https://bit.ly/48Tin0X - 🚨 The FBI has issued a warning about a new scam tactic involving couriers who collect cash or precious metals from victims, primarily targeting the elderly. Scammers, posing as tech support, financial advisors, or government officials, deceive victims into liquidating their assets for protection against alleged hacking threats. #ScamAlert #FBISecurity 💸 From May to December last year, these scams resulted in losses exceeding $55 million, with the elderly being the most affected. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received 19,000 complaints in the first half of 2023 alone, with losses totaling around $542 million. Nearly half of these victims were over 60, suffering 66% of the total losses. #SeniorSafety #CyberFraud 🔒 The scammers use sophisticated methods to gain the trust of their victims, often setting up a passcode as a false security measure. Once the assets are handed over, the victims lose all contact with the scammers. This technique is an evolution of the 'phantom hacker scam,' combining impostor tech support with financial and government impersonation. #ConsumerProtection #OnlineScams 📞 Victims typically receive a call to resolve an imaginary problem, leading them to inadvertently grant remote access to their devices. The scammers then exploit this access to check for profitable accounts and instruct victims to transfer funds, often to overseas accounts. #TechSupportScam #CyberAwareness 🛑 To prevent falling victim to these scams, the IC3 advises never purchasing gold or precious metals at the request of supposed government or business representatives. People should protect their personal information, avoid unsolicited communications, and never allow strangers access to their computers. #ScamPrevention #StaySafeOnline 📢 The FBI encourages anyone who suspects such fraudulent activity to report it to the IC3 immediately, providing detailed transaction information to aid in investigations. #ReportFraud #FBIWarning Remember, staying informed and cautious is key to protecting yourself and your loved ones from these sophisticated scams.

**Senior citizen fell victim to a sophisticated cybercrime scam**
I recently received two suspicious calls. Two days back, someone claiming to be from TRAI threatened to disconnect my phone service in 2 hours. Yesterday, a woman posing as an RBI employee warned me about suspicious credit card activity. I ended both calls immediately.
These incidents highlight the constant evolution of #cyberfraud. Despite increased awareness, people continue to fall victim to these scams.
#cyberfraud #databreach
I'm sharing a recent case before the Allahabad High Court of digital fraud encountered by a senior citizen.
#techsupportscam
➡️ Smt. Kakoli Das Gupta, a senior citizen, was victimized by a #cybercrime scam. A #fraudulentcaller posing as a FedEx courier claimed a suspicious package in her name had been shipped to Taiwan. Followed by an imposter claiming to be a police officer, who tricked her into revealing her bank account details. This led to the fraudulent transfer of Rs. 1,48,30,000 from her accounts over several days.

➡️The police swung into action, tracing the #fraudulenttransactions. During the investigation, Nishant's name surfaced, linked to the account of Sandhu Enterprises, where a significant amount of the stolen money had been deposited. Despite not being named in the FIR, Nishant was accused based on his father's name mentioned in a co-accused's #confession. Soon after, the police arrested Nishant and claimed to have recovered incriminating evidence from him. Nishant was arrested and has been in Jail since May 7, 2024.
#onlinesafteyforseniorcitizens
➡️Nishant's lawyers argued vehemently for his bail before the #Allahabad #HighCourt. They contended that Nishant Roy is a BBA student who was not named in the #FIR. He was implicated based on his father's name mentioned by another accused. False #recoverymemos were prepared, and no transactions were made in his account. Offences are triable by a Magistrate and the maximum punishment is 7 years. Custodial interrogation is no longer required. They stressed that Nishant's #custodialinterrogation was no longer required.
➡️On the other side, the state's counsel argued against granting bail. They pointed out that the informant, a vulnerable senior citizen, had been digitally defrauded and that the money trail led to an account connected to the applicant Nishant. The applicant's complicity is established, and he is not entitled to bail.
#cybersecurity
➡️Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ashutosh Srivastava, J., who presided over the case was not convinced to release Nishant on #bail at the stage when the #investigation against other co-accused, including Nishant's father, is ongoing and the #charges are yet to be framed.
#phishing
➡️The High Court rejected the bail application given the nature of the crime and ongoing investigations.
*Case Nishant Roy v. State of UP
Crl. Misc. bail App. 23954/2024, Before the Allahabad High Court

Reasons why the IT industry is in shatters in Bengal
Approximately three years back, I had authored a blog on the rampant scams prevalent amongst a new breed of companies operating as BPOs. To be very honest these very companies hardly follow any ethical practices imperious for running a business. They believe in quick bucks by duping the naive non-tech savvy overseas customers. It all started years back, ever since some manipulative minds realized the long term potential of the unscrupulous practice.
One might wonder- “How come they are called BPOs then?” Well, the answer is simple. A close-ended question was apt. And the answer would be no. Rather the misguided question should have been- “Are they really BPOs?” Over the last five years, the quintessential IT companies are running their ITES arm as BPMs (Business Process Management). The inveterate chiselers have never received any outsourcing project from any entity. Who are their clients then? Are they captive ones? If yes, then which brand(s) are they catering to?
Yes! Now you get the contemptuous reply “MICROSOFT”. Ever since it started a decade and a half before, it was never expected to give a bad name to the IT industry to the extent as it is now. Who is to be blamed? All those cavalier minds who were keen to mint money deceitfully instead of earning them honestly. The end result is that the previously oblivious client base has become aware thanks to the rigorous campaign of their respective governments. Now no bonafide campaigns can be outsourced to any start-up, definitely not in Bengal.
Who are responsible? Can only the pettifoggers be held accountable? Certainly, it is not just they who have led to this situation. Also, race plays an important role. The quality of manpower has gone down drastically over the years. Adding salt to injury is the lackadaisical work culture common in this part of the country which deterred the aspiring companies from availing bountiful workforce. I remember when I joined the industry sixteen and a half years back. Speaking flawless and grammatical English in a neutralized accent was the key criteria. Any MTI (Mother Tongue Influence) or FLI (First Language Influence) were seriously dealt with. But over the last few years, the recruiters have started compromising on the quality of the candidates who all literally struggle to frame even a correct sentence. They can be accused too for bringing down the standard of the industry stooping to this level.
