The people who go "well who's going to look after you when you're old?" when you say you're not having kids are breathtakingly naive. Our next-door neighbour, somewhere in her mid-80s, has a son, grandkids, and a grear-granddaughter, and who's the one she calls when she needs help, and checks that she's not spending christmas alone? Me and my boyfriend.

Having kids is irrelevant if the answer to that question is still going to be "the mentally ill faggots next door."

David Corenswet (Superman) is in the Philippines and ngayon ko lang nalaman due to my socials being flooded with their photos waaaahhhh. Never been a Superman fan before (I'm more of a Marvel fan kasi) but I really loved the Christopher Reeve Superman kasi yung yung kinalakihan kong Superman. Di ko lang trip yung mga sumunod na iterations ni Supes (Sorry Henry Cavill) and James Gunn's version looks promising. Sana lang talaga worth the hype yung movie 😭 Anyway, tara nood tayo sa July?

An Autistic’s Perspective on Superman

That Blue Boy Scout is just like me. I’ll back up a few steps— I am not making the claim that Superman or Clark Kent are autistic, but, for me, this is an example of the shoe fitting.

Superman comes from the alien planet of Krypton. Rocketed down to Kent Farm and taken in by Martha and Jonathan Kent. All these powers he does not understand, cannot get quite the hold of, but he learns as he goes. He looks like a human, takes the shape and appearance of one, can dress and walk and talk like one, but as David Corenswet said during a piece of press: “Superman has a certain solemn loneliness to him where he wants so desperately to be connected to humanity. And he’ll never quite be one of them [human].”

He can try to be human: hold a job like one, go to school like one, fall in love— but there is always things that make him an outlier. Things that make him, very literally, alien to humans. This is a majority of what mine, and many other people on the spectrum who I have talked to’s, growing up looked like: feeling like an alien.

Knowing you are different without a clear reason as to why. All these powers or abilities, but all they get is confusion or mockery or— in Superman’s case— fear. He could break someone’s hand if he shakes it too hard. In My Adventures with Superman (or MAWS), he gets a little startled and crushes a ceramic cup in his hand, or breaks a door handle when he gets too calm and doesn’t think it all the way through. Doesn’t hide himself or mask it.

In Superman: The Movie and MAWS, the super-hearing is showcased, and I thought, “That’s me!” upon seeing them. Hearing everything at once, not being able to shut one sound off versus another. In MAWS, it’s shown to be overwhelming! Clark is up all night saving person to person since he can’t shut all the sounds off, and it drives him a little nuts.

MAWS also has the best showing of a difference being accepted. Though before that, we get the part that hit home the hardest: the repetition of the idea of being “normal.” A handful of times, Clark or as Superman, is asked if he can be normal. He’s hurt by it, strongly.

One of my favorite scenes is the other side of the coin, where he asks Lois Lane if it bothers her that he’s not human. She replies with, “Does it ever bother you that I am?” He answers that it doesn’t, because it shouldn’t matter and it doesn’t. They love each other for who they are, despite the discrepancies on, earlier, being normal.

One of the best scenes in cartoon history, in my opinion.

This is not to say that autism is a superpower, as it is not. It has its burdens and challenges, those of which I deal with every day. I will, however, say that it is not all doom and gloom: it can be a beautiful thing.

Superman, within the last year, has come to mean a lot to me.
