I'm angry a lot, but no one really believes me. Outwardly, I'm passive and accepting. I perform my gender and sexuality in ways that I believe would be palatable to others. I do this so that I feel safe. But right now, I'm applying to graduate schools and I'm challenging myself to start somewhere I can be out and open about who I am. What I didn't realize, was that my recommenders would be sent preferred name and pronouns without me checking that off first. I guess I can't blame them in some ways. But I do blame the recommender who told me you don't have to be a boy to be in science. I blame them because despite not even being out, my gender is being policed by those who are privy to my questioning. So fuck them. Fuck everyone who's made me feel like I have to be someone I'm not. I'm using he/they pronouns, and I'm using the name Charlie. Because that's what makes me feel like myself, and I deserve that.

It was almost a miracle, the sun that sat atop the horizon: golden and terrible and brighter than anything before. Perhaps to be touched by it's light was enough to breed a little kindness. Artie looked up at it all and at the others who had made it this far and wondered what exactly it meant to survive. Was it to breathe? Was it to stand atop the city and realize the whole world that had been kept at bay was ready to burst into view. Artie was a little afraid, but it was a comfortable fear. No, excitement? When he looked down at his hands, inspecting the scars and dust and grime, he marvelled at their trembling.
Is that you? He asked the spirit to no avail.
...
Thought I'd share a little writing I managed to do between the hell that has been my week :) I've been playing with a new idea. Enjoy!

Word find tag!
Tagged by @ashen-crest to find wash, dry, tumble, and air.
TWs for swearing, corpses, and cutting and bruising
Wash
“Jade,” a voice pleaded.
Derek was behind her, an arm guiding her back to the door.
“I almost lost you, there,” he said. “Come on, I wanted to talk more about that bad movie with you.”
“Right,” she said.
She allowed herself to fall deeper into his arm, letting the visions wash over her. She needed to see just what she was up against.
Then, Jade stepped out the door and accepted her fate.
Dry
He would have never met Amelia if he had just carried a Goddamned umbrella.
Back in New York, he would’ve kept one on him. But in Vegas, he got so used to the hot, dry nights that the summertime downpours always took him by surprise.
A hatchback had stopped at the side of the road during one of these cloudbursts, just as his suit jacket and shirt were starting to cling to his skin and his hair looked as though it had been painted to his head.
Tumble
“Throw him now,” she said.
There was that flash of orange again as the body flew through the air. Jade moved one of the stones out of the circle towards her, pulling hard, as though there was resistance.
There was a rumbling beneath them. Then, illuminated by the lights of the dam, a jet of water spouted vertically in the air, encircling and engulfing the body before it could fall further.
Jade moved another stone. A sharp rock was drawn up the water spout, cutting a gash where the bite marks on Derek’s neck had been. Other debris circled around, bumping and bruising his body as if he were tumbling around the river bed. Currents pulled at his limbs, and branches snagged his clothes.
She moved a final stone and the waterspout descended into the river, taking the body with it.
A low whistle echoed behind her. Jade whirled around, but it was only Caz, staring at where the waterspout had been.
“Jesus Christ, Shaw,” he breathed.
Air
The truck’s brakes squealed as the evening traffic in the city once again ground to a halt.
“Are you sure this thing will make it to the other side of the county?” Caz asked, tucking an arm behind his head. He laid in the back of the cab where sun visors had been placed over the windows and had his hat over his eyes.
“I thought you were trying to sleep,” Jade said.
“It’s hot,” he whined, crossing his legs and planting one foot on the ceiling. “Do you not have air-conditioning?”
“Look, it should be less than an hour even with traffic,” Jade said. She saw an opening in the left lane and gunned it.
“Fuck,” Caz said, falling to the floor.
Tagging, if you'd like, @leiwritess, @jess---writes, @emelkae, & @moononherwings to find chance, spring, reader & clean.
#ur writing and characterizations are just!#*chef kiss*#other people's awesome writing#thanks for the tag :)

‘whydunit’ instead of ‘whodunit’ 👀 Sign Me Up! As in tag list pls if that’s okay! Ahh, that description really got me hooked. Thanks for sharing!! Ah! Interested to see where the second wip takes you too!

genres: psychological thriller/ a ‘whydunit’?? instead of a ‘whodunit’
summary: how well do you know yourself? this was a question that constantly plagued teng yi’s mind. as he began remembering the missing bits and pieces of his lost memories before 12, he realised that the children’s home he came from was a darker place than he initially believe. paired with a sudden appearance of a woman claiming to be his friend from Camelot Home, thus begins teng yi’s urgent journey to uncover more truths–about the children’s home and its owner, and that woman’s dead body in his house. is his memories as reliable as he thought, or was he just trying to twist it to fit the ‘hero’ mold he wanted to squeeze himself into?

taglist// @47crayons @writing-is-a-martial-art
(ask to be added or removed!)

