NOBODY’S FOOL
Chapter #32: Well Armed
Word Count: 1350 Read Time: Approx. 10 mins
[Penn’s POV]
“Ah! Here we go!” Sam’s smile was bright as he opened his arms wide, spotting the waitress returning to our room. She held before her a dish with a tall silver cloche on top, concealing whatever was inside. More food? I groaned internally, I’d completely lost my appetite. “Come here…”
Before I could protest or run out of his reach, Sam was picking me up by the front of my shirt, lifting me directly out of my chair. I bit the inside of my mouth as he did this, determined not to make a sound that might come across as weak or frightened. “What’re you doing??” Eveline’s voice was panicked.

Chapter #31: Table Manners
Word Count: 2288 Read Time: Approx. 18 mins
[Penn’s POV]
Beyond the three imposing figures taking up the majority of my point of view, Travis sat next to the larger of the two wealthy men, Riley next to him, Dani at the opposing head of the table and Eveline perched between her and Sam, seemingly miles away from where I stood. If any of the three men nearest me reached out to crush my skull between their fingers, I doubted any of my friends would be able to intervene in time. I felt very little and very vulnerable all of a sudden.

Chapter #30: Table’s all Set
Word Count: 1271 Read Time: Approx. 10 mins
[Penn’s POV]
We ran through sound check. The venue was stunning, the acoustics perfect. It was incredible to me how much had changed in such a short amount of time. I had learned so much about the gear, how to get the settings just right, all from Travis. I’d said it before and it bore repeating: Thank god for Travis. He had been such an incredible support to me these last few weeks. He felt like a brother to me. It was amazing that after a few months of this life, I could say that wholeheartedly about a bear of a human being. I loved that someone so muscular, imposing, and intimidating in stature could be so sensitive and gentle with someone like me.
We played and while the music rang in all our ears, I didn’t have to push myself to crack a smile. I loved making music. I shuddered to think what I would do without it. As the final strum of one of my new songs buzzed in the air, we heard applause. It sounded like three or four people from a distance away in the audience. We all exchanged glances with each other wondering if any of us had an idea of who they were. Our collective stares of confusion confirmed that all four of us were blindsided.

Chapter #29: Pick-me-up
Word Count: 944 Read Time: Approx. 7 mins
[Eveline’s POV]
I sat in my hotel room, the streets of Chicago many flights below me, bustling with life. It had been a month since Sam had made his surprise visit in Los Angeles. We had traversed the better part of the country in that time. Penn and the band were gaining a true following. This should have been the best time of his life. Of all our lives.
Instead, here we were. Distant. Barely speaking. I hadn’t had the heavenly sensation of his body curled up, warm and soft in the palm of my hand for almost four weeks. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked about myself. Every show, every autograph signing, every interview…. I’d captured him in graphite, or pen and ink or watercolor. I couldn’t help myself. It was like a compulsion. I had hundreds of drawings, some no more than sketches, but all depicting a moment of beauty, talent and wonder of this past month’s journey.

As I approached the van, my heart leapt to my throat. My hands shook and my brow furrowed. I cast my mind back to the last time I’d seen Penn, the look of betrayal, pain and rage flickering like forks of a flame behind his eyes.
The early morning sun was cold and unkind, the light brilliantly bright without the accompanying warmth. I shivered as I crossed the parking lot. My head spun, stomach tied in knots as I thought about the rest of my night after I left him burning and broken.

The heat in my body started to rise as the drink seeped into my muscles and bones. My head was abuzz as I lost feeling in my ears. Then it came to me. Like a whisper on this California breeze. [Penn’s POV]
I soon found myself at a, to quote everyone’s favorite new interloper, “shitty hole in the wall” bar with a large outdoor patio. The weather was beautiful, I wished she was here. We sat outside, at a picnic table squeezed into the far corner, private, a quiet place for us, mainly me, to lick our wounds. Travis had the smart idea of placing me on the inner iron railing of the fence, so that I could sit eye level with everyone.
Travis had settled in to my immediate left, his shoulder so close I could grab the fabric of his shirt without having to lean too far. He pressed his back against the same fence. Dani was in her element, getting us drinks and becoming the self-appointed mother of the group. Riley sat on the opposite corner of the table to my right, joint in hand, leg bouncing up and down as he puffed smoke into the warm, breezy night air.

