Part of me wonders if this was done to be symbolic. Obviously he’s stunned here, being thrown across a roof into a pane of glass and nearly falling off a building will do that to you, but the way he lays there looking down at the city, half-on half-off the roof almost seems symbolic in a way. Especially since he was so depressed throughout Vendetta and we know he’s been suicidal in the past. This was probably the moment when he thought “how much longer can we keep going on like this” ‘cause he realized that was almost it for him right there.

Near: Magazine serialization vs. Manga release

Death Note experienced minor visual changes when being printed for manga release, but of all the changes made Near is arguably the most noticeable. The existing scans of the original serialization are fan-translated—meaning his original attitude could be a choice the translators made, rather than the original Japanese text being different between serialization and manga (although, I do not have the original Japanese scans, so I cannot say for sure.)

Regardless, these are the most prominent and noteworthy panels showcasing this change. All the other panels featuring Near are either the same or only slightly changed, making this sudden transition from serious demeanor to almost mocking-like when he talks to Light quite jarring and sudden.

In the serialization, his speech combined with his general expressions give off a more childish and playful feeling, if not somewhat malicious and mocking. It’s possible that one of the original character ideas for L—a happy-go-lucky and cheerful child—was used as inspiration for Near’s original character. However, that’s just my speculation.

Near’s original attitude would probably either come off as cute and funny or incredibly annoying depending on who you asked. Considering these modifications made during the manga release, I would say the general consensus leaned more towards the latter. Personally, though, I like his serialization character a lot, ahah.
