Caretaker being taken care of is one of my favorite tropes and shows don’t do it enough so when they actually do get it, I go insane!

So true Wei Wei, louder for the people in the back!!!
Not only did Duan Jiaxu only know Sang Zhi for only like a year or less when she was younger, he never watched her grow up, he always only treated her as a younger sister than and got genuinely concerned and told her that she's too young to date when she made up that older online boyfriend story.
He only started seeing her romantically when she's freaking grown up!

The sheer smug adorableness that ensues as he realizes she was jealous and his little grins and the sneaky-obvious way he puts his arm around the back of her seat heeeeee.
Also when he realizes that he is her crush omg!
This show is a set of puppies cavorting, in drama form, but the miracle is I enjoy it.
I love that once he found out she thought that girl was his girlfriend he quickly and efficiently cleared it up. AWWW
I still can’t believe I am adoring a puppy fluffest but here I am.

Besides, didn’t I promise you before? If I have a girlfriend, I’ll introduce her to you first. But I remember there was one girl before. I came to Yihe when I was in high school. You came to the airport with that girl.

The way he is so odd and straightforward at once! But also the way she backtracks on her no interest (which she said out of pride) ahahaha they both feel so real and so young!

The way he tries to barrel through appendicitis is insane but what struck me is that he’s so used to taking care of others and he fights her trying to care back but ultimately when she pushes he crumples about it and gets taken care of for once and it’s so satisfying!
I mean, he keeps freaking out about her getting home safely as he’s being wheeled into operating room.
And he keeps doing it after the surgery too but I love that she stays because, as she tells him, if there was nobody by her side in this situation, he’d stay.
He is so taken aback in a good way and it’s so satisfying to see someone fuss (nicely) over him because he’s so not used to it.

what strikes me about Lighter and Princess is that Zhang Jingyi and Chen Feiyu are both young actors without a ton of experience, but they're very effective at what they do, especially for the standards of an idol romance drama
and i do think it matters that the creators decided to cast two promising movie actors
because they have the freshness of newcomers, but they also have cinematic qualities to their acting: they have strong line delivery, and they understand shot framing and how to emote onscreen, and they obsess over details, and they inhabit their characters’ worlds, and they’re used to a filming environment where you play around with multiple takes so they’re not afraid to improv and change things up! there’s also a surprising realism to their acting, because even though idol romances have cartoonish plot points, these two never resorted to cartoonish acting.
another thing is that movie actors tend not to rely so much on filters, so the filters in this drama are honestly pretty mild. you can actually see when an unshed tear wells up in the corner of someone’s eye (compared to other dramas where the actors might be bawling their eyes out and you’re still not sure if you can see tears)
& without getting into specific rumours, there's a strong possibility that both have been in relationships before. i do think it's beneficial when actors have real life experiences, and it's a problem for cdramas if romantic stories are being told almost exclusively by idols who aren't allowed to actually experience romance.

Lighter & Princess is killing me and everyone who's not watching it is missing out on the only slice of life drama that ever made me feel this way. I can't explain what way. But tears are a huge part of that feeling. Story, development, characters, chemistry... I didn't even check out this drama for sth in particular. But I would never have thought it would be such a quality drama that would basically kill me.
PS.: I don't make many text posts and the fact that I do speaks volumes already.
