ᴅɪғғᴇʀᴇɴᴄᴇ ɪɴ ᴅʏɴᴀᴍɪᴄ // mediator challenge
Juuzou wouldn’t notice, consciously, a change in his own mental state, in his responses to things. Certainly, he wouldn’t notice a return of his innocence, whatever that means at its core. He had never been self-aware enough, but he was affected by this, oh, even if he didn’t know it.
His smile even seemed more genuine as he approached his CCG colleague, hands clasped behind his back and jacket free of weapons, before it melted into a look of curiosity and interest, and a surprising lack of mockery and malice.
It was as if the very nature of the rules by which Juuzou abided (and those around him reacted to) had shifted. Two steps to the left, and then one back. Everything was more or less as it should be, one could count gravity and conservation of energy just as they should be, but there was something a little off about him.
Not necessarily negatively, and not something overtly apparent, not surface-wise. Juuzou is as he does, after all, is precisely the sort of thing he’s been made into but... perhaps he has not always had to be. Regardless, he approaches his old colleague with a curious expression.

“Amon-san! I had a question. Why did you join the CCG?”

“... Incoming?” Juuzou blinked owlishly as he turned to face the sound of the approaching individual. Well, approaching was not the most suitable word, but falling didn’t normally come into play, much less come to mind.
Tumblr media
His eyes widened a tad as he stepped neatly to the side, glad that his reflexes were enough to prepare for this sort of thing, even if it happened a little oddly. Rushing over to where the stranger had fallen, he stared, still wide-eyed. “Where’d you fall from?”

Tumblr media
“Oh crap– hey, careful down there! Incomin’ an’ all that!”        That was all the warning the person below her got as she was forced to dismiss her Grace a few feet higher than she’d intended, not realizing how close she’d cut it to her allotted time. Hopefully, the person below would move– if not, a collision with both Amrita and the nearby bushes was in their very near future.

Juuzou adjusted the weight of the bag in his hand before turning to look at her, slight surprise on his face as she mentioned just how many books she had written. Ten was a lot... right? He didn’t know the average number for authors, but it sounded like a lot. He could barely write up his reports without taking twice as long as he’d been told he should.
“Some of the people I work with read a lot, and I’ve heard them talking about your books sometimes, but I didn’t know there were so many,” he said, then paused, seeming to consider something momentarily. “Do you... do you like writing, or is it something you do because you’re good at it?” he asked. Another pause. “Or both?”
She seemed irritated and disappointed at the lack of her laptop. Juuzou frowned a bit, wishing he hadn’t brought it up. It wasn’t that he had meant to remind her of what she didn’t have, of course, but... well, it happens. Right? Right.
Anyway, her next words drew his attention. A book about ghouls? Well, he’d seen a few of those in stores, ghouls capturing the public’s imagination in ways he frankly didn’t understand.
The books were always pretty inaccurate, or so he’d gathered from listening to the complaints of those who read a lot more frequently than he did.
Tumblr media
Doing his best impression of Amon, the sternest, least-fun individual Juuzou knew, he attempted a serious expression. “Ghouls aren’t a fun topic, you know.”
She smiled as that cashier gave them a funny look. They must look quite the pair – they were both petite, and he was only a few centimeters taller than she. They probably looked like a couple of high school students, each with an aggressive sweet tooth. How quaint.
She nodded in thanks as he handed her own bag, no trouble as it was far smaller than his.
“I have, I’ve published almost ten now – though, I have a few that I never finished or had published,” She paused, nodding, as if she understood exactly where he was coming from.
Nodding again, the author let out an annoyed sigh; she didn’t need another reminder that she’d lost just about everything. Her apartment, her things, her clothes, and worst of all her laptop with all the research and manuscripts it held.
“I wish I had kept my laptop, at least, that’s where I had everything…” Even though her research and notes were all over the place, the best of it were transferred to her computer to use while writing. Now, to not have it, was almost like starting from scratch.
Oh, so he was interested in that? Well, with a smile forming on her lips, she’d have no problem telling him.
Tumblr media
“I can, I suppose, though it’s certainly going to be tough here… Well – I was going to write a novel about ghouls.”

“Hm? Steady... heart?” he asked, cocking his head to the side. He hadn’t heard of such a thing, but it sounded nice. In its own way. “Yeah, I stitched myself. I already know how to sew, after all. It’s easy to fix yourself if you don’t scream over things like bruises and gut wounds. As long as it can be fixed,” he admitted, banging the side of his prosthetic leg. “Or you can fight your responsibilities head on. That’s better than trying to go around them, right? I wouldn’t know. I don’t have anything I want, much less want to get away from.”
Tumblr media
“A steady hand, a steady heart,” he stated, mostly to see how the other man would react to the sentiment. A smile crept into his expression, morbidly curious with Juuzou’s equally morbid description. “It wasn’t so bad, hmm? And you stitched yourself?” He had brushes with death plenty, but usually healed rather quickly. Loki bit the inside of his lip. “Making the best of it. Right…” Awfully pragmatic, and somewhat defeating.

