A small oil painting that I started in the very beginning of the class. The left photo is the first sitting, which I completed in an hour. The photo to the right is my finished painting, which was another hour’s work of getting the shadows and reflections right as well as a bit more detail to the trees. I tried not to go into too much detail in the landscape. Oil on linen/board. 24x33cm.

Third sitting with my large oil painting. I have worked more on the foilage. The dead tree on the right looks very black in the photograph but is actually a rather cold, dark brown. Also the top of the photographs looks pink, but it is white mist.

I returned to the woods to complete these two small paintings.
Top one, oil on canvas, 24x19cm. Today, in this painting, I focused on seeing the foilage in shapes and trying to paint those shapes onto the surface. There is a very strong light today in the spring leaves of the beech trees.
The bottom one, oil on canvas, 20x20cm. In this painting I focused on the strong light hitting the moss on top of the rock in the front of the painting. I also altered the background adding the faraway hills and woods that I could see there.

Work in progress. Have started a new larger painting, oil on linen 80x100cm. I prefer the larger formats because when the canvas is small I feel very limited. This is in the forest, an early morning when the mist clouds the longer views. I have done two sittings with this painting. Top photo is my second sitting and bottom photo is my first. Still have to work more and add more foilage.

Sketches in charcoal. The first one of the sun coming down the hill and reflecting the water. The second of a branch hanging over the wavy, windy water. Trying to see the values in the water. Very difficult. 38x46cm.

A larger, but quick sketch in charcoal. 38x46cm.
And then a smaller oil painting, with the same motif, that I painted in one go. Oil on canvas, 24x19cm. I tried to catch the crisp sunlight through the spring beech tree leaves.

Returned to the spot in the woods so that I could rework on this painting. 31x41cm, oil on paper. More shadows to the oaktree to the left and its roots.

Work in progress. On both paintings I reworked the colour and values of where the moon light hits the ground. Have also started to rework the drawing of the table and chairs on the painting at the bottom, only the directions of the surfaces and legs, by measuring properly. I will have to wait for the next full moon to get all the values right.

Work in progress. Fourth sitting with this large panting. I have painted a lighter blue tone on the sky and worked more with shadows and highlights, as well as painted in more of the wind in the pinetrees.
