. Thank you for sharing your perspective. 💫
*As a side note, I want to clarify that I’m not trying to excuse Lily for not defending Snape more effectively; I’m simply trying to view the situation from her perspective, as I do with other characters when analyzing them. Additionally, I want to emphasize that I’m not hating on Snape. Some people have taken my posts and reblogs about Lily as an excuse to criticize Snape, but that’s not my intention at all. I clearly identify as a "Snape defender" in my bio. Just because I’m exploring Lily’s perspective in SWM doesn’t mean I don’t also understand Snape’s situation. I have other posts dedicated to him on my blog.

So I find myself obsessing over this background character from Wreck-It Ralph. lol
His design is kinda like a mix of Sonic and Donkey Kong. I really want to know more about him and the game he comes from!
And if they include a WIR world in a future Kingdom Hearts game, I really hope this little monkey dude shows up as an npc in Game Central Station!

The significance of absence in storytelling
When does the absence of a supporting character take over a narrative? Or at least impact it massively?
Two clear examples from my fave fandom, the Morseverse:
Susan’s absence in Endeavour (we never see her barring the one imaginary sequence in the pilot) is so much more powerful and consequential than Susan Fallon’s appearance and subsequent death in Inspector Morse, even though the latter is played by the incomparable Joanna David
Val Lewis in Inspector Morse gets perhaps 90 seconds screen time, and as the wife of the sidekick, has zero impact beyond establishing her existence along with that of his family. Val Lewis’ headstone in Lewis gets perhaps 60 seconds on screen altogether, but her loss shapes so many undercurrents throughout that show
What do you feel? Look forward to more examples.

The Facts Time
Why are Mudbloods being exterminated?
The most common reason: the overflow of hell. The island doesn't need any extra creatures that will only get in the way.But the second reason is that these creatures claim can be reborn.
What?
Yes, these pitiful creatures claim to have a chance at redemption , despite the fact that His Majesty Lucifer himself personally declared that Mudbloods cannot leave hell!
The extermination is also carried out due to the fact that some creatures dare to illegally enter the mortal world.
We remind you, dear readers, that these creatures are mistakes, born of pitiful sinners. His Majesty will not allow them to disturb the peace of the mortal world.
The government's request: If you, dear travelers, sinners and demons, see these Mudbloods,Please report them to the local security authorities! You will be rewarded for your cooperation with the investigator.Any false information will lead you to punishment.

So Aziraphale is in Heaven, Crowley is unspecified. The humans from S1 have vague fuzzies, Most of the humans from S2 have the same. But we know that Nina at least and possibly Maggie as well (not convinced one way or another on Maggie's humanity) have at least some more distinct memories of the situations they experienced. I'm basing that on Nina being aware of the party behavior of the shopkeepers. The control doesn't seem as strong with her.
Anyway, if Nina (& Maggie?) have more distinct memories of what went down, I'm wondering about their current existential crisis. Every story I've read so far seems to gloss over their acceptance of the situation with their personalities, but I'm guessing they wouldn't be the first humans (by a long shot) that our beings have revealed themselves to and left aware (at least in part) of their true natures and what that would mean for humanity. Confirmation of a Christian eternity, but oh wait, heaven's not great and hell is exactly as described. So eternal torment is a certainty in one form or another. Not to mention, bringing another element to the predestination vs. free will debate we already see in Aziraphale and Crowley.
It would be interesting to see a theological debate or simply a discourse on how (if it were real and as depicted in GO) that particular brand of knowledge would affect a living human, or two. I've seen a few where Nina does freak out but I'm curious that if neither Aziraphale or Crowley is there to answer any questions, what would that mental tornado look like? If Maggie does remember more clearly, like I believe Nina does, what would that do to their relationship? There are obviously multiple scenario possibilities. I've just not seen that being explored. Possibly because Aziraphale and Crowley are already written to be so human like that we are still playing with that, but there are some really interesting deep dives to be done with some other characters.
This just came to me, but the possibility of Mr. Brown (an admittedly very apt name) finding out he has a pash on an actual angel. And then a later reveal of Crowley's true nature. His reactions would be well worth the read.
If these fics are out there and I'm just not aware of them, please please comment fic recs!

