“Neither am I, but maybe a white wine would go well with Chinese?” Juliet shrugged usually other people made decisions about what to drink, not her. “I think I’ve usually had Riesling though, at least I think that was what it was called.” she said with a chuckle, she had a terrible memory sometimes, especially about things she didn’t think were important, they went in one ear and out the other. In moments like these she wished she had paid more attention. “Did you want to go now or have you still got more grocery shopping to do?”
Tumblr media
lana smiled. “sounds good, whatever you think.” she looked down at her own sparsely filled cart, realising she couldn’t just take off now and ignore the necessities (as much as she would like to do so). “ah - i think i’ve still got a bit more to do. how about you come round to mine when you’re done and we can order?”

“Chinese sounds good, I haven’t had it in ages and I could do with some honey chicken and fried rice.” At the thought of food her stomach growled, she’d hurriedly eaten a sandwich from the cafeteria in between clients but that had been a couple of hours ago now. “That would be great, what kind of wine were you thinking of?” she asked curiously. The exhaustion she’d been feeling when she first walked into the grocery store was gone and replaced with excitement at the chance to spend more time with her friend.
Tumblr media
“oh god, don’t ask me.” lana couldn’t help but laugh. she’d certainly heard of different wines going with different foods, but god knows she didn’t know and hardly cared anyway - could they really be that different? “i’m hardly a connoisseur. what do you think?” lana felt herself livening up, and smiled when it was reflected in her friend. they hadn’t seen each other in far too long, it was nice to finally be able to spend some time together.

dravcnlea‌:
“If I don’t tell her tonight, you have full permission to bug me non-stop until I actually do it.” For Juliet, there was no greater motivation then someone asking if she’d done something or not. She’d also use this technique with her clients, asking them if they had talked to one new person that week or had done something for themselves, it had varying degrees of success with other people, but for her it always worked. “What do you feel like having? I’ll be happy with whatever, so you choose.”
Tumblr media
“i will definitely take you up on that... offer.” lana smirked - she seemed to spend the majority of her time bugging people, whether it be students or other staff members, she sometimes feared it had become her default setting, but occasionally it did come in handy. she thought for a moment, biting her lip. “we could grab something from the jade flower, then go back to mine... we could have some wine maybe? i don’t have any at home, but i could grab some now if you’d like?” she felt more relaxed now - after all, it was just juliet, and she couldn’t think of anyone she’d rather have a drink with.

dravcnlea‌:
“I will,” she promised “I’ll even do it tonight, instead off putting it off.” Juliet had a habit of procrastinating doing things that were important, sometimes she wondered how she’d even managed to propose at the right time, instead of putting it off for months. Juliet’s mind halted for a moment, a wave of embarrassment washing over her. She couldn’t believe she’d forgotten. Of course Lana didn’t want a drink. God, she was so stupid, her exhausted mind had thought that that would have been a good idea but now she regretted saying anything at all. “We definitely do need to catch up, I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever. Maybe we could get dinner or something? Have you eaten yet?”
Tumblr media
“good. good!” she smiled, feeling a strange sense of pride blooming in her chest - juliet wasn’t exactly one to promise things easily. lana blushed, hoping she hadn’t made juliet feel too bad - it didn’t matter to her, the poor woman had more than enough to deal with without remembering all of her friend’s multitude of issues as well. lana hoped the other woman didn’t notice the cogs turning in her brain as she made a decision - she hadn’t eaten dinner yet, but she had a meal plan for this week that she would have to adjust. in the end, her friendship inevitably won, and she nodded. “that sounds great actually - i haven’t yet, you know me...”

Rude as it was, Eloise hungrily grabbed at the water bottle, gulping down half of it before surfacing for breath, wiping her mouth clean with her sleeve. Finally she took another breath, and regained her position to a full stand. “Thank you.” The waitress said gratefully, offering the stranger back her bottle. “I’m sorry if I bothered you. I just—- I had to get away. Those food trucks really smell…”
Tumblr media
lana looked her right in the eye, a hand still on each of her shoulders. “you didn’t bother me at all, there really is no need to worry.” lana put the water bottle back in her bag, then looked sympathetically at the other woman. she didn’t want to assume anything, but she guessed they were as unpleasant for her as they were for lana - in that case, very, if her state was anything to go by. “i understand that.” she gave slight shudder and crossed her arms. “they really do stink, it can be quite overwhelming.”

