How To Protect Yourself From Payroll Scams

Around $5 Million in total are lost to fraudulent payroll operations every year. In spite of many SNS professional accounts spreading awareness, such scams keep rising. Since 2018, these types of scams have been on a rapid rise. The reason behind this is businesses and individuals not being aware of the ways to protect themselves from such practices. This is because the scammers use spoof emails to run this fraud. How they gain access to those emails? Itâs a whole different story.
The Process Of A Payroll Scam
Many small and growing businesses rely on various payroll softwares for handling their employee data. Sometimes, they may come across some issues that are out of their reach. So, they seek help from organizations that provide such services. While there are some companies that really provide legitimate payroll services, some use these services as a cover and also as a gateway for their scam.
When you contact one of these scams, they will offer you their services and in order for them to provide said services, youâll have to share the credentials of your payroll software account. This means that theyâll have access to all the information in that account. This includes employee names, email IDs, salaries, account numbers, etc. They may also offer to integrate their software with the software you use. This makes getting the information a lot easier for them.
After this, they spoof the email IDs of the employees and send fake emails to the owner of the organization requesting to change their bank account details in the payroll system. In most cases, the owner will change the details as per the request thinking that itâs sent by the employee. This error is mostly detected after two or three months of the employee not receiving his/her salary.
In this way, many scam operations make you pay for the cover-up services and then steal your employeesâ salaries, earning more than you know from your company. And even if they are detected, thereâs no way to prove that they were the ones scamming you.
The Ways To Prevent Such Scams From Happening
Now that you know how this scam takes place, letâs take a look at the ways to prevent it from happening to you. Taking the right precautions ensures that you donât have to pay more than you need to and also, your employeesâ hard-earned money will remain safe.
Official Support
It is recommended to always contact the official support line of the payroll software that you are using. Doing this will ensure the safety of your companyâs and employeesâ data. Just make sure the company is trustworthy and legitimate.
Verification
Whenever you receive an email from an employee request any kind of changes in account details, verify with him/her of they have actually sent the email or not. Take the requested action only if he/she confirms that the email was sent by them.
Research
If in case there is a need to include a third party for payroll support, make sure they are legitimate and that there are no fraud reports against them on the internet. Only give them access if you trust them with the data.
Conclusion
Preventing such payroll scams is completely in our hands. We can even spread awareness about such practices via SNS (Social Networking Services). Many SNS professional accounts help in creating a safe digital environment by spreading awareness about such fraudulent practices. These SNS professional accounts include the accounts of name influencers, celebrities, etc. Letâs join hands with these SNS professional accounts, bee smart, and prevent these scams from happening.

