A shelf reminiscent of this Craftsman Bungalow circled our living and dining room. I would run my right hand along its surface, feeling for a tiny, hard, smooth object. My mother’s front tooth “fell” out one day, and this is where she put that 42 year old piece of enamel. It was perched atop that shelf for a long time.

When she died suddenly, I carefully ran my fingers along the shelf, feeling for that tooth. It was almost 44 years old by then, and I felt worse for almost forgetting it was up there.

That shelf held mom’s tooth for safe keeping. All I remember is that I took it, and packed it with my things when my sisters and I had to move back to Texas.
