seriously tho, literally all y’all want argue against vegans like “OH you care about animals more than people what about the exploited workers that pick your crops!”
but like?
1) that’s assuming that non-vegans eat ZERO crops at all which simply isn’t true, especially considering most crops grown in the US go to feeding livestock
2) what about the workers that are exploited in slaughter houses and the meat industry?
Seems like you only care about people if they give you a convenient and weak argument against a diet you don’t like because it offends your tastebuds or something.

Anyways it’s a shame modern day ecology is moving more towards urban systems and studying how humans interact with the environment. It is very important to study this but it interferes with my goal of being a hermit scientist who runs around in the forest catching frogs and interacts with a total of five (5) humans a year

A plea to restore populations of some of the world’s most dangerous animals has been made by scientists who claim the loss of large carnivores is damaging ecosystems.
More than three-quarters of the 31 species of large land predators, such as lions and wolves, are in decline, according to a new study. Of these, 17 species are now restricted to less than half the territory they once occupied.
Large carnivores have already been exterminated in many developed regions, including western Europe and eastern United States - and the same pattern of “carnivore cleansing” is being repeated throughout the world, said scientists.
Yet evidence suggests carnivores play a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems which cannot be replaced by humans hunting the animals they normally prey on…

Whenever I speak affectionately on why I love and am so enchanted by lichen, I mention how fascinating it is that it’s a composite organism, something you hesitate to call a single species because it is actually made up of several species from different kingdoms.
Today in one of the Facebook groups I’m a part of, someone shared the work of a biologist, Dr. Scott Gilbert, who has written about how the idea of the “biological individual” is a myth which overly simplifies research on not only evolutionary biology but also immunology, anatomy, physiology, etc. In his 2012 paper “The Symbiotic View of Life: We Have Never Been Individuals,” he aims to show that “animals cannot be considered individuals by anatomical, or physiological criteria, because a diversity of symbionts are both present and functional in completing metabolic pathways and serving other physiological functions. Similarly, these new studies have shown that animal development is incomplete without symbionts.”
Maybe this isn’t as mind-blowing to people who are more involved with animal-focused research, but as someone with a botanical/mycological background I am very much enjoying thinking about this and its implications. I, like lichen, am not a single species but a collection of organisms symbiotically existing as part of the same whole. I am not an individual but rather an ecosystem.

I started birdwatching because this girl I like is really into birds and I was trying to win her over, and I succeeded but also now I’m legitimately into birdwatching and I keep getting distracted from my work by the need to run outside and look for cool birds. Watch out for the dangerous side effects of lesbianism, fellow wlw.