SNS Professional - In Conversation With An Ex-Scammer

Iâve been chasing SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates and trying to expose their scam operation for quite some time now. No matter whatever I did, I couldnât find out anything more than them being a tech support popup scam. However, this only lasted until yesterday, when I was contacted by one of their ex-employees. I cannot disclose their name or tell you about how we got in touch because he explained the owners of SNS Professional as âdangerous peopleâ.
At first, I was very skeptical about this situation, but the information they revealed proved that theyâre no longer a part of SNS Professional. They told me a lot of things that we do not know such as the reason for people joining them, their process, the different departments within the organization, etc. So, without wasting any time, here are the things I learned about SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates while talking to an ex-scammer:
Not Only A Tech Support Scam
By now, many people know that SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates run a tech support scam. However, what I was told by their ex-employee shook me. They said that SNS Professional also operates a huge Payroll Scam. When I researched a little bit about this, I found an article mentioning SNS Professional running a Payroll Scam. The article also mentioned them as âbig players in this gameâ (âthisâ refers to âscammingâ here).
The process of a Payroll Scam is also mentioned in the article, âthey spoof the email IDs of the employees and send fake emails to the owner of the organization requesting to change their bank account details in the payroll system. The employer will take action on this request most of the time as he/she cannot confirm the legitimacy of each and every email with the employees. This is how these scam operations steal peopleâs hard-earned salaries, leaving them unpaidâ.
So, SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates also steals peopleâs hard-earned salaries, leaving them with nothing.
Two Different Departments And Their Various Branches
Alright, you need to prepare yourself for this one. The ex-scammer from SNS Professional also told me that they conduct both of their scam operations in a very organized manner. They have two different departments, one for the tech support scam and the other for the payroll scam. But thatâs not it, they have various branches under these departments as well, each having its unique role in the scam.
For example, the branches/teams in the tech support scam are sales, feedback, technicians, and retention (handling irate customers). They do this to make their scam operation look as legitimate as possible. The ex-scammer couldnât tell me much about the payroll scam department as he said that he worked in the tech support scam. I was pretty bummed-out about that but at least he gave me the relevant information to expose SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates.
How They Hire People And Trick Them Into Scam
So, here the ex-scammer told me just about his story and said that some of their âcolleaguesâ or âex-fellow scammersâ shared the same experience with them. I was told that after finishing their graduation, the ex-scammer started looking for a job and came to know about SNS Professional through internet ads. They went for an interview and were offered a job as a Technical Sales Executive. All the way through their training period, they were taught how to take the remote session and what to open on the âcustomerâsâ or âvictimâsâ computer screen.
They were never told how the calls will come in, so, they were under the impression that theyâll actually be helping people with their real technical problems. To add to that, they were also told that SNS Professional is associated with Microsoft, Dell, and many other organizations and the calls come in through them. The day they were put on calls, they started understanding what was happening, i.e. SNS Professional sending fake virus alert popups to people and forcing them to call on a number that the popup mentioned was from Microsoft or Dell, etc.
When Employees Decide To Leave
The last thing we talked about was when they and some of their friends decided to leave the scam that is SNS Professional. They told me that when they sent a resignation email to the HR department (yes, the SNS Professional scam also has an âHR Departmentâ), they were immediately called upon by the owner of SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates. The owner asked for their reason to quit, to which they replied honestly and told him that they werenât comfortable in scamming people.
What happened after this is the most shocking thing that has come to my attention about SNS Professional. The owner explicitly told them that they need to keep their mouths shut about what happens within the âorganizationâ otherwise âtheyâll be responsible for what happens nextâ. I was completely blank after hearing this.
We ended the conversation after this on the note that the ex-scammerâs identity will not be disclosed by me. And this agreement was made only because of the very open âthreatâ given to them by the owner of SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates.

