i think the biggest example of neil's rigid worldview is his belief that retaliation for his actions will fall on him and only him. that's how his father operated, if you did something he would go after you, not your family or your friends, you. this is why neil says what he says to riko on kathy's show, he thinks riko will retaliate against him and he is prepared to deal with that. but that's not how the moriyamas work, and it takes neil a long time to understand that, even when he's told and shown repeatedly that they will punish the people around him for his actions. in his mind, they should be going after him whenever he mouths off, and it's bizarre that they don't.

you’d been perplexed when sylus had called you in the middle of the day—which was usually his favorite time to rest. 

“can you come to the base, sweetie?” he’d rasped, voice thick with ruined sleep. “i need your help with something.” 

your confusion is all the more reason for you to head to the base. when you arrive, you let yourself in and greet mephisto with a poke on the beak before hurrying to sylus’s bedroom.

“is something wrong?” you breathe, all but barging in. quickly, you scan the room for threats or intruders before your eyes land on the hulking figure in front of you. 

the hulking figure who’s uncharacteristically hunched over his bed, head bent and looking defeated. 

at your voice, he looks up, and you know him well enough to see the relief and slight embarrassment in his ruby eyes. 

“…sylus?” you ask hesitantly, “what’s going on? you should be sleeping right now.” 

“i was asleep,” he agrees with a slow nod. “and then…i ran into a slight problem,” he responds carefully, eyes flitting forlornly to the side of the bed.

curious, you come to stand beside him, placing a hand on his sagging shoulder. it takes a few seconds, but then, you spot it: trapped between the dark oak boards of his bedframe is a small brilliant red gem, glittering slightly in what little sunlight fills the room. 

“are you able to retrieve it?” he asks quietly. “it must have fallen earlier. when you’re not here…i can’t sleep without it.” 

“o…kay?” you reply, your confusion only doubling. taking a moment to study him, you notice the small pout on his face and stroke his slightly mussed hair. “of course i’ll get it. just a sec.” 

a moment later, you’re kneeling down to stick your hand in the bedframe and wiggling your fingers until you feel the crystal’s cool surface. you pull it out in one fluid motion, blow the dust off, and deposit it into sylus’s waiting hand. flashing you a tired, grateful smile, he immediately places it securely under his pillow. 

“there you go!” you chirp, pleased to have helped him. “but…can i ask something? why didn’t you just fish it out yourself?” 

avoiding your gaze, he clears his throat before he speaks.

“…my hands were too big.”

I'm not sure if you've done this before but could you do something like LADS men with a S/O who has depression? Like they barely care about their selves and just want to be in bed all day? Also I love your works!

He can tell that you aren't feeling all here, watching you carefully out of the corner of his eye. He doesn't ever want to force you to do things with him when you aren't feeling well but he also knows that just laying around all day doesn't really contribute to helping you feel better. He'll let you have a bit of time to yourself like that though, trying to make it a little easier for you to adjust to the day if you can do it on your own terms.

He'll make efforts to at least get you out of bed. A change of scenery can help out a ton, especially when he manages to convince you to come sit outside on the balcony. As awful as you feel you can't help but admit that being in the sunlight does feel a little bit better.

He understands that you might not really want to interact with him but he'll try to include you. He'll do things in your presence and keep to himself so you don't feel as alone. He'll occasionally reach over to stroke your hair or cup your face, reminding you of his presence.

Your days are quiet but he does insist on you getting up to do things with him on days where you feel better. He does everything he can to support you and treatment if you're doing or taking anything, your cheerleader on the sidelines as he helps you take care of yourself. He truly doesn't mind, knowing that he does these things because he loves you.

He doesn't know what to say. There are so many things that keep flitting across his mind as he tries to figure out what he can say to you. He knows that such an act is a result of extreme emotions and there's nothing he can do to change the fact that you've attempted.

He thanks you for feeling comfortable enough to tell him and willing to confide in him. He holds you against his chest, letting you tell him as little or as much as you need him to. He's worried that he'll say the wrong thing to you which is why he's being very mindful about what he says.

You reassure him that it's fine, that you know he means well and he doesn't need to think as much as you can tell he is. You can feel his care for you in everything he says and the way his hand feels. You're also glad he doesn't want to treat you like you're delicate, simply now just aware of your history and treating it as such.

He will take notes of your mood, just in case things get that bad again. He wants you to trust that you can always trust him with your thoughts and feelings. No matter what happens he's there for you, ready with open arms and kind words.

Andrew Minyard has a beautiful brain and is quite the comedian, as we can all read in the books ('is your learning curve a horizontal line?'). So I introduce to you the headcanon that during movie nights Andrew will whisper all kinds of commentary in Neil's ear, and Neil regularly dissolves in giggles or straight up laughter and everybody is so confused because the scene wasn't even that funny? Is Neil hearing voices? Stoic Andrew Minyard cannot possibly be that funny right? Neil just waves them off and tries to hold his laughter in. Andrew, btw, is very smug about the fact he can make Neil laugh like that.