Scales of A Hide
My version of the ask made AU with @writeroffanfiction involving Kafka marrying the mom he saved in chapter/episode 2. Matsumoto hasn't given official names for her or her daughter so I call them Futaba and Ami. Futaba's kaiju form here will also be different too.
It had been a few days since the Spider Honju had attacked Futaba and her daughter Ami. The mother was currently getting materials to sew a plushie based off of their very savior on that faithful night. Mr. Kaiju as her dear Ami called him since they never really got his name.
In fact, he left a lot of questions in Futaba's mind. What was he? A kaiju that could disguise himself as a human or the reverse? Did something make him like this? A flood of thoughts that plagued the woman for days.
However what broke Futaba from these thoughts this time hadn't been her daughter. It was an unfamiliar touch on her hand. Something smooth, scaly, and very inhuman to her growing horror.
The mother's eyes would meet two bulbous ones belonging to a small gold worm kaiju with a feline face. "I'm sorry." Was the only thing it's distorted feminine voice said before it lunged. And Ami would find her mother convulsing on the floor before shifting into a kaiju herself.
Similar to Kafka, Futaba fell victim to her own larval kaiju with her daughter witnessing the transformation. Her kaiju is a mix between Komadoros and Spikanor from Spectrobes. A dark gold bipedal lion dog like kaiju around 12'7 ft in height with an androgynous build.
Two long curved frontal horns crowned her head, crimson red mane that fades into a soft forest green at the end, powerful thick long arms bearing large clawed hands, canine like snout which held massive fangs, and spiral fur covered tail equipped with a large spike ball at the end.
Like Kafka, Futaba's heart had become a core alongside having her biology in human form changed. Akin to Kaiju Parents, she has a flame sac to breath fire and her mane is fireproof/cold proof. The flame sac is present in her human form too.
Something she didn't know until she sneezed and accidentally shot out fire. Good thing Futaba had been in a bathroom stall at the time. Her powerful muscles grant the kaiju mama physical strength greater than even the most powerful large kaiju despite having an 8.3 fortitude.
Futaba obviously freaks out as she is now a kaiju. It doesn't last long since Ami snaps her out of it. Unlike with Kafka, nobody knew about her because the transformation happens in the duo's temporary home. The two decide to look for Mr. Mister Kaiju in hopes that he has answers to what's going on.
It takes at least three days to find Kafka as luck would have his crew cleanup the Spider Honju from the other night. Our himbo didn't expect to see Futaba and Ami again, nevermind learning the mother had also become a kaiju like him. The two decide to help each other control these new forms.
I mean there's only so much Reno and Ami can do as they're still human. Between the two, Futaba has better control over her transformation but not the power aspect. Kafka is the opposite so they both work on each other's weaknesses.
It unexpectedly leads to a whirlwind romance in human terms as they begin to bond. Both their respective kaiju also found each other compatible thus it took only five months for Futaba to become Mrs. Hibino(in kaiju terms). Especially with Ami's approval from how fast she bonds with Kafka.
The little girl obviously took advantage of having two kaiju shifters for parents. Snuggling against warm fur/scales, unique piggyback rides, and giggling whenever either start to purr. Ami helped both shifters feel more comfortable with their inhuman sides through these moments.
While Kafka joins the Defense Force, Futaba keeps the peace in the city under the guise of Behemoth. She prefers her civilian life even if she has to now chase off kaiju on her way to work sometimes. It doesn't take long for the DF or the civilian populace to learn about this new kaiju.
Nor did it take long for them to realize Behemoth and No. 8 are mates. Kafka takes advantage of his kaiju form to visit/provide for his new family. A rookie YouTuber didn't expect their livestream nature walk to catch the two most infamous kaiju on screen.
No.8 offering a fresh kill to his larger mate as she takes it gleefully. Behemoth lovingly nuzzles him back before the two leave to their speculated nest. The Defense Force are just relieved the YouTuber didn't try to follow them and instead left the area quickly but quietly.
Finding the duo's nest became a big priority for the DF as any offspring of a daikaiju was bound to be powerful. Even moreso when an unfortunate drone pilot caught very familiar vocalizations. (It was Kafka's and Futaba's honeymoon at the time.)
The Defense Force are now desperate to find the kaiju pair's nest before someone else does. Parental kaiju are the most dangerous if their offspring are in danger. No one wants to deal with an enraged kaiju fueled by paternal rage. Much less ones like Kaiju No. 8 and Behemoth.
If I do go with the offspring route, here's how it goes. Kafka and Futaba have at least 6 possible whelps that will be hybrids between both their kaiju forms. Obviously Ami wants to see her future siblings as again she doesn't care about them being kaiju. Plus she's already excited about becoming a big sister!
Though Kafka and Futaba have to compromise about it since a nest full of eggs is more likely to be attacked than an empty one. It takes a while to convince their daughter to not go looking for the nest. At least until the whelps are about to hatch as the clutch will be moved to Futaba's house by that time.
No. 10 will attack their nest either way but Reno's actions in the battle are different if it's this path. He'll move the clutch to safety and set a defensive perimeter until Kafka retrieves them. Soshiro gets suspicious about the newest recruit's absence which leads to an impromptu interrogation.
Our himbo and Futaba will have a few months of peace after the base attack before the DF comes knocking in both paths as well. How things go down are the only difference. You can bet a super delicate approach is required when they find Ami playing with her kaiju siblings.
No one wants the little girl to throw hands and risk pissing off her kaiju parents.