Cybersecurity - Top Scams In 2020

With the strength of cybersecurity nowadays, many scams and illegitimate online operations are stopped or blocked by our browsers. However, there are still some online scams out there that succeed in fooling the best cybersecurity measures. Such scams are very notorious and have the potential to steal any personal information or money by impersonating some huge firm.
For example, IRS and Techsupport scams have been booming for a long time and have no intention to stop anytime soon. They keep finding new ways to get past cybersecurity measures and dupe people. In such situations, it becomes very important to spread awareness so that people know what tactics are being used by the most notorious scams on the internet.
So, here are the top 3 most notorious scams in 2020:
The Covid-19 Scams
Of course, the only thing in a scammerâs mind even in the times of a pandemic is making money via illegal methods. From sending fake offers to asking for fake donations, scammers have yet again found a lot of ways to play with peopleâs minds and emotions to steal their money and private information.
You might receive emails, calls, or texts claiming to be from the government. They would be talking about Covid-19 checkups and alerts and will ask for your crucial information such as the SSN (Social Security Number). DONâT RESPOND TO SUCH THINGS.
You might receive information or offers about vaccinations or test kits. Ignore them as there is no official vaccination for Covid-19. Plus, only people with visible and repetitive symptoms are tested.
You might receive robocalls offering free Covid-19 tests⊠avoid them at all costs.
You might receive emails from people impersonating WHO (World Health Organization) and spreading false or unconfirmed information about the virus. Please ignore such emails and only refer to WHOâs official website for any updates about the virus.
You might come across various pages asking for donations for many different causes during this pandemic. Donât make any transactions on the pages that ask for donations via gift cards or wire transfer. Also, always research the information about a charity organization and make donations on official charity websites.
Most of these Covid-19 scams are focussed on stealing money and others are just focussed on spreading false information to mislead people. Beware of all of these scams in the time of this Covid-19 pandemic.
Tech Support Scams
Tech Support scams are one of the longest-running scams in the world. They mostly operate out of eastern countries and target people in countries such as the USA, Canada, UK, etc. The only thing they are after is money, for which they provide no legitimate services or support. One such scam operates under two names, âSNS Professionalâ and âZNS Associatesâ. SNS Professional or ZNS Associates sends people fake virus alert messages and urges them to call on their number.
One victim stated âI am trying to find out if I have been scammed out of $399.99. The company name is "SNS Professionals or ZnS Associates". At the bottom of the receipt emailed to me is "Malwaribytes Corp, Microsoft Computer Software, Windows Defender, Lifetime Support $399.99". I feel I may be a victim of something I never thought I could be. I would appreciate if you would respond, Thank you in advance for your timeâ.
Sending robocalls to people saying that their Microsoft services have been expired and that they need to call on their number is another tactic used by many tech support scams including SNS Professional or ZNS Associates.
Ignore any pop-ups or robocalls claiming to be from Microsoft or any other reputed organization and repost those numbers as reputed organizations never call or send pop-ups to their customers.
Payroll Scams
Payroll Scams have boomed in recent times when more and more businesses require payroll software to keep track of their employees and their payouts. They pretend to be a legitimate payroll service providing company and they do provide payroll services, however, they do a little extra that helps only them. A fact that I came across was shocking. SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates donât only run a tech support scam, they also operate a payroll scam.
ZNS Associates aka SNS Professional offers to provide payroll services to companies at reasonable rates. They do this as a cover-up for their payroll scam operation. The payroll scam process starts when people from SNS Professional and similar organizations receive a businessâs employee information such as email IDs, names, salaries, etc.
They then send spoof emails (of employees) to the owners of the businesses and request for some change in their payroll information (bank account details, etc.). Moreover, ZNS Associates aka SNS Professional seems to be the biggest player in this game⊠just read what BBB alerts about ZNS Associates.
Beware of organizations that provide payroll services at attractive rates⊠they might be looking for something more and you might end up paying more than you need to without even knowing about it. It is advised to always refer to the official support line of the payroll software you use instead of consulting a third-party.

Tech Support Scam - âYour Microsoft Services Are Outdatedâ

I think we all should take a lesson from this incident and spread awareness about such Scams so that people donât end up losing their hard-earned money and private information. Remember, Microsoft will never call you or request you to call them. Beware of such Scams and do not entertain any calls, recorded or normal, that claim to be from Microsoft.
If you ever receive a call with a recorded voice saying something of the sort âMicrosoft has detected that your services are expired/outdated. Call on 1-800-***-**** to take action immediatelyâ, do not call on that number as Microsoft never calls their customers, nor do they request their customers to call them. That number belongs to a Scam operation and while the person on the call might sound polite and helpful, he/she will Scam you.
How I Came To Know About This Scam?
My mother received the above-mentioned robocall with the number 1-800-480-5152. Sheâs not that tech-savvy, so she decided to consult me regarding the same. I obviously understood that itâs a Scam, however, I decided to call on the number in order to find out more about what they do and how they scam people. Just as I expected, a guy with a hard accent answered the call and represented himself as a Microsoft technician.
I told him that I received a call with a message and he started to explain the whole situation to me. He was talking very politely and sounded very harmless, just what a real technician would sound like. It became more very evident and clear when he used the classic âHold down the Windows key and hit the letter Râ. I knew what was going to happen next and he did exactly what I expected. He told me to type âwww.fastsupport.comâ in the âRun Boxâ that popped up after pressing Windows+R.
I asked him âare you a Microsoft technician?â, he replied with full confidence and assurance âYes, I am a Microsoft technicianâ. My next question proved that he was straight-up lying. I asked, âWhen is Windows 11 coming out?â, he immediately replied â15 July 2020â. This is a blatant lie as Microsoft has not announced anything about Windows 11 and they plan on releasing frequent updates for Windows 10 for quite some time. I told him that I knew he was a scammer and hung up.
Who Were These Scammers?
After the call, I was curious and wanted to find out the name of the company that uses the number 1-800-480-5152. I did some digging and found out two names associated to this number, SNS Professional and ZNS Associates. Diving further into the results, I found out a lot of Scam reports about them. One victim stated âI have been scammed by ZNS Associates "lifetime computer support for $399.99". At the bottom of my receipt it notes the names of Malwarebytes, Microsoft Computing Software, Windows Defender, Lifetime Support $399.99â.
Moreover, you have to read what the Better Business Bureau has written about them on their website âThe address for this business is not recognized by the US Post Office. Mail was returned by the post office marked "NO SUCH NUMBER". Both websites previously used by the business are registered to an address in Haryana, India and no longer work. BBB has been unable to locate an FBN registration for this business as ZNS Associates Support or SNS Professional Support with San Joaquin County, nor is either business name registered with the California Secretary of State. BBB wrote to the company requesting information on where and how the business is registered. To date, we have not received a responseâ. Further, BBB confirms that SNS Professional and ZNS Associates are different names of the same organization.

