The UK’s ageing population are stuck in a double paradox: The pandemic has given them a delightful sample of what retirement could look like, while they enjoy the knowledge of increased life expectancy compared to their parents. So although financially fortunate, plenty cannot comfortably retire as planned thanks to the cost of living crisis and pension scandals. For some, the expectation of a longer life of 20 plus years without structure or purpose feels like a waste of productivity and extra income. This goes some way to explain why two-fifths of older people fill their time doing volunteering for charities and local communities! In any case this twin dilemma means it’s interesting times for the recruitment sector who have been riding the waves of the great retirement followed by the great return…. WONDERFUL STORY OF THE WEEK! Tracey W was working the Dippy Craft Fayre show in Bakewell Derbyshire this week. As usual she had her robotic cat with her to attract potential donors for PDSA. This cat will randomly mew, purr, roll over and generally act like the real McCoy. A woman and her 12 year old son drifted past her stand and the boy was particularly taken with the cat, stopping to stroke and watch it. After a minute, he turned to his mum and said simply 'Mum - Cat' - Now this doesn't seem like a such a big deal, except that this boy hadn't spoken for 6 years after experiencing a childhood trauma. The mother was completely overwhelmed and burst into tears on the spot, telling Tracey that he had been mute for years. Tracey was absolutely delighted to think that her cat had had such a special and spontaneous impact and that this sweet boy had met this milestone right in front of her. Tracey had purchased the electronic cat herself for work. It cost over £100 (otherwise she said she would have gladly given it). She often spends her own money on display toys like gerbils and hamsters because she knows it brings people over to the stand. She was able to share where she'd bought the cat with the mum which she hopes will continue to encourage the boy to keep talking. What an incredible story and the perfect example of how the fundraising role can change lives in a blink (in more ways than we think!) #charitylinkteam #motivation #heartwarming #story #fundraising #fundraisers
