Badlands

Badlands (1973) is the directorial debut film of Terrence Malick. I adore the cinematography of this film and the natural landscapes depicted of America’s Midwest. This film has so many strong visual references for me and had a big influence on my interest in Western aesthetics, which will likely play a large role in my final project.

Union Western

Union Western is a Texas based fashion label specialising in custom Western themed garments. I particularly love their graphics and the flamboyancy of their style. One of my ideas is to create a gender inclusive artwork for a skateboard. Country music and Western aesthetics have a big influence on my style and I envisage working these themes into my design.

I’ve recently been researching Polish film poster design and the “Polish School of Posters” period circa 1950-1980s. Posters for promotion were in some years one of the only government permitted forms of art, and artists were commissioned to create posters for international films often with little or no visual of the film itself. Some really unique styles came out of such an oppressive period and I’m inspired to illustrate something stylistically similar, unsure of the medium as yet.