Chapter #24: Left Alone
Word Count: 942 Read Time: Approx. 8 mins
[Penn’s POV]
She was extra gentle, her fingers soft as ever, as she carried me out of the room. I tried my best to look presentable and not as though I had been weeping out the contents of my shattered soul. Feverishly, I wiped the tears from my eyes and swept my hair back. Luckily, my size came to my advantage in this department, as most humans rarely looked at the details of a pet’s face for long, our features were too small to focus on easily.
To my great relief, my bandmates were gathered in the green room along with him. To my even greater satisfaction, I could instantly tell that the band did not like him. There was this palpable tension as my three friends lounged on the green room furniture, taking ownership of this space, while the outsider leaned against a pillar a safe and unfamiliar distance away. Sam’s face looked drawn, sour, almost disgusted by the company he kept, until Eveline (and I) appeared in his periphery.

[Penn’s POV]
I knew as soon as the hand of the human gripping the doorknob came into view, this was not one of my bandmates. The hand was masculine, hard. Veins protruding from the top and snaking along the arm. There was hair on the wrist but not so much to be considered hairy. The hand wore an impressive gold and silver watch, ticking out the seconds that seemed to each last a lifetime. The arm connected to a dress shirt, lavender, sleeves rolled up, collar unbuttoned. The dress shirt ended in a head, a trim dirty blonde beard, small blue eyes, a pencil straight nose and dirty blonde hair that was slicked back. As this unknown male entered the room, I couldn’t help feeling my hackles raise like some territorial animal.

Chapter #22: Cyrano
Word Count: 1285 Read Time: Approx. 10 mins
[Penn’s POV]
The evening leading up to the show was gone in the blink of an eye. Someone had recognized me at dinner and I found myself posing for photos again. Before I knew it, it was time for the show. I had managed during the sound check, to find a few minutes when Eveline was off running an errand for the band, to give the other three a heads up about my new song. We rehearsed the bones of it once or twice and all felt pretty comfortable. But I made sure not to reveal the lyrics, I wanted that to be a surprise.
As we waited in darkness, ready to begin, I shifted my weight between my two feet, black leather boots practically blending in to the table top I stood on. Tonight, I wore black jeans, a white undershirt and the bandana I’d gotten from the previous show, around my neck. Complete with suspenders and my white hat. I looked head to toe like the silly little lovesick cowpoke I was slowly becoming.

Chapter #21: End of the Panzy Waltz
Word Count: 1730 Read Time: Approx. 13 mins
[Penn’s POV]
I must’ve fallen asleep in the car ride to the hotel, because I found myself being woken by the bright fluorescent lights of the lobby stinging my eyes. We rode the elevator to our room and Dani was nowhere to be found. She must’ve done pretty well with that guy at the bar, then. Good for her. Eveline placed me on the dresser, staring at me glassy eyed and exhausted. She was clearly sobering up a bit though, as her speech was more clear, “Hey, Penn. I’m sorry I got… got a little drunk. I didn’t scare you did I? I shouldn’t get so out of control like that…. I could have dropped you…”

Chapter #20: Sinking Ship
Word Count: 2,150 Read Time: Approx. 17 mins
[Eveline’s POV]
We returned to a triumphant dressing room, Travis was perched on the vanity counter, Riley sat in the swivel chair, Dani lounged on the upholstered chair in the corner. As was no surprise to anyone, they had drinks ready to toast as they shouted songs of praise for the tiny man held in my palm. He shouted right back in turn, raising his flask. Pinching it between my thumb and forefinger, I helped pull his guitar over his head (knocking his hat off into his lap in the process) and placed it on the vanity counter. We clinked glasses, tiny flask included, and drank. Everyone uttered their congratulations to Penn, and he was over the moon.
The night slid into a haze of cheers and congratulations from the other two bands. We quickly found ourselves at an absolutely gorgeous bar downtown, lights shimmering like rainbow off of the grand chandelier. The venue had our first round covered and had called ahead about the unique little visitor, so he was welcomed with open arms. He was delighted, chest puffed out. He’d been told he was less than nothing his whole life, and now he was the center of attention.