autumn hadn’t even made the connection – the connection that smoking probably wasn’t how to set an example for the children of the school you teach, but christ crackers, she couldn’t care less. “ as long as you don’t tell that bitch carol that i ducked out, your secret’s safe, ” she replied, lifting an eyebrow. she was pretty sure carol’s kids went to the high school, but she tuned that bitch out so often… guess what, carol ?? climate change is real !! it’s been scientifically proven !! “ no, i was just gonna ask what that’s like. i can’t imagine… ” she only had three kids to take care of and she was always one second away from snapping.
Tumblr media
lana breathed a sigh of relief, taking another drag on her cigarette. “whoever carol is, i’ll be sure to keep it from her.” she turned to the woman on her next question, raising an eyebrow. “honestly? i shouldn’t say this, but it’s a handful. i don’t think my nerves will ever recover even if i were to retire next year.” she let out a sigh, the tension in her shoulders reminding her jut how stressed she was - i mean christ, boot hill high wasn’t exactly full of attentive high achievers.

kittybriar‌:
A look of pure delight spread across Kitty’s face as the woman reached into her pocket to retrieve the pack and handed her both a cigarette and the lighter. Kitty wouldn’t pester the woman for the entirety of the rodeo; she would only stay just long enough for her to finish the cigarette. Sliding the cigarette in between her lips, Kitty covered the end with her hand as she lit it before taking a drag. Her mother would tell her that she was far too young to smoke so much, but Kitty was too young for just about everything that was fun or relaxing. She was too young to smoke so much, too young to drink so much, too young to fuck so much. At what age would she be able to do those things without her youth holding her back? Originally, she thought that eighteen was the ticket to freedom, then twenty one, and now twenty two. Perhaps one can never truly be old enough for freedom in Boot Hill.
As usual, Kitty focused in on the Principal’s beauty as a way to connect with her. The woman was the spitting image of what her mother wanted to look like but she couldn’t quite grasp it. Sure, Caroline Edwards looked like a Stepford Wife, but her aesthetic was one that was entirely bought by her husband. Principal Richards was smart, attractive, and fairly successful; Caroline could hardly keep up. “Where else am I going to get it from, Ms. Richards?” Kitty teased, taking the lit cigarette away from her lips so that she could speak clearly. Who would she get it from? The boys? The bad influences? Kitty was the bad influence. “Never mind. How’re the kids looking this year? Anyone remind you of me?” It was no secret that when her chunky heeled Mary Jane’s stepped foot off Boot Hill High’s campus for the last time there was a collective sigh of relief from both students and staff. Kitty was certainly one of a kind, but her version of defiance was the type that transcended generations. Surely there was another Kitty Briar at the high school who was giving the Principal a hard time.
Tumblr media
lana waited a moment before holding out her hand expectantly for her lighter. she didn’t want to be rude, but in all honesty giving it to an ex-student who was still really too young to be smoking was not at the top of her list of priorities.
she couldn’t help notice kitty’s eyes raking her up and down, taking notice of her outfit, and lana felt a little self-conscious. silly really - this girl’s opinion of her meant nothing in the grand scheme of things, but she always hated feeling under assessment. she looked back at her when she spoke again, raising an eyebrow incredulously. nevertheless there was a slight smile on her face. “really kitty? i wouldn’t put it past you to get it from anywhere.” it was a joke, but it came out harsher than she intended and lana felt herself blushing, looking down at her feet. she chuckled slightly at the girl’s next questions.
“they’re looking good - some of them have really bright futures ahead of them. there are certainly a few that share some of your traits, but i think you know very well than no one will ever quite... match you." that was an understatement, certainly. kitty had been towards the end of her years when lana had been promoted to principal, and she had spent much of her time hunting the girl out in secluded corners, often with boys or cigarettes (most of the time, both). her final year had resulted in a constant headache for lana, and though the current year group was giving her quite enough grief to be getting on with, she was lucky they didn’t have anyone that embodied all of kitty’s defiant ‘qualities’.

