Having an f/o who is dead in their canon is not just:

“Awwh, I can’t see them in my favourite game/series anymore”

- Its mourning when you find out they die in their source material

- Dreading when the next movie/season of their series comes out because you know they will die because you read the books/ played the games

- Feeling empty when you look them up to find out they die in their source you haven’t seen/read/played yet

- Being left out when other selfshippers can consume new canon content of them but you never can

- Depression and grief over losing them because they are like a real person to you

- Listening to songs or reading tropes that you know fit them and you perfectly only if they were alive

- Getting jealous when others ship themselves with your f/o because of grief

- Crying when you read fanfiction or look at fanart

Its mourning the loss of someone you love

I think I’ve gotten so used to filtering self-advice through fictional characters that I’ve just started doing it automatically, so it catches me off guard whenever I subconsciously pick whoever I’m vibing with in the moment, and it’s one so far off the usual list

For me, F/Os are a lot of things. Sometimes they’re romantic, sometimes familial, sometimes platonic. Here I’ll mostly gush about my husbands, but I might mention fictional family/friends too!

I deal with a lot of stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem, and I’ve found that self shipping as a coping mechanism is a lifesaver for when I’m too emotional to think logically by myself

What I do is; when I’m all up in my feels and spiraling, or struggling with self care- I since I can never take my own advice, I had my logical brain to a fictional character, and have them tell me the same thing. Apparently, I’m 99% more likely to listen to the advice of a fictional character than I am to my own.
