It was Stanley who brought the silly stuffed octopus. "Look," he laughed, "he looks just like you! Outside, he always has a frowning, serious face and narrowed eyes. But inside he's smilie and softie, just like you!"

N should have left the toy in the office. Forget it somewhere on a shelf. Or give it to the secretary.

But... it was kind of a gift.

He was so rarely given gifts, and N still could not let the toy octopus out of his hands. Apparently, Mr. Rider was right, N is really too soft inside.

Okay, apparently it was always supposed to be a paired hurt/comfort picture.

I must say that before the events of AU, the Narrator never remained alone. Inside the "Parable" there have always been either Stanley and Mariella, or technicians, or programmers and designers. Birds always heard other people, and later occasionally chatted with them.