“None of them have said it directly to my face, but my patients tell me that their family members say things like that to them, there’s already so much shame around going to therapy and those people only make it worse.” Juliet’s eyes widened in shock “Seriously? That’s horrible. Have you ever had any parents actually manage to pull their kids out over something so trivial?” She smiled softly when Lana placed a hand on her shoulder, she knew that her friend was right, but she had a tendency to want to avoid problems until they went away. “Okay,” she said with a sigh “I’ll talk to her. I don’t know why I’m so nervous about stuff like this, it’s so silly.” Juliet chuckled softly “Some of those men will be too drunk to even remember anything the next morning, let alone what happened in a few years time. But if you don’t want to, we could just go and get a drink or two and see what happens.”
Tumblr media
“i know, but they’ve never managed it, thankfully. i just feel bad for the poor children.” lana chuckled, but it was slightly humourless. after all, after so many years it was difficult to see the funny side in those things. but then she smiled a real smile. “good - and you better do it.” lana bit her lip nervously - in all honesty, she could imagine nothing she would like less than trying to flirt with men aimlessly, as she had always felt it was something she was useless at. and a knot of anxiety settled in her stomach at the promise of lots of alcohol, and bars - she couldn’t help the connotations with her father’s drinking. “oh, i’m not sure. i’d honestly rather just stay in and have a bottle of wine, we really do need to catch up properly.” lana felt a little guilty, always the killjoy, so she added. “maybe we can do that another time, but not at the moment.”

It took Eloise several seconds to compose herself, to calm her breathing and force a smile. “I’m just—– out of—- breath.” She huffed, leaning forward, hand nursing the invisible stitch stabbing at her side. Dazed, Elle closed her eyes for a moment, attempting to catch her breath, to work past the nausea, yet when she opened them again, the woman before her had multiplied into two. “I’m just a bit—– a bit dizzy. I’m not really– a—- runner.” She went on, almost laughing at her predicament. “I’ll be alright in a minute I just need— some water or something.”
Tumblr media
lana frowned at the girl. she didn’t want to push her, but could tell she was really shaken. she quirked an eyebrow. “are you sure?” she noticed the lack of focus when their eyes met - she must be dizzy, and lana doubled her efforts at holding her up. then lana fished in her bag, bringing out a bottle of water and extending it to the other woman. “here, take this. sip it slowly.”

“Yeah, to the couple of hundred of residents, half of whom think I’m a ‘quack’ and conning people out their money. Their words not mine. But there could be some people that are interested.” Juliet said with a chuckle. When she’d first moved to Boot Hill,  she’d been stunned when people had been outright aggressive towards her, telling her that what she did was a scam. But now the words rolled off her, surprising how moving to a small town had made her develop a thicker skin.“It is, I feel so guilty, like maybe I’ve shouldn’t have taken on so many clients, or that I should open up my own office so that I don’t spend my free time doing consults at the hospital..” she trailed off with a sigh “I don’t how to explain any of this to her though, like what if she blames me? She could hate it here and I wouldn’t even know.” Juliet chewed on her lower lip for a moment “Even though I feel like my love life is in ruins, doesn’t mean yours has to be. We could go out and I could be your wingwoman. You wouldn’t have to start dating anyone, just talk to a few people see if you like any of them.”
Tumblr media
lana frowned. “i’m sure they don’t really think that.” she wasn’t sure what to say - it was hard. many people here had no respect for education or psychology. “i get it though - parents tell me the subjects we teach are useless, and try to pull their kids from the school. they’re a bit backward, in a way.” she placed a sympathetic hand on juliet’s shoulder, smiling at her slightly. “i’m sure she understands - but you do need to talk to her, let her know how you’re feeling. it will make you feel better.” then she laughed, awkwardly, and felt a blush rise in her cheeks. “i’m not sure how i feel about that. god, most of the men my age around here are parents, who’s children i’ll be teaching at some point! can you imagine?”

the snake still resting contently in his hands, alison jumps back slightly once he realizes the blonde next to him isn’t finola. “oh!” he exclaims softly, fingers flexing over yellow-and-white snake. the owner tuts disapprovingly behind him and sonny carefully hands the snake back, muttering something that’s supposed to be an apology but sounds more like an embarrassed grunt. he turns back to mrs. richards, head somewhat bowing sheepishly. “sorry, mrs. richards. i thought you were my sister.”
lana could have laughed at the man’s embarrassment, if she wasn’t too busy trying to slow her heart rate back to something acceptable. she waved a hand of dismissal, the other still clutching her chest. once she had calmed down, she turned back to him. “it’s alright. although i do hope your sister is slightly more fond of snakes than i am.” she registered his use of ‘mrs’, and fought the urge to chuckle or bristle, settling for something in the middle.
“you’re not a student anymore alison, you can probably call me lana - and it’s still ‘miss’“
