We’ve launched the Communities closed beta, which means many of you will get to play with it soon!

If you don’t want your blog to be searchable on Tumblr, we now assume that you also don’t want your posts to be recommended to other Tumblr users.

🌟 New

Don’t want search engines to crawl your blog, but still want your posts to appear in Tumblr search and in-blog search? We’ve now split the existing setting for excluding your blog from search into two, letting you choose to hide posts from external search engines, Tumblr search, or both! If you previously had this toggled on or off, your existing preference was copied to the new setting.

Speaking of search, we have increased the limit of indexed tags from 20 to 30. This only applies to new posts.

We now have an exciting Known Issues on Tumblr doc, please feel free to check it out.

🛠 Fixed

SMS text Two-factor Authentication codes were not arriving, and this is now fixed. For a more secure experience, we recommend using an authenticator app for your Two-Factor Authentication codes, and don’t forget to save your backup codes!

Some ads were stopping people from scrolling for a few seconds, this has been fixed.

With Bing’s policy change to no longer use content they index for their search engine for AI training unless opted in to, we are now allowing Bing to index posts from blogs that allow search indexing. We continue to discourage Bing’s crawling for AI training.

If you’re using Avast, it’s currently incorrectly blocking the ability to use messaging in real time on the web. We’re working to clear this up with them.

By popular demand, we have a new support doc on how Tumblr recommends content.

Tumblr Patio has launched to all Ad-Free Browsing subscribers.

The new option to “View previous reblog” in a posts’ meatball menu is now out to all iOS users.

We’ve released a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.

As the team focuses more on making Tumblr a better experience overall, Changes will now only post once a week.

🛠 Fixed

Trending tags stopped updating on February 22, and was fixed the following week.

Refreshing an Activity column in Tumblr Patio now properly changes Unread items to Read.

If a note is deleted from a post, it’s now properly removed from Activity too.

We’re continuing to roll out the option to “View previous reblog” via posts’ meatball menu to iOS users.

Some activity items on Android have an updated look.

🛠 Fixed

Fixed an issue with the ALT text indicator in the post editor on web, which would open the lightbox instead of displaying the description. It now correctly opens the image description.

We’ve removed the prompt to gift Ad-Free to another person if you were already subscribed to Ad-Free yourself.

Fixed an issue on Android where colored text was underlined in the editor.

Also on Android, the anonymous avatar will now display correctly in Activity, when relevant, in languages other than English.

On iOS, fixed an issue where sometimes blog avatars would appear blank in the feed.

Also on iOS, fixed an issue where you could begin customization of someone else’s blog.

🌟 New

We’re starting to roll out the option to “View previous reblog” via posts’ meatball menu to iOS users. It’ll be available in version 33.2+ of the app.

In the post editor on the desktop version of the site, we’ve made the header of the editor stick to the top of the view, when the post gets really long. The floating avatar is now also moved into the header, to better match what the post will look like once published.

Also in the post editor on web, we’ve removed the option to make text yellow. In the future, we’re hoping to improve the contrast of colored text options to improve accessibility.

Also on web, when you’re searching a blog, you’ll now also see an option to search all of Tumblr.

🛠 Fixed

We’ve now put in some default placeholder text into polls and poll options where people have managed to figure out how to make them empty. Sorry to ruin the fun!

We’re aware of an issue in the iOS app that can cause the dashboard feed to zoom up or down when tapping on the TumblrMart icon in the header. We’re working to have a fix in the next version of the app!

We’ve added titles to several push notifications in the mobile apps. Previously the title was just “Tumblr.”

On search and tag pages, we’ll now show an overlay if a post contains one (or more) of your filtered tags. Previously a post with a filtered tag wouldn’t be shown at all.

🛠 Fixed

When sending a post on web, there’s now a carat icon next to your blog avatar to make it more obvious that you can click it to switch to send the post from one of your secondary blogs.

We fixed an issue that caused Windows 10 to display as “Windows 10 10” in your list of active sessions.

We’ve got some new default blog avatars! You’ll start seeing them on new blogs soon.

Based on your feedback, Tumblr Patio now features a blog picker in blog columns, allowing you to quickly switch through your blogs in a single column.

Fixed an issue on web that would incorrectly display subavatars on group blogs.

In our last changes post, we mention a redesigned Tumblr TV on Android, but oops, that wasn’t actually launched at the time. It's launched now! Here is a more accurate description of the redesign: Video playback in the lightbox/Tumblr TV has been improved on Android. There is now a play/pause button, as well as a few other visual changes.

Fixed some keyboard shortcut conflicts in Tumblr Patio. You can now use the up/down arrows to scroll through a column. And you can use shift+left/right to navigate between columns.