Chapter #19: Genesis
Word Count: 2,150 Read Time: Approx. 17 mins
[Penn’s POV]
Before I could make my lips move to form a response, she was walking forward, the other three splitting off to take their places. Eveline tipped her hand and I slid easily onto the surface of my playing space. She knelt in front of me, smoothing my suit jacket of any wrinkles, and pinching my tie between her nails to straighten it up. She looked me right in the eye and kissed the tip of her finger before placing it over my heart. I knew exactly what to do, cupping her fingertip in my hand, and squeezing. Words were not necessary.
I watched her recede into the black and blue shadows of the wings, to my left. Travis was over my left shoulder, pulling his guitar over his head, Dani was over the right and Riley sat at his kit, sticks in hand, level with me but further right of center. Good. I could see them all with an easy turn of my head. Someone had arranged for a small wooden stool, just like the one I’d played on top of at the bar, but scaled to me to be placed right next to my guitar. On top of it were my flask, mug (filled with water now) and bandana. I quickly grabbed the flask and took a swig, trying to calm my shaky legs. I swung the guitar over my head and stepped up to the mic.

Chapter #18: Waiting in the Wings
Word Count: 2,356 Read Time: Approx. 18 mins
[Penn’s POV]
As a pet I was never exactly encouraged to develop passions in life. But standing up here on this stage, I knew as surely as the blood pumping in my veins that music was my passion. I’d never felt more free than now. I was having the time of my life and it was nothing more than a rehearsal. The throngs of crew and staff members who couldn’t help but pause in their work to listen to me made my spine stack a bit straighter. Seeing is believing, after all, isn’t it?? We got through the set. And I wiped the sweat from my brow, placing my guitar back on its stand.
Soon, I found myself surrounded by the three other bandmates, as Eveline made her way backstage. Everyone was happy with how it went, feeling energized. They were kind enough to be highly complimentary of me. Just then, Eveline came in to view, crouching down at my level. “Hey you…” she smiled.

NOBODY’S FOOL
Chapter #17: Larger than Life
Word Count: 1,467 Read Time: Approx. 11 mins
[Penn’s POV]
I opened my eyes to find myself standing on the floor of the bare stage, about a foot or so from the edge. The ground beneath my feet was so shiny and black, that I could actually see myself reflected in a perfect reversal. Slowly, I lifted my head and the air was sucked from my lungs. The room was HUGE! Mind bendingly huge.
I’ve since heard humans express a similar sentiment when visiting impossibly massive monuments like the Grand Canyon: the landscape yawning before you is so much bigger than your brain is able to comprehend that you feel as though you’re staring at a flat background instead of a truly three dimensional space.
I was so overtaken by this sea of seats, the twinkle of the house lights, the vast silence of this empty temple to music, that my legs gave way and I fell back, crashing to the floor. Everyone was amused by this reaction.

NOBODY’S FOOL
Chapter #16: First Time
Word Count: 1,780 Read Time: Approx. 13 mins
[Penn’s POV]
The next morning I awoke to the strong, earthy smell of coffee. Opening my eyes, I found that I was not in the hotel room, but lying awkwardly on a pile of Eveline’s stuff, inside her purse. The bag was balanced on her lap and based on the ambient sounds of chatter, the clinking of ceramic and glassware and the smell of coffee, bacon and eggs, I realized we must be in the lobby for breakfast. My stomach growled loudly, I was starving. It was audible enough that Eveline looked down at me, smiling as soon as she met my half-lidded, sleepy eyes.
She lowered a finger down and played with my hair, even messier than usual, and caressed my cheek. “Good morning, little man. You slept well….” I chuckled sheepishly, sorry, Eveline! “You hungry?? It sure sounds like it…” I nodded emphatically, sitting up with one arm propped behind me. She handed me a piece of bacon and I went to town, unceremoniously shoving it in my mouth. Someone far above and away from me caught her attention. I couldn’t quite make out what they said, but heard her response easily enough, “Hmm? Yeah, he just woke up. Poor little boy. Dani will tell you, I could not get him up this morning, he was limp like the dead! It was hilarious!” She looked back down to me, offering me a piece of pastry. “Sorry, little man, it was pretty funny…” I shrugged. She was feeding me right now and I didn’t care much about anything else.