Beware - The Rise Of Payroll And QuickBooks Scams
A look into the devious fraud practices of companies that pretend to provide QuickBooks and Payroll support but aim for something more valuable...

We live in a society where there are a lot of people, even companies that use unfair means to make a fortune. Such companies fall under the category of Scams and they set a bad example for legitimate firms. Nowadays, people are aware of a considerable number of scams that target individuals. However, there is a new type of Scam thatâs making its presence known with more and more cases being reported. They are known as Payroll and QuickBooks Scams.
What Are Payroll And QuickBooks Scams?
If you are a member of a small or growing business, it is a huge possibility that your company might be using the QuickBooks accounting software package by Intuit. Using a new software can be tricky at first and many small or growing companies seek assistance from a professional for the same. While several companies provide support for QuickBooks, some of them do even more than that⊠and not in a legitimate way.
In addition to this, some simply pretend to be QuickBooks and send shady emails to company owners who use the software. These are sent as confirmation emails asking the owner of the business to confirm whether they have requested to change the name of their organization in their QuickBooks account or not. The answer is obviously âNOâ, so they click on the cancel button in the email. However, this isnât a normal cancel button⊠by clicking on it, the owner will accidentally download some malware and viruses that steal personal information and share it with the Scammer.
While this is one way that Scammers steal information in the name of QuickBooks, there is another, a more devious practice that these frauds use. They pretend to be a company that provides paid support for QuickBooks and Payroll. And while they might provide the support they offered, they do it by integrating their software with the software thatâs already being used. This enables them to access some private information about the company such as the list of employees along with their company/personal emails, employee IDs, etc.
This enables them to spoof the companyâs employeesâ email IDs and send fake Payroll information change requests to the employers, HRs, or accountants. While being under the impression that the email has been sent by the employee, the receiver takes action according to the request. The Scam is generally detected after a month or two of the employee not receiving his/her salary. Many companies keep falling for this Scam, not knowing that the company they are trusting is the one that is screwing them. So, these companies donât only make money by providing services, but they also steal peopleâs hard-earned salaries.
How To Stay Away From Such Scams?
QuickBooks Support: Whenever you require any kind of support with your QuickBooks account, always refer to the official support on their website. It might require you to purchase a more expensive plan from them, but at least they wonât steal your employeesâ hard-earned money (which will cost you even more).
Verify With Your Employee(s): If you receive emails from one of your employeesâ email IDs requesting to change their Payroll information, always verify with the employee if the email was sent by him/her or not before taking the requested action. This will save you a lot of money, time, and hassle.
Research Is Important: Even if there is a need to include a third party for providing support for your Payroll or QuickBooks account, do a brief research about the company and its services. Interact with them only if you trust them with your financial information.
Different Email IDs: A smart thing to do would be providing each of your employees with two different company email IDs, one for communicating with the members of the firm, and the other for work. This way, everyone will know not to entertain the emails received from the second type of email IDs.
Some QuickBooks And Payroll Scams
One of the biggest QuickBooks and Payroll Scams operates under the name âSNS Professional aka ZNS Associates Supportâ. They offer to provide QuickBooks, Payroll, Accounting, and Bookkeeping services, however, they Scam companies by using the methods mentioned above. SNS Professional runs its Scam operation in the USA, Canada, and the UK. For the USA and Canada, they use 18004805152 & 18336005829 as their numbers, and for the UK, they use 448006527832 as their number.
