It's very common for abusers to tell kids "if you tell anyone about what's happening you'll be in trouble because you're a bad kid" so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some of that too.

I wonder if the reason why Loki didn't try to confide in Harald earlier was because he was too scared that his father would've rejected him, just like everyone else... Harald was the only one who was ever nice to him, and he was terrified of losing that. He was terrified of allowing himself to love his dad because what if Harald would hate him upon seeing his eyes for the first time, too?
