If you are someone who likes to watch a lot of cop shows, I want you to ask yourself a few questions.
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate Internal Affairs? Isn’t the job of Internal Affairs to root out the “bad cops”? Isn’t their job to make sure police follow the rules? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate defense attorneys? Isn’t the defense attorney’s job to protect the rights of all citizens? Isn’t it their job to make sure police follow the law? Isn’t it their job to make sure everyone is treated fairly under the system? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?
Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, get upset when citizens invoke their constitutional rights? Don’t those rights exist to ensure all citizens are treated fairly? Don’t they exist to ensure innocent people are not wrongfully incriminated? Why are citizens who invoke their rights presented as dishonest, untrustworthy, or antagonistic?
To be clear, I’ve watched Brooklyn 99 and enjoyed it. I was watching Elementary the other day. But even when I watch shows I like, I make a mental note every time a cop lies, breaks the law, subverts someone’s basic rights, or just generally acts like an asshole to the people the are meant to serve and protect.
How often are they called out on their behavior? How often are they punished for it? How often is it reinforced as correct by the narrative?
When I tell people to be critical of the media they consume that is what I mean. Not simply calling it terrible and moving on, but actually engaging thoughtfully, asking questions, and forming conclusions about what that media is trying to say to you. Then decide whether you want to keep listening, or if it will be better for you in the long run to move on.

…every once in awhile, I allow these outer wonders to kind of blind me to the inner miracles that are occuring, transpiring every day, all around us.  I didn’t see any miracles today, Larry.  No, no, no, but, you see, the tendrils that connect human beings– one to another, they’re just so…unlikely, so inherently, um, fragile. I–I think that it’s a miracle that they even exist at all.

Favorite fictional females day 30
Megan Reeves
Tumblr media
Megan Reeves is one of those characters that just kinda feels like a warm hug. Not that's she like always gentle or kind or loving etc just that seeing her on screen gives me a lot of comfort.
Profilers are a character common to procedurals and think she is probably the best integrated, in that she is not an outside voice directing or correcting the team.

~ Never Again ~
"I-I don't know what you want from me. I really d-didn't do anything," stammered the young Larry Fleinhardt as the two muscle-bound guys who had intercepted him just before the exit of the building took him into one of the back rooms of the casino.
Both men remained silent. While one led Larry to a chair in the center of the room and forcibly made him sit down, the other positioned himself next to the door. It was very obvious that the two were not the friendliest of contemporaries.
"W-what you're doing here i-is deprivation of liberty. You have n-n-no right to k-k-keep me here."
It didn't matter how hard Larry tried to suppress the trembling in his voice, he couldn't. And his voice wasn't the only thing shaking. No ... His whole body was in motion, filled with an unpleasant tingle of fear.
It felt like an eternity before the door to the room opened once more and an elegantly dressed woman entered the room. Brown curls framed her narrow face and fell loosely over her shoulders. Her piercing green eyes scrutinized the young man sitting in the middle of the room.
"So this is him?" The woman's gaze wandered to the two men and the one standing next to the door nodded.
"We've definitely seen it, ma'am," he confirmed and the lady slowly walked closer to the chair. She tilted her head to one side thoughtfully.
"He's half a child. How old are you, boy?"
Larry opened his mouth to say something, but his voice caught in his throat.
"Let me guess. Eighteen? Nineteen? Definitely not old enough to enter my casino."
"T-twenty. I ... a-a-am twenty." The young man's voice was quiet, but his counterpart took note of the words. She nodded.
"Like I said, not old enough."
Slowly, the owner of the casino began to walk around the chair. With each step, her pointed shoe heels made clacking noises.
"My men told me they've been watching you. You ... are said to have cheated."
These words caused the fear in Larry's body to turn at least partially into anger.
"I did not cheat!"
Surprised, the woman stopped behind the chair. She had probably not expected such an angry response. Eventually, however, she started moving once more and stood in front of the blond again.
"So you didn't count cards at blackjack?"
Larry bit his lip nervously.
"It's ... it's n-not cheating. I j-j-just use math skills to keep track of the game's progress."
"Now ... that," the woman said, leaning forward to look deep into Larry's eyes, "is what we call cheating in this casino, my boy."
The glint in the green eyes was dangerous and Larry swallowed hard. It was clear that the lady would not tolerate card counting.
"You're going to give me back all the money you won. And then you will never show your face here again. Do you understand? Because otherwise ..."
The woman looked over at one of her men, who had stepped over to the desk in the room and taken a nut and a nutcracker from a bowl. With a menacing smile on his lips, the guy cracked the nut.
"Yours are next."
Larry's eyes widened in shock and he nodded quickly.
"I-I'll do a-anything you say. I-I swear!"
The casino owner nodded as well and patted the young man's head.
"Good boy."
She turned and strode to the door, but not without turning to her people again.
"Teach him a lesson."
Larry wanted to say something, wanted to protest, but before he could, the woman had long since left the room.
He didn't know where the man behind the chair had suddenly got the baton – he was probably carrying it on his belt – but when the first blow hit Larry's shoulder, he screamed as loud as he could.
The men didn't care. The other also stepped closer to the chair and as blow after blow followed, bone after bone shattering, Larry realized that he would never forget this lesson.
He was already half unconscious when they threw his bloody, tortured body into an alley behind the casino.
He told the people who found him and the people in the hospital that a group of youths had beaten him up in order to rob him.
No one was to know what had really happened. And he knew one thing for sure. He would never play blackjack again. Never again.

i find it so interesting how people act like "critically examining a piece of media" is the opposite of "enjoying that piece of media." rip to you but i actually find it really enjoyable and compelling to dissect and think through the art i engage with

Larry calls Charles by his real name. This is significant To Me because:
Charlie serves as a shorthand for the image built around Charles partly due to the inability of those around him to truly understand him.
This myth is so pervasive that Charlie himself buys into it.
Yet Larry demonstrates an understanding of the man behind the myth, of the Charles behind Charlie, which is signified by Larry’s inconsistent then non-use of the name Charlie.
When I write this essay it’s over—

went fic diving through for an old fandom and I think I’ve absolutely glutted myself on fics. It’s strange being so full from stories that havent updated since 2009 by accounts who haven’t posted since 2013.
