This picture is strange. It makes me nervous. Rarely do I come across a picture where I am confronted so forcefully with symbols of life and death. I mean, just look at this: the picture was taken in a hospital room, one of the saddest possible places; a space where germs and humans go to die. The players are a smiling family of four seemingly healthy women who frame the grimacing skeletal face of what I can only assume to be their father/husband whose presence haunts this photo like a spectre. As you move into the foreground, you notice the flames of the birthday cake leaking out from the top of the cake box and at the foot of the bed, a black bag covered in skulls and bones. This is some unsettling stuff.
I can only assume Death himself is the photographer.