“Not... morally right?” he asked, genuinely not having considered such a thing before. But oh, now that he thought about it, he saw the truth in that. To control someone in any way would be morally wrong, is morally wrong, or at least it looked to be that way. His Mama had controlled him with conditioning and fear, after all, even if she had to exert a lot of effort to do so, and what was that if not wrong? “All right. You’re right,” he agreed easily.
But then he was up the wall, too busy enjoying the height to contemplate morality any further-- and he’d done enough of that for the day. Shinohara-san would be proud, he thought, just of the contemplation, but maybe even of Juuzou’s conclusions as well, of Juuzou considering right and wrong as opposed to fun and likely to result in pain.
“I like the challenge, yeah,” he said, nodding and standing up on the edge of the high wall, looking down. He balanced rather precariously, as if a gust of wind could push him over the edge. “And I’m good at climbing. The closer I am to the sky, the freer it feels.”
That probably wasn’t entirely true, because who could tell freedom from captivity anyway, without a basis of comparison? But it was the feeling that mattered.
Tumblr media
“Hmm... a cat, that’s bigger than humans? We have a few of those, actually. Lions, tigers, panthers, jaguars I think, but they might be a little smaller. Wanna see which we can find?” he asked, excitement bubbling up as he stepped casually off the edge of the wall, dropping a few feet before catching himself on the edge, enough to slow his fall, so he could safely fall the last few feet without injury, other than a few scrapes on his hands.
“Yes. In theory, cantus could be used to control people physically and mentally. However, there is a great risk of harming them if not used carefully, and such a use of my powers is not morally right.” That seemed obvious, yet Juuzou spoke as if it was in question. The reason was apparent to Satoru as well. His upbringing had only taught him a disregard for morals. Thus Satoru felt his words were enough as he had put them. What was simple mad the greatest sense. No need to complicate the truth, when the boy was already being exposed to a new world of obligated kindness and respect.
Tumblr media
Speaking of him, where had he gone? Satoru stopped and looked until he spotted Juuzou just as the scaled the wall. “You were welcome to climb behind me, but I supposed that is why you are more physically fit then I am. Do you enjoy the challenge?” The question was half posed at himself. Could he take pleasure in achieving something not in spite of its difficulty, but because of it? Maybe he should restrict his cantus next time. Just to test himself. Though he still did not understand the appeal.
“I don’t know, all of the animals I know in my time have new names. Is there a creature similar to the one I described to you, the impure cats? They are larger then humans, so it seems unlikely.” The creature he was thinking of was not a panther, but certainly close enough that Satoru would have been surprised to see that humans of the past managed to contain it. To his knowledge, they could not even manage to contain themselves sometimes.

Juuzou grins, handing over the cake. “It’s vanilla, but the icing is chocolate. I usually like it the other way around, but the bakery was out. These are good enough.”
Tumblr media
A pause, then he goes on. “And I didn’t even spit in it or anything.”
He’ll give the other male a once over, a very suspicious once over, but, when nothing happens and it appears there aren’t flies circling the treats, holds out a hand.
“Cupcake me, man.”

Juuzou grinned, wide and almost sharklike (or like some predator or another, one must suppose it doesn’t have to be a shark). He considered showing the other his knives, not as sharp as his Jason but sharp enough, then decided against it. He didn’t want to spook the ghoul, just jog his memory a bit.
He was curious, so curious. This wouldn’t be the first time he’d met someone from his own world whose future he knew, even if they didn’t. He didn’t really understand it, but the scientists could take people from out of time, not just from other worlds... well, oh well.
Regardless, his memory seemed to have been jogged without the aid of any knives-in-hands, or whatever it is that jogs the memory. Juuzou thinks it’s knives-in- but he could be wrong. Maybe that was just Mama’s way.
Tumblr media
He grinned, clapping his hands together. “You remembered! Yep, that was me. You didn’t have much cash on you, but even so, now’s a good time to return it, isn’t it? I don’t know when I’ll get a chance like this again. Someone from where I’m from. Doesn’t happen often. I wish it was someone I really knew, not just some ghoul,” he added, emphasising that last word, directly confirming that he knew exactly what the other was, “but that’s better than nothing, isn’t it?”
Lone eye fixating on the abnormally pale man as he paid heed towards his eccentric actions. THere was no doubt in Kaneki’s mind that he was being played with, sparking his immediate defense by completely clamming up. Undoubtedly, he knew what he was–and if he hadn’t, he sure was convincing in his mannerisms.
Whilst he didn’t seem to be particularly malevolent in nature, he could tell that the man carried weaponry. Though he didn’t wish to engage in combat, feet shifted upon the ground, readying himself for the opportunity to either dash away or physically defend himself.
Then suddenly, a small breakthrough came in the form of a flashback. Had they met once in Tokyo? In the evening, when he was mid-route… a pale figure, facial features hidden, but the same erratic behavior.
   ❛ Y-you…! ❜
Tumblr media
❛ Tokyo. There was a white shadow, an unknown boy close to my age.      My wallet… that night, my information was stolen.      …and he spoke in a playful tone of voice…      Much like you. ❜

