First piece with #procreate5beta, for #criticalrole #pubdraw. Shared it a few nights ago on twitter and on my Instagram story but I've been playing with it more and trying to push values and stuff. https://www.instagram.com/p/B433doOD2o9/?igshid=15tq94938il6x

Some progress on this piece! Censored certain parts not 'cause they're NSFW but 'cause I don't wanna give away what this was inspired from just yet.

Still reeling from the book that wrecked my heart and soul. Definitely not a storyboarder. I just wanted to do a four panel illustration. Still in the rough stages but at least I got some motivation after weeks of not having ANY https://www.instagram.com/p/BwIwaEEhU79/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19xbdywy6p2k1

I've been wanting to draw some of my current favorite boys for a while, but 1/2 of my doodles are not doing the characters justice lol
If you can name all four and tell me either whose character they are or what work they came from, your prize is my love and admiration ♥️♥️♥️ college student in debt, yo LOL

I redid it ‘cause I wasn’t that happy with the first version. Made my head bigger and added the white outline. Also, made the red dot border smaller. Got something else planned for this but that won’t come to fruition for a couple more weeks 😆

I just gotta vent..
So this semester, a new professor was hired at my uni and while it seemed like a good thing before, it doesn’t feel like a good thing rn like ok the class is for introduction to 3D. i’ve talked to other friends and classmates that have taken the same course, either before or currently with a different professor, and our individual experiences of the class are fairly different. i’m hearing that people have rigged characters or have made environments in 3D by MIDTERMS, and making an environment is what my class is doing for the FINAL the prof literally has taught before, just at a different school, and i’m wondering why they don’t have a concrete lesson plan. like, literally, on the first day, they just kept going on and on about one program when we were supposed to be learning about another. AND NOW, they tacked on one additional FINAL to do and made what was supposed to be our final a separate final project. I MEAN I GUESS I CAN DO IT IF I DON’T SLEEP FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER. SURE, it’s not like I have several other projects to do before this semester is over, and it’s not like I have other responsibilities outside of school like work. I’m trying to squeeze in what little socialization I can ‘cause I’ll go crazy if all I do is study What makes this a little worse is that a few of my classmates are trying to milk it for what it’s worth. Like, the prof is a fairly prestigious person at a different, specialized uni, so they know a lot and my classmates are really trying to take advantage of it, which isn’t bad, but OMG they’re willing to write positive course evaluations just to keep them on faculty but if this is how it’s going to be, I’ll be brutally honest with my own course evaluation

FREAKING OUT ‘CAUSE THERE’S LESS THAN A DAY BEFORE 24HR STARTS AND THE ANXIETY IS REAL
So there’s this thing called 24 Hr. Animation Competition/Contest, and I’m participating this year as it’s my senior/final year as a student and I’ve only known about it since last year. I didn’t participate last year because I found out about it pretty late and hardly knew people on campus, on top of not being confident in my skills just yet. I’m just really anxious in case I let my team down by knocking out, and I also have other duties and responsibilities outside of the competition. OH also, I’ll be up for over 24 Hours, with a class at 9 AM getting up around 8, finishing around 4 on Saturday, that’s about… 31 hours of being conscious and continuously being productive or, at least, trying to be hahahaha

My Digital Illustration final! Prompt was to make an illustration, with a 3D element, with folklore in mind. Folklore being as wide as cultural folklore (i.e. ethnic stories) or subcultural folklore (i.e. superstition or varying beliefs regarding music, sports, etc.). Some of the other students also went with stories from their culture, religious or native belief in origin, or stories or figures from other cultures like succubi or alien abductions. I did mine based on the Philippine folktale of the origin of the pineapple. I’m not gonna tell the whole story but I’ll shorten it to: A child turns into a pineapple. Anyway, chose the color palette and designed the background myself, and got the pineapple 3d model off of Turbo Squid

Light in the Dark Pt 5 of 5

Light in the Dark, Oil on Panel
After the painting had dried for a week or so, I applied a coat of retouch varnish. Alkyd mediums can deaden the paint, causing the color to sink in. The varnish unifies the appearance and makes the painting look fresh.

I found Ryan Pancoast’s varnishing tutorial to be incredibly helpful. Instead of repeating what he has already covered so well, here is the video tutorial I followed.
youtube
Once the varnish was dry, the next challenge was to create an accurate and high resolution digital file of the completed painting. The specular surface of the finished piece prevents a scanner from being able to accurately capture the image, so I use a DSLR camera. Polarizing gels are placed on the lights and a linear polarizing filter on a 60 MM Macro lens effectively cut the glare. White balancing the camera is an important step to ensure color accuracy, requiring a gray card or white card. A DSLR camera will come with directions as to how to set the White Balance for the shot using that particular camera; I am using a Canon Rebel SL1. I placed the painting on the floor and, with the camera mounted on a tripod, shot directly down, capturing the image as a RAW image file.

The light housings are clamp on utility lights, which can be found at most hardware stores. The lights themselves are LED spotlights generating the equivelant of 250 Watts. LEDs are rather heavy, which makes mounting the clamp light housings difficult. I like that the LEDs do not get hot.The polarizing gels are expensive at $50 each and can be damaged if placed too close to a hot light.

Another angle on the camer/lifght set up
Ryan Pancoast’s tutorials were also helpful in approaching how to shoot the art. Here is another of his tutorials, this one on photographing art.
youtube
A couple of other useful resources include Dave Palumbo’s Muddy Colors Blog post and Robert Hunts recommendations.
Once an acceptable image was shot, I used Adobe Lightroom to upsize the image to 30″ on the long end and correct for any chromatic aberration from the lense, exporting a .tif formatted file. In Photoshop I perform any final color adjustments and use the Unsharp mask (usually set between 2.0 and 3.0) to refine the detail.

This has been sitting in my drafts for so long! Time to queue it up :3

Finally had the chance to go to the Avatar/Korra exhibit at Gallery Nucleus today! I don’t know how long I stayed there but I just loved looking at all of the work exhibited. I chose to miss the opening reception due to another event but I’m definitely not missing the closing reception! Here are just some of the work that I particularly favored. My snapchat story’s actually filled to almost 4 minutes with my favorites from the exhibition. P.S. Do any of these people have a tumblr blog ‘cause I’d love to follow them (I already follow bryankonietzko, michaeldantedimartino, and angelasongmueller)