placeholder title: know your enemies (the original title was in mandarin, which is 知己知彼, basically translating to ‘know yourself and your enemies’, and is also a quote from sun tzu i’m trying to figure out a title with an equivalent meaning in english, but for now we’ll stick with that.)
status: plotting
genres: crime, psychological thriller, dark comedy??
summary: set in a fictional town in the outskirts of Beijing, detective zhang was finally stumped. serial murder cases that made no sense, no matter what angle she sees it from. along with another officer in her department that seems to have the hots for her, they swore to get down to the bottom of the bizarre happenings plaguing their beloved hometown. NANOWRIMO 2020 PROJECT
Balcombe Manor (working title)
It has been years since the local university purchased Balcombe Manor with plans to expand their campus after mysterious circumstances led to the building’s foreclosure. When the university fails to come up with the funding for the academic building that they intended to build on the property, they start renting out rooms in the manor as cheap, off-campus housing to recoup their costs. It is an unprecedented living situation for the eclectic group of students who move in but the strangeness is justified by the low rent… until they discover that the past is still living in the walls and may not be ready to be put to rest.
I don’t have enough prepped to do a full summary, but I finally decided on my November project! It is an epistolary gothic horror novel about a group of college students dealing with their ghosts (both internal and external). I’ll talk more about it as I get going, including a character list, but I’m really excited to experiment with a new genre and new formatting.
#I AM IN LOVE#and I know this is 2020#but I was snooping on your writing tag and found this#imma snoop more#and if you ended up writing any for 2020 I'd love to have a look!!#feel free to @me links and stuff :) thanks!!#other people's awesome writing

Lavender in Autumn
for @flashfictionfridayofficial ‘s prompt “Deceiving Fragrance”. Of course, I had to write something for Petal, Pedal for this one :D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The smell of the lavender lotion may have not been calming, as the new nurse had told her countless times, but Abigail still paused for a moment, breathing in the light scent as she stared out of her window. The wind was pushing the branches of the trees back and forth, like some sort of dance, sending orange and yellow leaves floating down into the courtyard.
Autumn. It had been a long time since Abigail had been able to see a real autumn, the kind where the trees began to settle down and let their leaves go to the wind, where the smell of pumpkin and apples would permeate the farmer’s market she would work at, drowning out the scents of spring and summer. Like the lavender that drifted out of the lotion bottle. The autumn of home.
For the first time in a long time, Abigail found herself missing home.
Keep reading
#Still smelling the lavender in the season it should never be in Abigail reached to her shoulder grasping a hand that would never be there.#cries#at first i was like#thats a mood abigail#and then I was like oof#and then i was like ooooooof#and now I'm very glad I got to read this!#other people's awesome writing
The writer formerly known as Raven Abernathy, now going by the name Kaius V. Noir, but you may address me as either. My writing doesn't stick to one main genre anymore, having ventured away from my dark fantasy roots and delved into a plethora of different areas from contemporary to science fiction and everything in between.
I am also a graphic designer and professional editor.
[Some of] My WIPS :
Something Rotten [psychological thriller] - It's been six years since true crime podcast host Quill Everest's sister was murdered and the case has long since gone cold without a single clue as to what might have happened. Things take a frightening turn when Quill finds themselves the target of a stalker who claims to know the answers they've been seeking all this time.
The Coming Storm, in collaboration with Reese Weston [pirates / medieval fantasy] - Urban Fallows is in search of a cure for the curse placed upon him by a mysterious old hag. Said to be located in the distant caverns of Fjorndal, Urban sees no choice but to rally a crew to aid him across the vast ocean--a quest that is none too easy for a man fearful of the sea. Bearing the title of Captain isn't any easier, and if not for the dashing and loyal Riggs at his side, Urban might have already given up.
Devil in the Details, in collaboration with Reese Weston [thriller] - Assassin-for-hire Ronan McCoy stumbles across an impressive thief on a job and recruits him as a member of the agency he works for, only to find himself stuck with Dakota Ramsey, a sarcastic addict who is a permanent thorn in Ronan's side ... and inevitably finds himself falling in love with the idiot.
Under Cover of Darkness, in collaboration with Reese Weston [horror, supernatural] - Felix Novak has been enamored with the paranormal since he was a child and communicated with what he thinks to have been a spirit through his Ouija board. He believes without any doubts that there is more to this world than we might think and is determined to prove it. Happenstance--or is it fate?--leads him to meet Casper Nguyen, a skeptic insomniac with a noise problem in his apartment that proves to be more ghost than rodent. Despite the evidence of paranormal activity, Cas refuses to believe he is being haunted. He finds Felix charming and intriguing enough, however, to accept his invitation to travel to rumored hauntings and prove once and for all that monsters are more than mere myth.
The Chemicals Between Us, in collaboration with Reese Weston [dystopia] - Indigo Silvius thought he had found the answers to saving the world from its downfall when in fact he set it on the path to its destruction. Responsibility weighs heavy on his shoulders when an explosion releases the chemicals he's created and shrouds the world in misery and death, seldom a tree left standing amidst the dust and debris. Weary after years of guilt and shame as his attempts to remedy his mistakes fail him time and time again, Indie sets out into the night to let the abominations he may as well have created rip him to shreds. Instead, he is discovered, barely holding on to life, by Gray Marley, a man with a tough exterior hiding a softness Indie slowly uncovers, and the potential answers to fixing Indie's mess.
Sanity's Decline [psychological thriller] - Shiloh Greaves keeps the truth of his sexuality caged behind his teeth, not out of shame but to protect Elias, because one slip might cost him his life. But in a tight knit town like Withervale, where rumors spread faster than you can confirm or deny their authenticity, it's impossible to keep a secret. The truth behind Elias' mysterious and sudden disappearance soon becomes the only secret Withervale has yet to unravel.
Jams 2.0, in collaboration with Reese Weston [contemporary] - The series follows three separate yet intertwined, one way or another, queer couples--Dash and Beckett; Cain, Ripley and Wren; Ciaran and Niall--and their struggles with addiction, romance, crime and affairs.
#hello!#adjsk I love all these ideas?!#okay i really love this quote tho#Shiloh Greaves keeps the truth of his sexuality caged behind his teeth not out of shame but to protect Elias because one slip might cost him#damn#so many amazing hooks ahh#other people's awesome writing