ᴀᴛ ᴀɴʏ ᴍᴏᴍᴇɴᴛ // mediator challenge
A familiar face caught Juuzou’s eye upon one of his normal walks around the city. During his time here, the course of several months, he had learnt quite a bit about the area, but he still found himself lost from time to time. This city was bigger than even Tokyo, and nobody can learn a place like that completely in mere months or even years. Regardless, the lack of familiarity about this particular city block he’d found himself on was off-set by the familiarity of the friend he’d made here.
The young investigator grinned as he approached, hands clasped behind his back as he took a few steps closer, matching his stride with Satoru’s. He looks at the man, grinning, big and bright and real, the way smiles in his life have always been real.
Tumblr media
“Hey. Where’re you going?” he asked, deciding at last to speak up. “You look down, is something the matter?”

ɪᴛ's ɴᴏᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀsᴛ ʀᴇᴀᴄᴛɪᴏɴ // mediator challenge
It had been some time since Juuzou had seen Kazuya, the King of Bel and other such titles. Juuzou didn’t get titles, but he got ranks well enough and as such, he could pretend to make sense of a title. And he’d signed a contract with this guy, after all, and did feel some loyalty there. It was hard not to-- Juuzou was like an aggressive dog, dangerous to anyone who goes after him or his,but loyal despite everything. Kazuya had been dependable, and sometimes that’s enough.
Of course, Juuzou didn’t know how to express loyalty, not really. Never had to worry about it before. He made an somewhat-graceful sort of leap forward that was one part eagerness and one part stumbling over a large crack in the sidewalk and keeping himself from falling.
Tumblr media
      “I got you something.”

for juuzou’s mediator challenge, he must be a beacon of joy, of helpfulness, a delight to be around for once in his (quite literally, sorry to say) miserable life.
regaining his innocence will be an odd experience for him-- but if anyone wishes to interact with him during this time, especially characters with traumatic/painful backstories, give this a like?
i’ll cap it at 2 but people juuzou has interacted with before can ignore the cap.

Mission objective: how often have you been ordered around like a dog? Subjected to the evils of this world, 'tis a shame how innocence can be tainted. For once, we ask that you bask in your innocence. Beam brightly, be a joy to someone. Aid people, for there are others who've been transfixed by the horrors they've been exposed to. Make Big Madame writhe in her grave. TIME LIMIT: 72 hours from date of publish and the challenge style is ‘drabble’ or ‘thread.’ Good luck!

Commission of Counter Ghoul, originally a federal agency in Tokyo that served as a criminal investigative body concerned with ghouls, now extends their protection over the streets of Hive City. Since ghouls are not the only threat present, Hive City’s CCG dedicates their work to the protection of civilians from potential harm, through investigation and incapacitation of rogue beings who are beyond human. These include paranormal and supernatural beings, out-of this-world creatures, or just individuals who abuse their scientist-granted abilities.
We are now accepting new recruits. Both humans and nonhumans alike are welcome to join the ranks of the doves.

Juuzou throws another cupcake wrapper, grinning. “Wanted to get your attention,” he responded, then let out a whoop of wild laughter.
Tumblr media
“Want one?” he asked, pulling an actual cupcake from the box in his other hand. “I won’t throw it--- if you don’t catch it, that’s a waste of good cake.”
Why would you do that and not even bring cupcakes???? Badou stops long enough to get hit upside the head by this thing and also stare at the other teen.
“The hell was that for, idiot.” At least he’s calm about it. Not the first time he’s been through trash….

“Did you know– there’s a lot of light pollution here! It’s hard to even see stars! I haven’t seen any!”
Tumblr media
Juuzou’s odd exclamation was directed at a passing stranger. Though he had not met this person before, it seemed crucial that he impart this knowledge onto somebody, and that he wave his stitched-up arms around as he did so, as if it were a truly dramatic revelation.
