game changer episode tier list (elaboration under cut)
disclaimers:
list maker did not include the last bit of s6 or any of s7
not in order within tiers
all rankings are relative to each other, the D-tier episodes are still quite good in a vacuum
S tier
Yes or No: genuinely so iconic. If you've watched it, you know. Generally I tend to not love episodes that go too far into humor or game design at the expense of the other. This is an exception. The beyond-peak levels of humor and mindfuck make up for the lack of game design.
Secret Samta 3: same game design as the other two secret samtas, not too much mindfuck beyond that of any social deduction game. What elevates this above the others is the sheer comedy gold of some of the "presents." There's actually a portion of this one I have to fastforward past, but I don't count that too harshly since that's really a me thing.
Escape the Greenroom: this may be the best episode. I'm not 100% sure on that, but damn does it not fail in a single category. Even beyond the humor-game-mindfuck trifecta, it has actual narrative. Not even much to say here, it's just a really good episode. The only reason I'm not sure it's the best is that it's not a very good representation of what the show usually is. It doesn't have nearly the same vibe as any of the other top episodes.
Battle Royale: learned from the mistakes of the first survivor. Genuinely a really good viewing experience. Some classic bits, but tends significantly more dramatic and less comedic than average, and it works. Improving on the first survivor special, it has more varied challenges, less immunity, more time for eliminations to breathe...
Second Place: apart from one bit of objectively bad game design that really irks me, the game element is handled well. The cast is exactly perfect to maximize the humor of this kind of episode. It's just a really solid all-around episode that represents what Game Changer is. This or the actual first episode (Lie Detector) is a good way to get introduced to the show if you haven't watched it before.
Bingo: it's really hard to quantify what I love so much about this one. It's a lot like Second Place, but kinda relies on knowing some of the cast's mannerisms, so not great as an intro point.
Deja Vu: listen man it has the wenis, not all of these can be an essay
A tier
Lie Detector: most likely the best intro to the show. Even if you haven't watched anything else from Dropout, there's enough here to familiarize yourself with.
Whodunnit: I put this here because I hadn't really established a scaling yet, it really should be like B or even C. It's pretty funny ig
Tell Us About Yourself: entirely for the Scorekeeper and the reveal. It's a simple concept, but fantastic execution.
Sell Outs: essentially identical to A Sponsored Episode, but wins out by having some better bits. Plus, this is where the "recurring gags" from the first one actually recur recur.
The Substitute: celebrity guest is extremely funny and elevates it above the previous noise boys episodes. Also I feel like being virtual actually somewhat helped this format.
Three for the Price of One: see Sell Outs
Secret Samta 2: wins over the original secret samta because of lily having played before, and that leading to more BITS
Race to the Bottom: wins over Do I Hear $1 for the scab
Sam Says: it's a good episode man I have a lot less to say when they're this just standard good
Name a Number: very interesting game design, lots of funny, should get a sequel
Newlyweb Game: fnnuy
Sam Says 3: wins over sam says 2 for pure shenanigans. Could have gone in S-tier. You can cum now
B tier
Make Some Noise: I feel like this lack of actual game elements fits better when it's its own show, not pretending to be a game show. I'm also not even the biggest fan of the MSN show, though I do watch it occasionally. I prefer more competition and strategy being shown.
Game of Prizes: pretty middle-of-the-road, I feel like the value of some of the prizes sort of put a damper on the funny.
Round 4: see MSN
Do I Hear $1: some good, but too much of it is bazinga "cringe comedy" which I'm not a big fan of. I do like the final twist though
Is This Thing On: bonus points for capitalizing on the restrictions of the virtual format. Nothing else really stands out, good or bad.
Never Have I Ever: much like Make Some Noise, this works best as its own show, separate from the Game Changer format. One of the highest B-tiers though for the funny of some of these stories.
Jeopardy: weird… one of the lower B-tiers. A couple bits, but not much funny. Not much game either. It's like weird D&D with no dice. Worth a watch of course, but just such a total departure from the show's normal format that it really suffers
A Sponsored Episode: some of the very, very funny bits that recur throughout the whole show originate here. I wouldn't mind it spinning off into its own show. Partially dragged down by its own sequels being better
Secret Samta: strong game concept, somewhat lackluster execution. Concept is revitalized by sequels, and it was even used as a minigame in Battle Royale.
Like My Coffee: basically make some noise but sex. Slightly more competition and strategy being shown with the category choices, but not a huge amount. Guest star leads to very funny interactions
Noise Boys: see MSN
The Official Cast Recording: I have the album saved on spotify. It's damn funny, but… doesn't feel like Game Changer.
Survivor: good but flawed -- minigames all the same, eliminations are frequent and don't have time to breathe, immunity is too prevalent. sequel fixes
Sam Says 2: loses to the first one by just feeling a bit dry and repetitive
Karaoke Night: crazy improvisation skills to the point that a screen-recording of one of the improvised songs is in my normal spotify playlist. See TOCR though…
A Game Most Changed: see TOCR, though the prompts are a bit more disruptive and thus funnier
Bachelor: weird. Good, but weird. Not much else to say.
Pencils Down: the most fun of the episodes that I keep forgetting exist. It's weird how forgettable this one is when it shares part of both general concept and cast with Drawfee, which I enjoy
C tier
Sleeper Agents: some genuinely funny moments, a LOT of cringe comedy though.
Ham It Up: basically MSN but less room for creativity because of the script. Some funny but not as much as MSN
Next Slide Please: ehhhhhhh. Improvised presentations, good concept, but something about it is just really forgettable. I keep forgetting it's not just the same thing as Smartypants
Tome of Terror: MSN but each response is very long. funny but drags on
Don't Cry: I'm sure this is more enjoyable if you're more parasocial than me
Like My Coffee 2: cringe. so much cringe.
As A Cucumber: the fact that laughing elevates your heartrate means this game format actively interferes with the cast being funny
D tier
Nom Nom Nom: for something that's such a fever dream it's so forgettable. I wish it were more of a thing where they were able to argue their positions, instead of there being just one set answer.
Everything Factory: the game is kinda dumb, the only thing that makes it not insanely easy is a time limit, and the time limit makes it so this is the only episode with no funny bits that I remember.
Changer Con: idk maybe this would be more enjoyable if I were more immersed in the cosplay scene, it's kinda just nothing though. insert ned flanders "nothin at all" soundbite
20/20 Vision: a fun idea for a quiz but the execution feels off and like a lot of these bottom-tier ones I keep forgetting it exists. maybe it was better in 2020…
Make It Fashion: see Changer Con
Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience: the game design in this one annoys me because it pretends to exist but actually doesn't. The game is figuring out what to do but there's no pattern to what the correct actions are, so there's nothing to figure out. Everything Factory is probably the worst episode, but this is the one I personally dislike the most.

TIL “Yankee Doodle” was written by the British to mock americans. “Doodle” is thought to come from the German “dödel”, meaning “fool” or “simpleton” and “macaroni,” a flamboyantly stylish type of dress, painting the Yankees as morons who thought placing a feather in one’s cap made them a “dandy.”

We should celebrate the 10th anniversary of the legalization of marriage equality, but we also must remember in this moment when the rights of LGBTQ people in this country are under constant assault that it can all disappear in a moment.
This is the country we will go back to if the conservatives on the Supreme Court have openly said they want. We much fight to prevent any backslide, and fight to restore the rights that have already been stripped from us, especially trans right which have been attacked particularly cruely.
Our community fights as one or we all fall.
