do you go to a day program if so what's it like
Yes! I go 4 days a week. There are 20-30 of us on any day and then a bunch of staff. We do things at the location like crafts or fitness stuff or games or cooking and then we also go on a lot out outings to places in the community! I’ve been going for 4 years and it has helped me a ton!

Added a new page with some phrases I commonly use on my device so I don’t have to type them out or search for the buttons! I have such a mental block for editing my AAC but I should do it more because I’m happy when I do!

Getting AAC Device From Insurance
I got my dedicated device almost a year ago! Here’s how I got it.
Went to doctor and got referred to the assistive technology department at local rehab. I had already been using AAC full time for a long time due to total speech regression (diagnosed as apraxia of speech), and was in speech therapy to try to regain vocal words but it was not working at all.
I had an idea evaluation with a SLP and OT specifically who worked with AAC and got to trial a device. I had been using Proloquo2Go but decided with trial that touchchat with word power is better for me.
They handled the rest of the paperwork and got stuff from my doctor. Unfortunately my insurance changed in this time so there was a lot of delay. Also the original company I was going to go with insurance was being a pain, so I went with AbleNet
Once I switched to getting my device with AbleNet it only took a few weeks to get my device and they kept me updated the whole time!
Now that I have my device if I ever have issues or want to change the app I use or even change iPad size I can at any time for 5 years! I’ve found the company really good to work with.

I’m moving into an adult group home
I’m excited, but I’m scared. I know this is what I need right now. My mom can’t watch me all the time, and I need more people to interact with. If anyone has experience with a group home, please let me know.

I was trying to look back further on your page to see if there was anything, but I got lost. Anyway, I'm moving into an adult group home early next month, what do you think of living in one? Any advice for someone going to one?
I don’t know what it is like in your country; i can only speak for sweden and my area. I’ve lived in two (and another type of home), i moved into my first one at 14, so that one was for children.
But my current one is for adults. And it’s frickin amazing here. I have my own apartment, though right outside my door, there’s a living room/shared area where we all can hang out. The staff are so helpful. The staff cook lunch and dinner, but if i want i can make my own food and eat in my apartment. Idk what else you want to know?😆
advice.... hm.. just be yourself, that way they’ll know the real you, not that person that you pretend to be while masking (if u do that), if you pretend to be neurotypical, they’ll not know how to help you. So just be honest and be your amazing autistic self.
Oh and. I stim a lot and the staff don’t care, it’s just .. me. So that’s cool!!!

To everyone with sensory issues:
You are not a baby for melting down because of under/overstimulation. You are not being immature or “just throwing a tantrum” when you have meltdowns. The discomfort and pain and fear you feel due to your sensory issues is real and valid, and shouldn’t be dismissed as silly or unimportant by people who don’t understand it.

Autistic culture is reading about autistic experiences and happily realizing “other people do this too?!”, also known as “it’s not just a me thing?”.

autism problem #1136
You find that one really good stim you can do in class, but then everyone notices it and points it out and you don’t feel like you can do it anymore.