🌟 New

On web, we’ve added a “View blog” link in your blog’s account settings secondary menu on the right sidebar, which opens that blog as if someone else were viewing it.

On Android, we’ve redesigned Tumblr TV. The seek bar has been moved to the bottom section of the screen, the playhead position text no longer follows the seek bar thumb position, plus we added some neat appear/disappear animations on some UI elements.

🛠 Fixed

On web, the meatball menu item linking to a reblog’s parent post is now labelled a little more intelligently. If the parent post is another reblog, it’s still labelled “View previous reblog”—but if the parent post is the original post, it’s now labelled “View original post”.

On Android, we now show the full date and time on queued posts.

On iOS, we fixed a bug where tapping a push notification for a gift you received would take you to the wrong place. Now, tapping the notification will bring you to the gifts screen as expected.

Tumblr on the web was unavailable for a brief time, but it’s all fixed up now!

You can now use keyboard shortcuts in Tumblr Patio. Use your arrow keys to move between columns.

Based on your feedback, the default order for Tag and Search columns in Tumblr Patio has been set to Latest. You can change these to Top if desired by selecting Settings under the meatballs menu at the top-right of the column.

🛠 Fixed

Some users may have been unable to upload videos earlier today. This is now fixed.

The location of Active Sessions under your Account Settings on the web should now be more accurate.

Most of you should now be seeing the correct Ask/Submission inbox totals.

We’re looking into an issue affecting a very small percentage of users where the Ask/Submission inbox totals don’t appear, despite there being Asks and/or Submissions.

🌟 New

You can now add polls to reblogs!

When searching on a specific blog, using a # as a prefix will now only match tags. So if you search for #cats on a blog, we’ll only show posts using that tag. (This is also how searching across all of Tumblr works when using a # to prefix a search term.)

We’ve retired the Today tab in Explore on web, now Trending is the default experience again.

🛠 Fixed

Posting to Tumblr from IFTTT was being rate limited more than usual lately, causing some actions to fail, but we’ve fixed the issue.

We’re fixing lots of small visual issues with Tumblr Patio, for those who are helping us test it out.

On Android, a small number of users were unable to access their messages on app version 32.9. This issue is now fixed in 33.0.

We’ve rolled out the fix to issue in the iOS app that was preventing folks from editing draft posts.

🚧 Ongoing

We attempted to fix the pesky bug that could cause the asks/submissions inbox to show an unread count of 1 or more when nothing was actually in there. This is usually caused by someone sending an ask, and then being suspended for some reason, or blocking, which all prevent the actual ask from being seen. We accidentally made this worse for some people, showing an even higher unread count when nothing was there. While we fixed that botched attempt at a fix, we’re still working to make the situation better overall.

On web, we added “View previous reblog” to the post meatball menu. Find it by clicking the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of a post!

We also tidied up some of the other items in the post meatball menu on web, while we were there. The ordering of some items were adjusted, and “Subscribe to conversation” is now called “Follow post”.

On Android, “View previous reblog” is now in the meatball menu of reblogs for all users on the latest version of the app.

To comply with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), you can now mark a post as containing commercial content, which simply adds a “Commercial Content” banner to the post and does not affect your post’s visibility or ranking on Tumblr.

🛠 Fixed

Users can no longer send asks to blogs that have blocked them, or that they have blocked.

On web, the blog selector in the post editor would incorrectly appear on top of the text format bar. This is now fixed.

On web, the settings page for your blog (tumblr.com/settings/blog/blogname) used to show the account settings menu in the right-hand sidebar. We updated this area to show the blog sidebar instead (Posts, Drafts, Queue, etc).

We made some tweaks which should fix that specific problem where you see a non-zero unread count on your inbox, and so you click into your inbox only to find nothing there. Let us know if you continue to encounter that issue.

Tumblr Live will be shutting down on January 24th, 2024. Read more about it here.

Post+ is also being shut down. All subscriptions to Post+ blogs that were paid for on web have been canceled, and you’ll no longer be billed for them. If you have subscriptions to Post+ blogs that were paid for via an in-app purchase on Android or iOS, you’ll need to cancel them on your device (we’ve also emailed the people who were subscribed this way). All existing Post+ posts have been converted to private posts.

🛠 Fixed

The latest version of the iOS app, 32.8.1, has a fix for a bug that was preventing images from being rearranged when making a photoset.

Submissions in your inbox on web no longer display a duplicate avatar for the submitter.

Mentions in private group blogs’ posts will now send a push notification, like other mentions, but only if you’re a member of the private group blog.

You’ll no longer receive a push notification about your own reply on a group blog’s post that you’re a member of.
